SPECIFICATIONS FOR DETENTION POND CONSTRUCTION
GENERAL:
1. The contractor shall have an approved set of plans and specifications
on -site at all times during construction of the detention pond. The pond
berm layout is the responsibility of the contractor.
2. A professional engineer or representative should observe and monitor the
construction of the pond.
3 3. The detention pond should be constructed in accordance with Nelson -
Couvrette and Associates, Inc. geotechnical engineering report Honey Creek
Ridge, dated May 17, 1991 and letter dated August 4, 1994.
4. Substititions or changes shall be approved by the design geotechnical
engineer prior to use.
NOTE 1:
1.1.Subgrade for the pond berm areas should be prepared by stripping the
surficiai native soils 'and fill soils down to the native glacial outwash
soils.
1.2.Prior to fill placement the resulting subgrade should be compacted to a
firm and non -yielding condition.
1.3.The berm structural fill should consist of soils free of organic material,
deleterious materials and particles greater than 6 inches in size.
1.4.Berm structural fill should be placed in 6 to 8 inch loose lifts and
compacted to 90 percent of the modified Proctor maximum dry density (ASTM D
1557) .
1.5.The resulting embankment slopes should be compacted to a minimum of 90
percent of ASTM D 1557.
1.6The downstream embankment face of Pond B should be constructed such that a
minimum of 3 feet of low permeability soils are placed below the spillway.
Soils to be used for this material should be provided to the geotechnical
engineer for his approval prior to placement.
NOTE 2:
2.1.Synthetic liner with minimum 20 mil thickeness shall be used to line the
detention ponds. The contractor should provide specifica data that
indicates the liner is suitable for this use.
2.2.Prior to liner placement, the subgrade should be prepared by removing
topsoil, fill organic material and other deleterious materials to reveal
dense native '1.
2.3.Side slopes shall be graded to a 3H:1V inclination or flatter.
2.4.Trench 18 inches deep and 12 inches wide shall be excavated at the top of
the berm and the sides of the pond. The liner shall be anchored at the top
by placing it in the trench and backfilling with structural fill.
2.5.The liner material shall be placed and sealed in accordance with the
manufacturers specifications. Seals around pipes that penetrate the liner
also should be in accordance with the manufacturers specifications.
2.6.Minimum of 12 inches of topsoil shall be placed on top of the liner as
protection. Topsoil shall be free of particles greater than 6 inches in
size, large roots and sticks.
NOTE 3
3.1The pond spillway shall be underlined by low permeable soil a minimum of
three feet thick, as stated in 1.6. The spillway should be contoured into
the embankment face such that the enough room for the 4 inch Geoweb liner
system.
3.2.A 4 inch deep Geoweb system should be placed on the embankment face and
anchored in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations.
3.3.The geoweb cells should be filled starting from the bottom of the
embankment up to the top. Fill should consists of a mostly granular soils
suitable for promoting vegetation.
3.4The face of the spillway should be vegetated with suitable ground cover to
resist erosion. This vegetation should be maintain until it is well
established.
ROCKERY DETAIL
1. The base course of rocks shall be sized equal to half the height of the
rockery (H/2) for 2H:1V back slopes and H/3 for a level back slope. This
dimension should extend from the face of the rockery, into the slope.
2. Rockeries greater than 8 feet in height should be designed and inspected by
a licensed engineer with geotechnical expertise.
3. Guidelines as set forth in the Associated Rockery Contractors manual should
be followed for rockery construction.
