The ban has been in effect since 2005. The discharge of consumer fireworks is permitted in some neighboring jurisdictions, such as unincorporated King County, including Skyway and Fairwood, and the City of Kent, but fireworks of all types are banned within Renton city limits. Fire and police department units will patrol specific geographic areas looking for violations and will confiscate all type of fireworks. Citations will also be issued with violators subject to both civil and criminal penalties and a $205 fine. Additionally, the sale, possession or use of explosive devices, such as M-80s, M-100s and homemade or modified fireworks, is a felony offense. Violators will face criminal charges. The city has prepared and distributed 2,500 informational posters and has messages running on reader boards throughout the city. Reminders will also be sent by phone, text and email. Nationally, more fires are reported on the 4th of July than on any other day. In Washington state, a total of 245 fires and 241 injuries related to fireworks were reported. The majority of the injuries was to children age 14 and under and most involved sparklers. A public fireworks display will cap off Renton’s Fabulous 4th of July Celebration, co-sponsored by The Landing. The festivities at Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park will start at 9:00 a.m. and conclude with the fireworks show at 10:00 p.m. Entertainment, food, competitions and activities for all ages will be available.
