General Description
TIASTAR provides an efficient means of grouping
electric motor controls and related devices in one
compact structure., A motor control center con-
sists of one or more enclosed vertical sections
mounted on the floor. It contains incoming line
facilities, a common horizontal bus, wireway
trough, and conduit facilities for incoming and
outgoing wires. Each vertical section typically
contains a vertical bus connected to the power
bus, a .vertical wireway, one or more combination
motor control units, and various related devices,
including push buttons, selector switches, and
many others. Motor Control Centers also might
include equipment such as transformers, lighting
panels, and special assemblies.
TIASTAR, in addition to providing a safe conve-
nient housing for system motor controls, is easy
to design and install. Modular construction and
flexible features allow efficient space utilization
and simplify future additions or modifications.

Doors
The vertical wireway doors and unit doors are pan type with
concealed hinges of the removable pin type. The vertical
wireway door hinges on the right, the unit door on the left, giv-
ing maximum access to the vertical wireway. Individual doors
may be removed without removing the door above or below.
Doors stay in place even with the hinge pins removed and
the door fully opened. To remove, take out pins, close door,
and pull off. Doors open in excess of 110°. A minimum of two
(2)'/4 turn fasteners are used on 12" unit doors and larger.
15" and 20" wide MCC doors are available with a plexiglass
cutout option. See page B26 for dimensions.
Unit Supports
' Two shelf brackets and a separator angle support individual
units and provide a retention for a door gasket when so spec-
ified.
Cover Plates
The bottom 6" wireway of each section is covered with a
formed plate with captive -type screws. There are two 13
gauge top plates on 15" sections (three on 20"). The rear top
plate on front mounting and the center plate on back-to-back
mounting sections permit access to the horizontal bus. The
front top plate on front -mounting and the two outside plates
on back-to-back sections are removable for installation of con-
duit.
A screw -mounted 16 gauge plates cover the rear of front -
mounted MCCs for ease of removal if rear access is desired.
Reversible bottom end -cover plates cover the bottom hori-
zontal wireway, ground bus opening, and the end channels.
They perform this function if the section is mounted on its
sills or if the section with sills are grouted into the floor, the
plates are simply rotated 180°.
Finish
The motor control finish is an electrostatically applied TGIC
polyester powder, applied both manually and automatically in
an environmentally controlled clean room, cured at 400° F for
20 minutes. All painted parts undergo a five -stage prepara-
tion process that includes an alkaline wash, water rinse, iron
phosphate wash, water rinse and a non -chrome sealer. The
minimum film thickness on external surfaces is 2.0 Mils and
the finish passes a 600-hour salt spray test per ASTM B117-
94 definitions.
Motor control center structures are painted USAS #61 gray to
match Siemens distribution products. Units and the rear of
the vertical wireway are painted white.

FLA per NEC table 430-150 1996. (Use to size heater coil. Use motor nameplate data or table on page G12.)
' MCP size meets NEC requirements per article 430-110 115% FLA min. continuous amps.
MCP trip ranges are selected to meet maximum settings per NEC table 430-152 and exception C. Art. 430-52. MSCPs are fac-
tory set at minimum and can be set to a maximum of 1300% of motor FLA per NEC 430-52.
' Above ratings will not exceed maximum size allowed to protect heater coil for standard motor FLAs. Maximum ratings shown
on heater coil selection charts are not to be exceeded.
Do not use this chart for part winding starters. Use thermal magnetic breaker or fuse for short circuit protection.
' If high efficiency design E or B motors are used, contact factory for circuit breaker selection.

AWARNING
Fire, electric shock, or explosion hazard.
Can cause death, serious injury or
property damage.
To provide continued protection against risk of fire or
electric shock, examine and if damaged replace cur-
rent -carrying parts and other components of combi-
nation controller. Tripping (opening) of branch -circuit -
protective device may be an indication that fault cur-
rent has been interrupted. If overload relay current
elements burn out, replace complete overload relay.
To maintain overcurrent, short circuit and ground
fault protection, follow manufacturer's instructions
for selecting current elements and setting instanta-
neous trip circuit breaker.

Fuse sizes are selected in accordance with NEC 1996 article 430-52 & 57 and table 430-152
assuming motors with locked rotor KVA Code B thru E. Lower fuse rating may be required on
motors with Code A forTime Delay fuses and no code or Code A and auto transformer starters
application for Non -Time Delay fuses. See NEC table 430-152.
Max. current rating of fuses is:
a. 150% of max. heater FLA for Class R, K, or L
(time delay).
b. 250% of max. heater FLA for Class R, K or L
(non -time delay).
c. 300% of max. heater FLA for Class J (non -time delay).
150% for Buss J dimension Fuse (time delay).
If the calculated rating is between standard sizes, the next larger size may be used.
Fuse size may not exceed switch size.
Time -Delay -(Class K) or current limiting Time Delay (Class RK, J, Q.
Non-Delay-OneTme-(Class K), or Current Limiting RK, J, L.
Minimum switch size per NEC 430-110 must be 115% of FLA of motor.
Do not use this chart for part winding motors. Size as follows:
maximum fuse size limited to 150% FLA for dual element fuses and 200% for non delay type fuses.

