EXPANSION JOINT NOTES:
1. SEE SPECIAL PROVISIONS FOR MATERIALS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS NOT
SPECIFICALLY CALLED OUT IN THE PLANS.
2. THE MODULAR EXPANSION JOINT SHALL BE DESIGNED FOR AASHTO HS-20
LIVE LOAD PLUS 30% FOR IMPACT.
3. THE EXPANSION JOINT SHALL HAVE A MINIMUM RANGE OF MOVEMENT OF
7'/2 INCHES, MEASURED NORMAL TO THE CENTERLINE OF THE JOINT.
4. THE FOLLOWING MODULAR EXPANSION JOINTS ARE PRE -APPROVED:
(1) WABO—MAURER MODULAR EXPANSION JOINT, MODEL NO. D--780.
(2) ACME MODULAR EXPANSION JOINT, MSB MODEL NO. 900.
5. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL SUBMIT AN OVERALL PLAN OF THE JOINTS ALONG
WITH DETAILS OF THE JOINT ADOPTED, TOGETHER WITH INSTALLATION
PROCEDURES AND WATERPROOFING INSTRUCTIONS TO THE ENGINEER FOR
REVIEW PRIOR TO FABRICATION AND SUBSEQUENT INSTALLATION.
6. THE CONTRACTOR, IN HIS BID, SHALL ALLOW AT LEAST (:t) DAYS OF
ON -THE -JOB -SITE INSTRUCTION FCRTHE CONTRACTOR'S PERSONNEL BY AN
AUTHORIZED MANUFACTURER'S REPRESENTATIVE FAMILIAR WITH THE
FABRICATION AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURES NEEDED TO OBTAIN A
WATERPROOF EXPANSION JOINT. THE r DAYS SHALL BE APPORTIONED
AT LEAST AS FOLLOWS:
DAY, STAGE I -- PIER 1 INSTALLATION
.. DAY` STAGE I -- PIER 12 INSTALLATION
k DAY STAGE 11 -- PIER 1 INSTALLATION
DAYSTAGE I1 -- PIER 12 INSTALLATION
THE EXPANSION JOINT EXTRUSIONS AND NEOPRENE EXPANSION GLANDS
SHALL BE CONTINUOUS ACROSS THE ENTIRE BRIDGE.
8. THE NEOPRENE EXPANSION GLANDS SHALL BE MOUNTED SO THAT T1 ;E
EXPANSION SEALS MAY BE REMOVED FOR FUTURE MAINTENANCE.
9. TO FACILITATE THE REQUIREMENT THAT THE NEOPRENE EXPANSION JOINT
GLANDS BE CONTINUOUS ACROSS THE BRIDGE THEY MAY BE REMOVED AT
THE CONTRACTOR'S OPTION FOR ONE (1) WEEK WHILE JOINING THE STAGE I
AND STAGE 11 EXTRUSIONS. CONTRACTOR WILL HAVE TO TEMPORARILY
SEAL THE EXPANSION JOINT IN STAGE I BRIDGE DURING THIS PERIOD.
10. THE BRIDGE IS TO BE BUILT IN TWO STAGES, STAGE I (SOUTH) AND STAGE 11
(NORTH). THE STAGE I AND STAGE 11 EXPANSION JOINT EXTRUSIONS SHALL
BE JOINED IN THE FIELD. SEE SHEET 40.
11. THE EXPANSION JOINT IN STAGE I IS TO BE SET WITH AN "A" DISTANCE OF
7.25 INCHES. STAGE 11 EXTRUSIONS TO MATCH LOCATION OF STAGE I
EXTRUSIONS. PROVIDE GAP ADJUSTMENT DEVICES FOR STAGE 11 EXPANSION
JOINT FIELD ADJUSTMENTS.
THE ASSUMED TEMPERATURE AT JOINT SETTING IS 640F. IF THE TEMPERATURE
DIFFERS FROM THIS FIGURE, ADJUST THE EXPANSION JOINT SETTING TO
ACCOUNT FOR THIS TEMPERATURE VARIATION.
12. THE EXPANSION JOINT IN STAGE I I SHALL BE CONNECTED AND SET TO THE CORRECT
ELEVATIONS AND LOCATION AND MADE CONTINUOUS WITH THE EXPANSION JOINT
IN STAGE 1.
13. THE CROSS-SECTION THROUGH THE BRIDGE SHOWS THE SUGGESTED LOCATION
OF THE SUPPORT BOXES. IF THE CONTRACTOR ELECTS TO CHANGE THIS
ARRANGEMENT THEN THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE OUTER SUPPORT BOX AND
THE CONCRETE TRAFFIC BARRIER SHALL NOT EXCEED 2I-0". THE MINIMUM DISTANCE
BETWEEN CENTERLINE SUPPORT BOX AND CENTERLINE GIRDER SHALL NOT
BE LESS THAN 1'-0".
14. ALL STEEL HARDWARE, INCLUDING EXTRUSIONS, HEADED STUDS, PLATES
ANGLES, ETC. (EXCEPT STAINLESS STEEL PLATES), SHALL BE HOB' DIP
GALVANIZED (OR PAINTED WITH 4 MI-LS MINIMUM OF AN INORGANIC ZINC
RICH PAINT) AFTER FABRICATION. IF CERTAIN ITEMS CANNOT BE HOT DIP
GALVANIZED (SUCH AS SPRINGS, ETC., SINCE IT MIGHT AFFECT THEIR
. OPERATION), THE CONTRACTOR SHALL SO STATE 114 HIS SUBMITTAL TO THE
ENGINEER AND ANOTHER METHOD OF WEATHERPROOFING SHALL BE
PROPOSED IN LIEU OF GALVANIZING.
15. ALL FIELD DAMAGED GALVANIZED SURFACES SHALL BE PAINTED WITH
TWO (2) COATS OF AN ORGANIC BASED ZINC RICH PAINT.
16. ALL REINFORCING BARS LOCATED IN EXPANSION JOINT BLOCKOUT TO BE
_ EPDXY COATED AND SHALL BE INCLUDED IN THE UNIT BIC PRICE FOR THE EXPANSION JOINT SYSTEM.
4?
17. ALL PLATES AND SHAPES SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH ASTM A242,
ALP ENGINEERS {. EXCEPT STAINLESS STEEL WHICH SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE A!'-_11RDANCE WITH
ST-IN-PLACE CONCRETE TRAFFIC v.''KIi"`, CIVIL AND STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING CONSULTANTS A3041 UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE.
