Limitations: The presence of our field representative at the site is to provide our client with a source of professional advice, opinions, and recommendations based upon the field representative’s observations and testing of the contractor’s work. Our services do not include supervision or direction of the contractor, their employees, or agents. Geotechnical recommendations for
obtaining project objectives may be made by our representatives; however, direction of the actual work should come from the owner or contractor, as appropriate. The contractor is responsible
for complying with the contract documents at all times, regardless of the presence of our field representative. Jobsite safety, including compliance with all applicable state or federal regulations,
is the sole responsibility of the contractor. The observations, recommendations, and conclusions provided in this field report are preliminary until reviewed by the ESNW project manager.
ESNW rep was onsite to observe Redi-Rock wall foundation keyway.
Wall Keyway Observations
While onsite, ESNW rep observed the contractor cutting a wall keyway approximately 6 feet in width into
native grey sandy silt with gravel. ESNW rep used a ½” steel T-probe to probe the keyway and observed
it to be very dense, firm, unyielding, and suitable for the construction of the proposed wall. ESNW rep
observed the contractor placing Redi-Rock wall blocks along the keyway that has been capped with 5/8th
inch minus. Rep observed the contractor had placed a 4” corugated drainage pipe behind the wall and
backfilled it with pea gravel. Some groundwater at the base of the keyway was observed, as well as
layers of interbedded sand with gravel and cobbles in some areas of the exposed near vertical cut. Due
to the height of the cut, ESNW PM Ray recommends cutting the slope back closer to 1H:1V. ESNW rep
recommends segmental wall construction in coordination with keyway/temporary excavation. In this
respect the contractor can excavate the bulk of the soil to approximately 1H:1V to 0.75H:1V, but the
near-vertical keyway and over-steepened (0.5H:1V) transitions shall be completed in 20’-30’ linial
sections of exposed cut at a time. Once the lower six feet of wall is constructed the excavation can
progress laterally. Please see attached site plan illustrating wall construction area.
