GENERAL CONSTRUCTION NOTES:
1. THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF ALL WORK ON THIS PROJECT SHALL CONFORM TO THE LATEST
REVISION AND/OR VERSION OF ALL CODES AND REFERENCE STANDARDS.
2. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL CHECK AND VERIFY ALL CONDITIONS AND MEASUREMENTS AT THE SITE
AND REPORT TO THE ENGINEER ANY DISCREPANCIES OR UNSATISFACTORY CONDITIONS WHICH MAY
ADVERSELY AFFECT THE PROPER COMPLETION OF THE JOB BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE WORK.
3. DO NOT SCALE DRAWINGS.
4. ALL DIMENSIONS ON THE DRAWINGS ARE IN FEET AND INCHES UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE.
5. MAINTAIN A SET OF DRAWINGS ON SITE AND UPDATE FREQUENTLY WITH CONSTRUCTION RECORD
INFORMATION.
6. THE LANDOWNER/OPERATOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR OBTAINING AND COMPLYING WITH ALL PERMITS
AND EASEMENTS. THIS INCLUDES ALL FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL PERMITS. THE
LANDOWNER/OPERATOR IS TO ENSURE THAT THE CONTRACTOR HAS ACQUIRED ALL PERMITS.
7. THE LANDOWNER/OPERATOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR CHECKING AND COMPLYING WITH ALL LOCAL
ORDINANCES THAT MAY AFFECT THE PROJECT.
8. ALL CONSTRUCTION SHALL BE CARRIED OUT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS.
ALL COMPONENTS OF THE COMPLETED SYSTEM SHALL CONFORM TO THE LINES, GRADES,
ELEVATIONS, DIMENSIONS AND MATERIALS SHOWN ON THE PLANS.
9. ANY CHANGES IN THE PLANS OR SPECIFICATIONS MUST BE APPROVED BY GHD PRIOR TO BEING
MADE. CHANGES ARE TO BE REVIEWED BY THE LANDOWNER/OPERATOR FOR CONCURRENCE.
SUBSTITUTIONS FROM SPECIFIED PRODUCTS AND MATERIALS SHALL BE APPROVED BY THE ENGINEER
PRIOR TO ORDERING OF MATERIALS.
10. APPROVED SHALL MEAN APPROVED IN WRITING BY THE ENGINEER OF RECORD.
11. GHD MAKES NO REPRESENTATION AS TO THE EXISTENCE OR NONEXISTENCE OF ANY UTILITIES AT
THE CONSTRUCTION SITE. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE LANDOWNER/OPERATORS AND
CONTRACTORS TO ASSURE THEMSELVES THAT NO HAZARD EXISTS OR THAT NO DAMAGE WILL
OCCUR TO UTILITIES. DIGGERS HOTLINE SHOULD BE NOTIFIED AT 811 (JULIEBEFOREYOUDIG.COM) AT
LEAST 3 FULL BUSINESS DAYS PRIOR TO EXCAVATION.
12. ALL DISTURBED AREAS SHALL BE RESTORED TO PRECONSTRUCTION CONDITIONS SUCH AS
CONCRETE FINISH TOPSOILED, FERTILIZED, SEEDED, AND MULCHED OR OTHERWISE STABILIZED AS
REQUIRED ON THE CONSTRUCTION PLANS.
13. CLEAR AND GRUB ALL AREAS NECESSARY FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF ALL STRUCTURES.
14. DELIVER, HANDLE, AND STORE ALL MATERIALS IN A MANNER AS TO AVOID ANY DAMAGE.
HEALTH AND SAFETY NOTES
1. THE CONTRACTOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR KNOWING AND FOLLOWING ALL APPROPRIATE SAFETY
STANDARDS.
2. HARD HATS MUST BE WORN BY ANYONE ON THE SITE WHO MAY BE EXPOSED TO FALLING OBJECTS
OR ANYONE WITHIN OPERATING RANGE OF OVERHEAD CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT. OVERHEAD
CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT INCLUDES, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO, BACKHOES, CRANES, DRAGLINES AND
FRONT-END LOADERS. EQUIPMENT OPERATORS WITHIN ENCLOSED VEHICLES ARE ALSO REQUIRED
TO WEAR HARD HATS.
FOUNDATION, EXCAVATION AND BACKFILL NOTES
1. BACKFILL MATERIAL AROUND WALLS SHALL BE NATIVE MATERIAL FREE FROM ORGANIC AND
DELETERIOUS MATERIAL. SOFT CLAY MATERIAL SHALL NOT BE USED AS BACKFILL MATERIAL UNLESS
APPROVED BY THE GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER.
2. BACKFILL TO BE PLACED AND COMPACTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH IOWA STATEWIDE URBAN DESIGN
AND SPECIFICATIONS DIVISION 2 - EARTHWORK.
