GENERAL NOTES
1. ALL WORK AND WORK MATERIAL SHALL BE IN CONFORMANCE WITH THE STANDARDS
AND SPECIFICATIONS OF THE CITY OF RENTON PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT AND THE
LATEST EDITION OF THE WSDOT/APWA STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS, AS APPROVED
AND MODIFIED BY THE CITY OF RENTON IN THE RENTON STANDARD PLANS &
SPECIFICATIONS. A SET OF APPROVED PLANS SHALL BE KEPT ON SITE AT ALL TIMES
DURING CONSTRUCTION.
2. WORKING DAYS AND HOURS OF WORK SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE
SPECIFICATIONS. SEE PLANS AND SPECIAL PROVISIONS SECTION 1-08.13 FOR SPECIFIC
WORK CONSTRAINTS.
3. THE CITY OF RENTON AND BHC CONSULTANTS LLC ASSUME NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR
EXISTING UTILITY LOCATIONS AND ELEVATIONS. ALL LOCATIONS OF EXISTING UTILITIES
SHOWN ARE APPROXIMATE AND IT SHALL BE THE CONTRACTOR'S RESPONSIBILITY TO
VERIFY THE TRUE AND CORRECT LOCATION AND ELEVATION SO AS TO AVOID DAMAGE
OR DISTURBANCE PRIOR TO COMMENCEMENT OF ANY CONSTRUCTION.
4. A PRE -CONSTRUCTION CONFERENCE (PROVIDE MIN 7 DAY NOTICE) AND A 24 HOUR
NOTICE SHALL BE REQUIRED PRIOR TO STARTING NEW CONSTRUCTION. IT SHALL BE THE
CONTRACTOR'S RESPONSIBILITY TO SECURE ALL NECESSARY PERMITS PRIOR TO
STARTING CONSTRUCTION. (CONSTRUCTION OBSERVATION WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED BY
A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE CITY OF RENTON.) IT SHALL BE THE CONTRACTOR'S
RESPONSIBILITY TO NOTIFY THE PUBLIC WORKS INSPECTOR 24 HOURS IN ADVANCE OF
BACKFILLING ALL CONSTRUCTION.
5. CONTRACTOR IS SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MEANS, METHODS AND SEQUENCES OF
CONSTRUCTION AND FOR THE SAFETY OF WORKERS AND OTHERS ON THE
CONSTRUCTION SITE.
6. IT SHALL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR TO OBTAIN RIGHT-OF-WAY AND
ANY OTHER RELATED PERMITS PRIOR TO ANY CONSTRUCTION.
7. PLANS APPROVED BY THE CITY OF RENTON, PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT SHALL TAKE
PRECEDENCE OVER ALL OTHER PLANS.
8. A COPY OF THESE APPROVED PLANS MUST BE ON THE JOB SITE WHENEVER
CONSTRUCTION IS IN PROGRESS.
9. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE THE CITY OF RENTON WITH AN AS -BUILT DRAWING OF
THE SANITARY SEWER SYSTEM, WHICH HAS BEEN STAMPED AND SIGNED BY A LICENSED
PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER OR LICENSED PROFESSIONAL SURVEYOR.
10. BACKFILL SHALL BE PLACED EQUALLY ON BOTH SIDES OF THE PIPE IN LAYERS WITH A
LOOSE AVERAGE DEPTH OF 6 INCHES, MAXIMUM DEPTH OF 8 INCHES, THOROUGHLY
COMPACTING EACH LAYER TO 95 PERCENT OF MAXIMUM DENSITY. THESE COMPACTED
LAYERS MUST EXTEND FOR ONE PIPE DIAMETER ON EACH SIDE OF THE PIPE OR TO THE
SIDE OF THE TRENCH. MATERIALS TO COMPLETE THE FILL OVER PIPE SHALL BE THE
SAME AS DESCRIBED.
11. OPEN CUT ROAD CROSSINGS FOR UTILITY TRENCHES ON EXISTING TRAVELED ROADWAY
SHALL BE BACKFILLED WITH CRUSHED ROCK AND MECHANICALLY COMPACTED UNLESS
OTHERWISE APPROVED BY THE ENGINEER.
12. DATUM FOR VERTICAL CONTROL SHALL BE NORTH AMERICAN VERTICAL DATUM 1988
METERS, AND FOR HORIZONTAL CONTROL SHALL BE NORTH AMERICAN DATUM 1983/1991
METERS UNLESS OTHERWISE APPROVED BY THE CITY OF RENTON PUBLIC WORKS
DEPARTMENT OR NOTED ON THESE PLANS. REFERENCE BENCHMARK AND ELEVATIONS
ARE NOTED ON THE PLANS.
