NARRATIVE
On 01/04/23 at 0728 hours Officer Lane was operating City of Renton vehicle #223 and was arriving
at a four car collision in the 2200 block of Maple Valley Highway in Renton Washington, King County.
Officer Lane was Eastbound on Maple Valley Highway and had just passed the four car collision he
was responding to which was facing Westbound in the opposite lanes. Officer Lane was operating
his emergency lights upon arrival and needed to turn around to get behind and block traffic for the
collision for safety reasons.
As Officer Lane passed the collision and started into his U-Turn he believed all traffic behind him was
yielding and he would be able to turn. Officer Lane swung wide to the South to have enough room to
turn around and position himself behind the collision. As Officer Lane turned U1 drove directly into
the drivers side of Officer Lane's vehicle.
U1's airbag was deployed. U1 was identified by Washington State Drivers license. U1 was towed by
Bankers tow due to disabling damage to the front. U1 was checked by the Renton Fire Authority due
to complaint of neck pain. U1 was not transported and did not appear injured. U1 was extremely
upset and told me she yielded to the police vehicle but then he turned in front and she drove into him.
Officer Lane complained of head pain but appeared uninjured.
I provided an exchange of information to U1 and explained the city was self insured.
Police vehicle #223 was able to be driven to the city shops and dropped off for repair.
I watched Officer Lane's in car video which confirmed the account of the collision. Photos of both
vehicles were taken and uploaded to the case file.
Officer Lane was operating his emergency lights and needed to perform a U-Turn and block traffic as
part of his duties. U1 was aware that Officer Lane's lights were on because she stated she yielded to
him. U1 however did not grant the right of way to an emergency vehicle as she assumed he was just
going to keep driving straight not expecting him to go in any other direction. U1 should have yielded
to a stop until she knew the roadway was clear to proceed forward. Because U 1 drove into U2 when
U1 should have been yielding the right of way, U1 is the proximate cause of this collision.
No citations were issued for this collision.
