Limitations: The presence of our field representative at the site is to provide our client with a source of professional advice, opinions, and recommendations based upon the field representative’s observations and testing of the contractor’s work. Our services do not include supervision or direction of the contractor, their employees, or agents. Geotechnical recommendations for
obtaining project objectives may be made by our representatives; however, direction of the actual work should come from the owner or contractor, as appropriate. The contractor is responsible
for complying with the contract documents at all times, regardless of the presence of our field representative. Jobsite safety, including compliance with all applicable state or federal regulations,
is the sole responsibility of the contractor. The observations, recommendations, and conclusions provided in this field report are preliminary until reviewed by the ESNW project manager.
ESNW rep was onsite to observe vault excavation and roadway subgrade.
Vault Excavation
ESNW rep observed the contractor excavating the Northwest corner of the site, for proposed stormwater
vault. Rep observed the contractor excavating into native brown inter bedded sand with gravel, and silt
as-depth. ESNW rep observed the eastern and southern edges of the excavation to have an exposed
height of approximately 20 feet cut to a temporary 1H:1V slope inclination. The west side of the
excavation was observed to have exposed overall heights ranging between approximately 7 to 10 feet
(or less). The north portion of the excavation was observed to have exposed overall heights ranging
between approximately 10 feet at the west and 20 feet to the east (see photo attached).
Tension cracking was identified above the East/SE portion of the excavation. The tension cracks were
reported to GBI PM. ESNW rep observed the contractor removing the excess soil mass on the top of the
slope. ESNW will continue to monitor daily.
An Ultrablock wall was constructed along the northern cut. This wall is two blocks high and vertical sitting
on top of 12” to 18” of 4”-8” spalls. ESNW also recommended backfilling the voids behind the wall to
provide positive contact between the slope and retained cut.
ESNW rep will return daily to observe stability of the slopes. It is the responsibility of the contractor to
perform all necessary safety measures in accordance with state and federal regulations.
Curb Subgrade
While onsite, ESNW rep used a ½” steel T-probe to probe the subgrade of the curb along Road A,
comprising of 1 ¼” minus crushed rock. Rep observed the subgrade to be dense, firm, unyielding, and
suitable for concrete pour on Thursday, May 4th.
