GENERAL The amount of concrete required to anchor horizontal bends, tees, and dead ends depends on the strength of the soil. The methods of placing concrete to keep the joint accessible is shown in Figure 1. The area in square feet of concrete which must bear against the side of the trench is found by dividing the thrustinpounds shown in Table T by the safe beaCRlII load of the soil as shown in Table 2. B. 1. The sizing procedure is for horizontal or downward thrust only. 2. Height of the thrust block must be equal to or less than 1 /2 the depth from the ground surface to the block base. 3. The thrust block bearing face is approximately rectangular. 4. The concrete blocking shall be as per APWA SYMBOLSecification 74-2.14. Tiebolts shall be installed to pull against the mechanical joint body and not the M.J. follower. Torque nuts at 75-90 foot pounds for 3/4" nuts. Install tiecouplings with both rods threaded equal distance into tiecouplings. Arrange tierods symmetrically around the pipe. Where a Manufacturer's mechanical joint valve or fitting is supplied with slots for "T" bolts instead of holes, a flanged valve with a flange by mechanical joint adaptor shall be used instead, so as to provide adequate space for locating tiebolt. Where a continuous run of pipe is required to be restrained, no run of restrained pipe shall be greater than 60 feet in length betwee fittings. Insert long body solid sleeves as required on longer runs to keep tierod lengths to the 60 foot maximum. Pipe used in continuously restrained runs shall be mechanical joint pipe and tiebolts shall be installed as rod guides at each joint. Where poly wrapping is not required, all tiebolts, tienuts, tiecouplings, tierods shall be galvanized. All disturbed sections will be painted, to the inspector's satisfaction, with ATCO #2221, or approved equal.