13. ALL DISTURBED AREAS SHALL BE SEEDED AND MULCHED OR OTHERWISE STABILIZED TO
THE SATISFACTION OF THE DEPARTMENT FOR THE PREVENTION OF ON -SITE EROSION
AFTER THE COMPLETION OF CONSTRUCTION.
14- ALL PIPE AND APPURTENANCES SHALL BE LAID ON A PROPERLY PREPARED FOUNDATION
IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS OF THE CITY OF RENTON
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT AND THE LATEST EDITION OF THE WSDOT/APWA
STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS, AS APPROVED AND MODIFIED BY THE CITY OF
RENTON IN THE RENTON STANDARD PLANS & SPECIFICATIONS. THIS SHALL INCLUDE
NECESSARY LEVELING OF THE TRENCH BOTTOM OR THE TOP OF THE FOUNDATION
MATERIAL, AS WELL AS PLACEMENT AND COMPACTION OF REQUIRED BEDDING
MATERIAL, TO UNIFORM GRADE SO THAT THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE PIPE WILL BE
SUPPORTED ON A UNIFORMLY DENSE, UNYIELDING BASE.
15. SANITARY SEWER PIPE MATERIAL SHALL BE AS SPECIFIED AND AS SHOWN ON THE
PLANS.
16. IN UNIMPROVED AREAS, MANHOLE TO EXTEND MINIMUM 6 INCHES AND MAXIMUM 12
INCHES ABOVE FINISHED GRADE OR MUST HAVE MINIMUM 2' DIAMETER CONCRETE RING
POURED AT GRADE. IN PAVED AREA, COVER MUST SLOPE IN ALL DIRECTIONS TO MATCH
PAVING.
17. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL VERIFY ALL UTILITY LOCATIONS PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION BY
CALLING THE UNDERGROUND LOCATE LINE AT 1-800-424-5555 A MINIMUM OF 48 HOURS
PRIOR TO ANY EXCAVATION.
18. A PROJECT GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING REPORT IS AVAILABLE FOR CONTRACTOR
REFERENCE AS NOTED IN THE CONTRACT BIDDING DOCUMENTS.
19. OVERHEAD ELECTRICAL POWER, TELEPHONE, CABLE TV, AND OTHER OVERHEAD LINES
ARE GENERALLY NOT SHOWN. THE LINES THAT ARE SHOWN ARE LOCATED BY
POINT-TO-POINT, POLE OR TOWER TO POLE OR TOWER. DETERMINE THE EXTENT OF
HAZARDS OR IMPACTS ON CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES CREATED BY OVERHEAD OR
UNDERGROUND ELECTRICAL POWER, TELEPHONE, CABLE TV, AND OTHER LINES IN ALL
AREAS, AND FOLLOW PROCEDURES DURING CONSTRUCTION AS REQUIRED BY LAW AND
REGULATIONS. PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION, MEET WITH UTILITY OWNERS TO DETERMINE

DRAWINGS SYMBOLICALLY. CONSTRUCT MANHOLES AND OTHER STRUCTURES AS
SHOWN ON DETAIL DRAWINGS AND AS SPECIFIED.
21. RIGHT-OF-WAY AND PROPERTY LINES SHOWN ARE APPROXIMATE ONLY.
22. ALL UTILITIES SHALL BE SUPPORTED AND MAINTAINED DURING CONSTRUCTION

24. PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT: NO CONSTRUCTION RELATED ACTIVITY SHALL
CONTRIBUTE TO THE DEGRADATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT, ALLOW MATERIAL TO ENTER
SURFACE OR GROUND WATERS, OR ALLOW PARTICULATE EMISSIONS TO THE
ATMOSPHERE, WHICH EXCEED STATE OR FEDERAL STANDARDS. ANY ACTIONS THAT
POTENTIALLY ALLOW A DISCHARGE TO STATE WATERS MUST HAVE PRIOR APPROVAL OF

SHORING. POLE PROTECTION/ SUPPORTING SYSTEMS USED WHILE EXCAVATING SHALL
COMPLY WITH WAC 155-655 GENERAL PROTECTION REQUIREMENTS, ITEM (9) AND SHALL NOT
AFFECT THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF POLES WHILE THE SYSTEMS ARE IN PLACE OR AFTER

28. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR FULL RESTORATION OF ALL EXISTING

29. THESE DRAWINGS AND THE IDEAS AND DESIGNS INCORPORATED HEREIN SHALL NOT BE USED,
IN WHOLE OR IN PART, FOR ANY OTHER PROJECT WITHOUT WRITTEN AUTHORIZATION OF CITY
OF RENTON AND BHC CONSULTANTS, LLC.