3. THE LINE OF SLOPE BETWEEN ADJACENT EXCAVATIONS FOR FOOTINGS SHALL NOT EXCEED THE
LIMITS DETERMINED BY THE GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER. DESIGN AND CONSTRUCT ADEQUATE
SHORING AS REQUIRED. SHORING IS TO BE DESIGNED BY A PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER.
4. MINIMUM ALLOWABLE SOIL BEARING CAPACITY OF 1,500 PSF, MINIMUM SOIL SUBGRADE MODULUS OF
K=100 PCI.
CAST -IN -PLACE CONCRETE NOTES
1. ALL MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LATEST
APPLICABLE ACI SPECIFICATIONS/GUIDELINES. THESE INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, ACI 301,
304R, 305, 306, 308, 315.
2. CONCRETE DESIGN IN ACCORDANCE WITH ACI 318-14. MINIMUM CONCRETE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH
SHALL BE 4,500 PSI AT 28 DAYS. CONTRACTOR MUST PROVIDE MIX DESIGN TO OWNER FOR
APPROVAL.
3. CONCRETE FORMS SHALL HAVE SUFFICIENT STRENGTH AND RIGIDITY TO HOLD THE CONCRETE AND
WITHSTAND THE NECESSARY PRESSURE, TAMPING, AND VIBRATION WITHOUT DEFLECTION FROM THE
PRESCRIBED LINES. THEY SHALL BE MORTAR -TIGHT AND CONSTRUCTED SO THAT THEY CAN BE
REMOVED WITHOUT HAMMERING OR PRYING AGAINST THE CONCRETE. THE INSIDE OF THE FORMS
SHALL BE OILED WITH A NON -STAINING MINERAL OIL OR THOROUGHLY WETTED BEFORE CONCRETE IS
PLACED.
4. METAL TIES OR ANCHORAGES SHALL BE FULL DIMENSION. NOMINAL SIZE WALL TIES ARE NOT
PERMITTED. WALL TIE ENDS MUST BE BROKEN OFF MINIMUM 1/2" INSIDE THE WALL AND PATCHED
WITH AN APPROVED PATCHING MATERIAL. TIE PATCHING IS REQUIRED ON BOTH THE INSIDE AND
OUTSIDE OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES.
5. ALL CONCRETE FOR WALLS SHALL BE CONSOLIDATED WITH INTERNAL TYPE MECHANICAL VIBRATORS.
CONCRETE SHALL BE PLACED CONTINUOUSLY IN HORIZONTAL LIFTS NOT GREATER THAN 20 INCHES
AND AS TO NOT CREATE COLD JOINTS. CONCRETE BEING PLACED SHALL NOT BE DROPPED FROM A
HEIGHT GREATER THAN 6 FEET.
6. DO NOT PLACE BACKFILL LOADS ON WALLS UNTIL THE CONCRETE HAS ACHIEVED 100% OF THE 28-DAY
DESIGN STRENGTH.
7. NO CUTTING OR DRILLING IN HARDENED CONCRETE IS PERMITTED WITHOUT APPROVAL FROM THE
ENGINEER.
8. PIPES, HOLES, AND PENETRATIONS TO BE INSTALLED BETWEEN REINFORCING. DO NOT CUT REBAR
FOR PIPES, HOLES, AND OTHER PENETRATIONS, UNLESS DONE IN ACCORDANCE WITH DRAWINGS.
9. PROVIDE 1" CHAMFER ON ALL EXPOSED CONCRETE EDGES.
10. THE STEEL REINFORCED CONCRETE PADS LOAD BEARING CAPACITIES WERE DESIGNED WITH A
PRESUMPTIVE LOAD BEARING ASSUMPTION OF SOIL BEARING CAPACITY OF 1,500 LBS/SF PER
SECTION 1806.2 AND PRESUMPTIVE LOAD BEARING VALUES TABLE 1806.2
11. REINFORCING STEEL SHALL BE NEW DEFORMED BARS CONFORMING TO ASTM A615, GRADE 60
SPECIFICATIONS. ALL REINFORCING MATERIAL SHALL BE FREE OF DIRT, LOOSE RUST, SCALE OIL,
PAINT OR OTHER COATINGS. WELDING OF REINFORCEMENT STEEL IS NOT PERMITTED.
12. REINFORCING STEEL AND WATERSTOP SHALL BE ACCURATELY PLACED IN POSITION AS SHOWN ON
THE PLANS AND FIRMLY ANCHORED TO PREVENT DISPLACEMENT DURING PLACEMENT OF CONCRETE.
INSERTION OF STEEL INTO FRESH CONCRETE IS NOT PERMITTED.
13. BAR SPLICE AND DEVELOPMENT LENGTHS ARE TO BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH ACI 318-11 CL. 12.2.3, AS
LISTED BELOW. UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE ON DRAWINGS.

