Team Canopy: Thank you for your continued patience, we share this site update from the Geotech: In accordance with our geotechnical recommendations, the North Vault construction and related foundation subgrade preparation has resumed. Earlier this spring, vault construction and related subgrade preparation activities were suspended due to groundwater initiated instability along the east side slope of the excavation. In response to the identified instability (and in accordance with the recommendation of the geotechnical engineer), a temporary soil berm was placed along the base of the excavation side slope. Following placement of the temporary berm, a decision was made to suspend the construction until summer when drier conditions were expected. In the interim period, survey was established around the excavation to confirm reestablishment of excavation stability. Given the dry weather condition that persisted through May and June (and that still persist), it was the opinion of the geotechnical engineer that the soil berm could be removed. Following removal of the soil berm (which began on July 5th), daily monitoring of the excavation revealed no indications of instability. The identified stability provided good confirmation that the diminished groundwater influence related to the persistent dry condition effectively improved the soil strength characteristics of the excavation side wall. On this basis, and given direct site observations made by the geotechnical engineer, it was determined that vault construction activities could resume contingent upon continued daily monitoring of the excavation. At this time, the excavation remains stable and formwork to accommodate the upcoming monolithic slab pour has nearly been completed. The geotechnical engineer (or his representative) will continue daily monitoring of the excavation to verify continued (good) performance of the excavation. Such monitoring will continue until final backfilling around the vault walls is completed. It should be noted that city owned right-of-way and adjacent privately owned properties were never at risk of impact related to the earlier identified instability. Inclinometers will be placed in all borings to monitor any sub-surface activities, or the lack thereof. We’re allowing the soils to dry out, and noticing a positive water table draw-down, all of which are aiding in the stabilization of the site. If the monitoring continues to be favorable, we’ll target the vault excavation in July. In the meantime we’ve got plenty of wet and dry utilities to finish up. Stabilized the site with asphalt in areas that make practical sense, collect and conveyance of water will always help. See first attached pic. 2. Placed (14) nails to monitor the site for any movement. There has been no movement since last week. 3. Ordered soil borings for continuous subterranean monitoring. The scope is for total of 4 soil borings to: 25’, 25’, 35’, and 45’. We will install 2.75” slope inclinometer casing in the 45’ boring, w/ 8” flush monument. That will occur this week.