30. CITY OF RENTON AND WSDOT STD PLANS REFERENCED ON THE DWGS ARE INCLUDED AS AN
ATTACHMENT TO THE PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS. ANY OTHER STD PLANS READ TO COMPLETE
THE WORK IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONTRACT DOCUMENTS CAN BE OBTAINED FROM THE

TRAFFIC CONTROL NOTES
1. AN APPROVED TRAFFIC CONTROL PLAN MUST BE OBTAINED FROM THE CITY OF
RENTON'S TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT PRIOR TO BEGINNING ANY WORK IN THE
PUBLIC RIGHT-OF-WAY. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PREPARE AND SUBMIT FOR REVIEW
AND APPROVAL ALL TRAFFIC CONTROL PLANS.
2. SUNSET BLVD N IS A HIGH TRAFFIC VOLUME ROAD WITH MULTIPLE LANES. CONTRACTOR
SHALL FAMILIARIZE THEMSELVES WITH THE AREA IN ORDER TO PREPARE A TRAFFIC
CONTROL PLAN THAT MINIMIZES IMPACTS TO TRAFFIC FLOW AND IS ACCEPTABLE TO THE
CITY OF RENTON'S TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT.
3. DUE TO THE PROXIMITY OF THE CONSTRUCTION SITE TO THE SUNSET BLVD N OFF -RAMP
FROM SOUTHBOUND 1-405, TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES WILL NEED TO BE PLACED ALONG
THIS FREEWAY OFF -RAMP. IT IS THE CONTRACTOR'S RESPONSIBILITY TO OBTAIN ALL
PERMITS AND TRAFFIC CONTROL REVIEW REQUIRED BY WASHINGTON STATE
DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION FOR THIS PORTION OF THE TRAFFIC CONTROL PLAN.
4. THE HOUSER WAY BYPASS ROAD/TUNNEL WILL NEED TO BE TEMPORARILY CLOSED
DURING CONSTRUCTION IN SUNSET BLVD N. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL SUPPLY
ELECTRONIC READER BOARDS INDICATING CLOSURE DATE(S) AND TIMES. THESE
ELECTRONIC READER BOARDS SHALL BE PLACED AT EACH END OF THE HOUSER WAY
BYPASS ROAD/TUNNEL A MINIMUM OF TEN (10) DAYS PRIOR TO THE CLOSURE(S).
5. ALL TRAFFIC CONTROL SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE MUTCD MANUAL.
6. WORKING DAYS AND HOURS FOR CONSTRUCTION IN SUNSET BLVD N SHALL BE
SATURDAYS AND/OR SUNDAYS FROM 7AM TO 8PM.
7. ONE LANE OF TRAVEL IN EACH DIRECTION IN SUNSET BLVD N SHALL BE MAINTAINED
DURING WORK HOURS.
8. ALL LANES OF TRAFFIC SHALL BE REOPENED AT THE END OF EACH WORK DAY.
GENERAL BNSF NOTES & REQUIREMENTS
1. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL COMPLY WITH ALL REQUIREMENTS OF THE PROJECT'S BNSF
TEMPORARY OCCUPANCY PERMIT AND THE REQUIREMENTS NOTED ON THESE PLANS AND
IN THE SPECIFICATIONS. THE BNSF TEMPORARY OCCUPANCY PERMIT IS INCLUDED IN THE
PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS FOR REFERENCE.
2. THE CONTRACTOR'S WORK IN BNSF ROW SHALL BE LIMITED TO THE AREA DENOTED AS
`BNSF PREMISES° ON DRAWING C-1. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL NOT OCCUPY BNSF ROW
OUTSIDE THIS AREA WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL FROM BNSF.
