NARRATIVE
On 02/23/23 at 1708 hours I arrived at a vehicle versus bicycle collision at SW Grady Way and
Oakesdale Ave SW in Renton Washington, King County.
Initial information was that the bicyclist was unconscious in the roadway.
Upon arrival the vehicle was stopped in the roadway facing NB where it stopped after the collision.
The bicycle had already been moved out of the roadway. The bicyclist was being treated by Renton
Fire Authority. The bicyclist was verbally identified and DOS photo confirmed his ID. I learned he had
never lost consciousness and medics cleared him to be treated by the Fire Dept due to non serious
injuries. The bicyclist is listed as U2 in this report however he was equally at fault for this collision.
U2 was transported to VMC for evaluation of injuries.
U1 was identified by Washington State Drivers license. Both parties agreed on the cause. U2 was
West to East in the crosswalk on a bicycle. Traffic going Westbound on SW Grady Way had a green
light and vehicles were turning Northbound on Oakesdale. U2 saw this and stopped and waived a
vehicle through in front of him. He then continued East in the crosswalk riding his bike at slow speed.
U1 then turned right and did not see U2 and continued to make the right turn at low speed. U2 saw
this and tried to veer away but U1 hit U2 with the front center area of the car knocking U2 over. little
to no damage to U1. UAR's bicycle seat was twisted and minor damage from hitting the ground.
Witness Berdar was sitting in her car on Oakesdale waiting on a red light. She stated it appeared
both parties could have avoided hitting each other but did not. She said it was low speed. She stated
U1 was turning but she could see the driver was not looking in front but to the left so the driver was
not paying attention as he made the turn. She also thought U2 saw U1 in enough time to not get hit
but kept slowly moving as if assuming U1 would stop.
After the collision I watched the crosswalk sign and saw that when U1 had a green light, the
crosswalk stated not to cross.
U2 should not have been in the roadway during the collision and is the proximate cause. I provided
both parties with information exchange. I saw U2 at VMC and they still had not defined an injury from
the collision.
