THE FOLLOWING WAS NOTED:
Associated Earth Sciences Inc. (AESI) was contacted earlier this week by Jason with Sare Electric to schedule us for 2-1/2 feet of
conduit trench backfill today. He also said that they had 4 precast light pole standards that would be set 5 feet deep in an open
excavation. This morning, we contacted Jason and he said that backfill would begin after an electrical inspection scheduled between
1 and 2pm. He said if the inspection was later than anticipated, then they would backfill tomorrow. They also have electrical trench
work and light standard to install north of the school building tomorrow.
Electrical Conduit Trench and Light Pole Backfill:
We arrived onsite at 11am to check the progress of the electrical trenches, light pole excavations and the relative moisture condition
of the excavated trench and light pole spoils. While onsite, we observed that they had dug a majority of the conduit trenches and set
3 of the precast standards. We obtained electrical plans from Cornerstone and Sare Electric. The As-Built electrical trenches are
dashed on the plans (Figure 1), as estimated by our observations. Close observations of the As-Built locations revealed that most of
the conduit trenches and all the light pole areas were in a landscape area surrounding 3 completed seat walls. Approximately 40 feet
of the conduit trench will be located under hardscape.
The trenches were completed into native, tan, silty, fine to coarse sand with some gravel (Lodgement till). Based on our observations,
the excavated material appeared to be at a suitable moisture content to compact to a non-yielding condition. The contractor said
that they would probably start compacting in the next 1-2 hours and that if they didn’t get to compacting, then the stockpiles would
be covered with plastic sheeting to protect from any inclement weather. The contractor was using a jumping jack around the light
pole standards and said that they had a hoepac available too. We observed a small vibratory plate (sled) compactor onsite also. We
recommended that the lifts not exceed 12 inches and that if the sled compactor is used that the loose lifts not exceed 6 inches thick.
We informed Sare Electric and Cornerstone that we will return tomorrow to test compaction on the trenches backfilled today and
what will be placed tomorrow.