3. THE CONTRACTOR AND ANY SUBCONTRACTORS PERFORMING WORK IN THE BNSF
PREMISES IDENTIFIED ON THE PLANS SHALL COMPLETE THE SAFETY -TRAINING PROGRAM
ON THE BNSF WEBSITE http://BNSFcontractor.com PRIOR TO COMMENCING ANY WORK. THE
TRAINING MUST BE COMPLETED NO MORE THAN ONE YEAR IN ADVANCE OF ENTRY ON THE
BNSF PREMISES.
4. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL NOTIFY THE BNSF ROADMASTER, DANIEL BAKER AT 2454
OCCIDENTAL AVE S STREET, SEATTLE, WA 98134, TELEPHONE (206) 625-6462, AT LEAST TEN
(10) BUSINESS DAYS PRIOR TO ENTERING THE BNSF PREMISES. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL
NOTIFY THE CITY WHEN USE OF THE BNSF PREMISES IS COMPLETE.
5. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL USE ONLY PUBLIC ROADWAYS TO CROSS FROM ONE SIDE OF THE
RAILROAD TRACKS TO THE OTHER. CROSSING THE RAILROAD TRACK IN THE BNSF
PREMISES SHOWN ON THE PLANS WITH EQUIPMENT IS PROHIBITED.
6. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL NOT STORE ANY EQUIPMENT OR MATERIALS WITHIN THE BNSF
PREMISES OR WITHIN 25 FEET OF RAILROAD TRACK CENTERLINE. ONLY EQUIPMENT AND
MATERIALS THAT REQUIRE TEMPORARY OR PERMANENT INSTALLATION TO PERFORM THE
WORK WILL BE ALLOWED WITHIN THIS AREA.
7. THE RAILROAD IS AN ACTIVE RAIL LINE USED BY BOEING FOR DELIVERIES. THE
CONTRACTOR SHALL NOTIFY THE CITY AT LEAST TEN(10) BUSINESS DAYS PRIOR TO
ENTERING THE BNSF PREMISES TO ALLOW FOR COORDINATION WITH BNSF AND BOEING AS
REQUIRED.
8. ANY AND ALL WORK WITHIN 25 FEET OF RAILROAD TRACK CENTERLINE REQUIRES A BNSF
FLAGGER ONSITE. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PAY FOR AND SCHEDULE A BNSF FLAGGER
ONE MONTH PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES.

EROSION CONTROL NOTES
1. BEFORE ANY CONSTRUCTION OR DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITY OCCURS, A
PRECONSTRUCTION MEETING MUST BE HELD WITH THE CITY OF RENTON,
PUBLIC WORKS DESIGN ENGINEER.
2. ALL LIMITS OF CLEARING AND AREAS OF VEGETATION PRESERVATION AS
PRESCRIBED ON THE PLAN(S) SHALL BE CLEARLY FLAGGED IN THE FIELD
AND OBSERVED DURING CONSTRUCTION.
3. ALL REQUIRED SEDIMENTATION/EROSION CONTROL FACILITIES MUST BE
CONSTRUCTED AND IN OPERATION PRIOR TO LAND CLEARING AND/OR
CONSTRUCTION TO ENSURE THAT SEDIMENT LADEN WATER DOES NOT
ENTER THE NATURAL DRAINAGE SYSTEM. ALL EROSION AND SEDIMENT
FACILITIES SHALL BE MAINTAINED IN A SATISFACTORY CONDITION UNTIL
SUCH TIME THAT CLEARING AND/OR CONSTRUCTION IS COMPLETE AND
POTENTIAL FOR ON -SITE EROSION HAS PASSED. THE IMPLEMENTATION,
MAINTENANCE, REPLACEMENT AND ADDITIONS TO
EROSION/SEDIMENTATION CONTROL SYSTEMS SHALL BE THE
RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR.
4. THE EROSION AND SEDIMENTATION CONTROL SYSTEMS DEPICTED ON THE
PLANS ARE INTENDED TO BE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO MEET
ANTICIPATED SITE CONDITIONS. AS CONSTRUCTION PROGRESSES AND
UNEXPECTED OR SEASONAL CONDITIONS DICTATE, THE CONTRACTOR
SHALL ANTICIPATE THAT MORE EROSION AND SEDIMENTATION CONTROL
FACILITIES WILL BE NECESSARY TO ENSURE COMPLETE SILTATION
CONTROL ON THE PROPOSED SITE. DURING THE COURSE OF
CONSTRUCTION, IT SHALL BE THE OBLIGATION AND RESPONSIBILITY OF
THE CONTRACTOR TO ADDRESS ANY NEW CONDITIONS THAT MAY BE
CREATED BY THE ACTIVITIES AND TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL FACILITIES,
OVER AND ABOVE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS, AS MAY BE NEEDED, TO
PROTECT ADJACENT PROPERTIES AND WATER QUALITY OF THE RECEIVING
DRAINAGE SYSTEM.