15. THE MIN. CLEAR DISTANCE BETWEEN REINFORCING STEEL AND SURFACE OF CONCRETE MUST BE AS

WALLS: 2" TO EXT. & INT. FACE
FOOTINGS & SLABS: 3" TO BOTTOM FACE CAST AGAINST EARTH, 2" TO TOP FACE AND SIDES
16. REINFORCING IS TO BE GENERALLY DETAILED IN ACCORDANCE WITH CRSI MANUAL OF STANDARD
PRACTICE (LATEST EDITION).
17. IF THE DEPTH OF A FOOTING/FOUNDATION IS SUCH THAT A HOOK DEVELOPMENT LENGTH CANNOT BE
ACHIEVED FOR THE VERTICAL WALL DOWELS, THE HORIZONTAL LEG LENGTH OF THE DOWEL SHALL
BE EQUIVALENT TO THE DEVELOPMENT LENGTH OF THE BAR.
18. BARS LABELED "MID" TO BE LOCATED AT MID -DEPTH OF THE SECTION.
19. ALL REINFORCING AND WATERSTOP TO BE INSPECTED BY THE ENGINEER BEFORE POURING
CONCRETE.
20. CONSTRUCTION JOINTS SHALL BE MADE AND LOCATED SO AS NOT TO IMPAIR THE STRENGTH OF THE
STRUCTURE. IF CONSTRUCTION JOINTS ARE NOT SPECIFICALLY LOCATED ON THE DRAWINGS AND
THERE IS ANY DOUBT CONCERNING THE LOCATION, THE CONTRACTOR MUST CONSULT WITH THE
ENGINEER.
21. WHERE A CONSTRUCTION JOINT IS TO BE MADE, THE SURFACE OF THE SET CONCRETE SHALL BE
THOROUGHLY CLEANED AND BE IN DAMP CONDITION WITH NO FREE WATER ON THE SURFACE,
IMMEDIATELY BEFORE PLACING ADJACENT CONCRETE. REINFORCING STEEL PROJECTED THROUGH A
CONSTRUCTION JOINT SHALL BE THOROUGHLY CLEANED OF FLAKY RUST, MUD, OIL, DRIED CONCRETE
OR ANY OTHER COATINGS THAT WOULD COMPROMISE THE BOND.
22. CONSTRUCTION JOINTS AS SHOWN ON DRAWING.
23. WATERSTOP SHALL BE MADE OF PVC OR HYDROPHILIC COMPOUND. THE WATERSTOP SHALL BE THE
TYPE AND SIZE SPECIFIED ON THE CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS. ALL PVC WATERSTOP INTERSECTIONS
SHALL BE FACTORY WELDED. WATERSTOP SHALL BE THOSE LISTED BELOW OR ENGINEER APPROVED
EQUIVALENT. 6-INCH WATERSTOP SHALL BE GREENSTREAK NO. 709 OR ENGINEER APPROVED
EQUIVALENT
24. ALL SPECIFIED SEALANTS SHALL BE THOSE LISTED BELOW, AND/OR ENGINEER APPROVED
EQUIVALENT. SIKAFLEX 1A - ONE COMPONENT, POLYURETHANE BASED ELASTOMERIC SEALANT
25. CURING COMPOUND SHALL BE A LIQUID MEMBRANE -FORMING COMPOUND SUITABLE FOR SPRAYING
ON THE CONCRETE SURFACE. THE CURING COMPOUND SHALL MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF ASTM
C309 TYPE 2 (WHITE PIGMENTED).
26. ISOLATION JOINT MATERIAL SHALL BE MIN. 1/2" THICK ASPHALT IMPREGNATED FIBERBOARD, TO ASTM
D1751.
27. EPDXY ANCHORING COMPOUND SHALL BE ULTRABOND1 TWO COMPONENT EPDXY ANCHORING GEL,
TESTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH ASTM E488-10 & ASTM E1512-01, OR ENGINEER APPROVED
EQUIVALENT.
28. FIELD TEST SHALL BE CONDUCTED ON THE CONCRETE DURING PLACEMENT AND SHALL CONFORM TO
A CONCRETE STRENGTH OF 4,500 PSI, AIR ENTRAINMENT OF 6% + OR -, AND A SLUMP OF 5 INCHES.
APPROXIMATELY 6 CONCRETE CYLINDERS SHALL BE CAST EVERY 150 CUBIC YARDS AND STRENGTH
TESTED AT 7 DAYS AND 28 DAYS.
SOIL NOTES
1. SUBGRADE SOILS SHALL BE COMPACTED TO STANDARD PROCTOR 95% MAXIMUM DRY DENSITY PER
ASTM D698.
2. SUBBASE SHALL BE 12" GRAVEL TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF SECTION 9-03.12(1)(B) -CLASS B
DIVISION 9 MATERIALS - 2023 STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS WSDoT.