Heaters shown in the table provide a maxi-
mum trip rating of 125% of the motor name-
plate amperes, which is suitable for 40°C
motors. For all other motors select heaters
one code number lower than specified in the
table, which give a maximum trip rating of
approximately 115%.
The tripping current of any heater in a 40'C
ambient is 25% greater than the lower value
of motor amperes shown in the table.
Starters do not provide protection from short
circuits. A protective device should be pro-
vided in accordance with the NEC (CEC in
Canada) and not exceed the values shown in
the table.
Note: If the rating specified is not a standard
size for the circuit breaker manufacturer, use
the next largest size.

Ratings specified are for instantaneous
trip circuit breakers.
Maximum current rating for thermal -
magnetic circuit breakers is 250% of
maximum heater FLA.
Maximum current rating of fuses is:
a. 150% of maximum heater FLA for
Class R, K, or L (time delay).
b. 250% of maximum heater FLA for
Class K or L (non -time delay).
c. 300% of maximum heater FLA for
Class J (non -time delay).
If the calculated rating is between standard
sizes, the next larger size may be used. Fuse
size may not exceed switch size.
Wye -delta starters: If the motor nameplate
shows the full load delta line current only,
divide this value by 1.73 or multiply by .58 to
select the proper heater rating.

1. Spare combination starters will be sized for Max. HP if not otherwise specified.
2. Total aux. Interlocks show the min. number of interlocks and include the holding pole. If the quantity listed exceeds those on the
starter/contactor a relay will be provided.
3. Magnetic trip settings. Factory set at low. Adjust per NEC Art. 430 as required.
4. Overloads with Heaters: If motor nameplate data is not supplied by customer, Siemens will pick heater coils for FLA per table for
1800 RPM and service factor of 1.15. Motor nameplate data must be checked by user before energizing unit. Check heater coil
for proper size. ESP100 Overloads: Overload current range is shown followed by number of passes thru sensing window, if more
than one. Effective overload range equals overload current range divided by number of passes.
5. 80" Max. Shipping Split.
6. Dimensions shown are nominal and subject to change. Areas may be restricted due to horizontal ground bus, vertical bus, or
sections with transformers. Request certified dimension drawings for installation. For NEMA 3R dimensions reference D63535
outlines.
7. All fractional millimeters are rounded up to the next higher mm. Ex: 124.1 = 125.
8. With lighting transformers and autotransformers, NEMA 12 bottom plates are non -removable and conduit entry is severely
reduced.
9. For 2 Speed starters, variable torque is assumed to be the type unless otherwise indicated by the customer.
10. If kW is the only rating provided, the Amps are based on the following calculation: Kw to AMPS = (Kw x 1000) / (1.73xExP.F.)
P.F. will vary based on motor size. E = System Voltage P.F. = Power Factor.
11. Sections 30" — 60" wide never have vertical wireway doors.
12. A pull box is generally used to provide additional cable bending space for incoming main feeds or bus duct connections. They are
shipped as a separate item, which must be mounted on the MCC in the field.
13. A top hat is a pull box supplied with incoming line bus extensions for mounting inverted main lugs only. They are shipped as a
separate item, which must be mounted on the MCC in the field.
14. If nameplate data is not supplied for units, blank nameplates will be supplied.
15. Pilot devices are 22mm as standard. (30mm optional)
16. For NEMA Type 2 MCC's, lifting devices are supplied bolted to the shipping skid. If the lifting device is required, the drip shield
must be temporarily removed to install the lifting device.

Form # SFFM-15470-0201
17. Lifting device mounted to top of MCC increases the shipping height to 98" / 2490mm.
18. In general, MCCs may contain components, which require derating above 6000 feet. In addition, distribution transformers require
derating above 3,300 feet. VFD and RVSS devices require derating at altitudes above 3000 feet.
19. On NEMA 12, MCC's, all 800a or larger disconnect devices use a door mounted bustle, which increases the MCC depth by 8"
(203mm).
20. The sloped roof of the Nema 3R structure is not designed or intended to support or seal top entry.
21. Fuse clip sizes are based on time delay fuses, unless otherwise shown.
22. When specified, ring tongue termination is used on devices where possible.