5. APPROVAL OF THIS PLAN IS FOR EROSION/SEDIMENTATION CONTROL
ONLY, IT DOES NOT CONSTITUTE AN APPROVAL OF STORM DRAINAGE
DESIGN, SIZE NOR LOCATION OF PIPES, RESTRICTORS, CHANNELS, OR
RETENTION FACILITIES.
6. DURING THE TIME PERIOD OF OCTOBER 1ST THROUGH APRIL 30TH, ALL
PROJECT DISTRIBUTED SOIL AREAS GREATER THAN 5,000 SQUARE FEET,
THAT ARE TO BE LEFT UN -WORKED FOR MORE THAN 12 HOURS, SHALL BE
COVERED BY MULCH, SODDING OR PLASTIC COVERING.
7. IN ANY AREA WHICH HAS BEEN STRIPPED OF VEGETATION AND WHERE NO
FURTHER WORK IS ANTICIPATED FOR A PERIOD 30 DAYS OR MORE, ALL
DISTURBED AREAS MUST BE IMMEDIATELY STABILIZED WITH MULCHING,
GRASS PLANTING OR OTHER APPROVED EROSION CONTROL TREATMENT
APPLICABLE TO THE TIME OF YEAR. GRASS SEEDING ALONE WILL BE
ACCEPTABLE ONLY DURING THE MONTHS OF APRIL THROUGH SEPTEMBER,
INCLUSIVE. SEEDING MAY PROCEED, HOWEVER, WHENEVER IT IS IN THE
INTEREST OF THE CONTRACTOR, BUT MUST BE AUGMENTED WITH
MULCHING, NETTING OR OTHER TREATMENT APPROVED BY THE CITY OF
RENTON, OUTSIDE THE SPECIFIED TIME PERIOD.
8. FOR ALL EROSION/SEDIMENTATION CONTROL PONDS WHERE THE DEAD
STORAGE DEPTH EXCEEDS 6 INCHES, A FENCE IS REQUIRED WITH A
MINIMUM HEIGHT OF THREE (3) FEET, 3:1 SIDE SLOPES.
9. A TEMPORARY GRAVEL CONSTRUCTION ENTRANCE, 24 FEET X 50 FEET X 8
INCHES OF 4 TO 6 INCH QUARRY SPALLS SHALL BE LOCATED AT ALL
POINTS OF VEHICULAR INGRESS AND EGRESS TO THE CONSTRUCTION
SITE.
10. THE EROSION AND SEDIMENTATION CONTROL MEASURES PROVIDED FOR
CONSTRUCTION OF THE PROJECT SHALL BE IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE
CURRENT EDITION OF THE WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF
ECOLOGY STORM WATER MANAGEMENT MANUAL FOR WESTERN
WASHINGTON.
11. DEWATERING WATER SHALL BE HANDLED TO ENSURE DISCHARGE MEETS
REGULATING WATER QUALITY STANDARDS. DEWATERING DISCHARGE AND
OTHER EROSION AND STORMWATER CONTROL ACTIVITIES SHALL
CONFORM TO AN APPROVED CONSTRUCTION STORM WATER POLLUTION
CONTROL PLAN.
12. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR STREET CLEANING,
STREET SWEEPING (ONSITE AND OFFSITE) UPON THE DIRECTION OF THE
ENGINEER TO UNDERTAKE THE MEASURES DEEMED NECESSARY TO
EFFECT SUCH CONTROL.
13. EROSION CONTROL FACILITIES SHALL BE INSPECTED AFTER EACH STORM
AND DAILY DURING PROLONGED RAINFALL BY THE CONTRACTOR AND
MAINTAINED AS NECESSARY OR AS DIRECTED BY THE ENGINEER TO
ENSURE THEIR CONTINUED FUNCTIONING. NECESSARY REPAIRS OR
REPLACEMENT OR FACILITIES SHALL BE ACCOMPLISHED PROMPTLY.
SEDIMENT DEPOSITS SHALL BE REMOVED AFTER EACH STORM EVENT
AND/OR WHEN THE LEVEL OF DEPOSITION REACHES APPROXIMATELY
ONE-HALF THE MAXIMUM POTENTIAL DEPTH.
