HomeMy WebLinkAbout05_Mayors Newsletter_081116Giving back Seattle Seahawks Doug Baldwin took some time from training camp this week to stop by my office and discuss an exciting project we’re working on for residents in our Cascade/ Benson community. For the past year, Doug and I, along with some of my department heads, have been exploring ways to fulfill his dream of serving youth in this community, which has also been a priority of mine and the City Council. In 2008, the residents of the Cascade/ Benson area annexed to the city with a hope for change. For decades, it had been a community underserved in areas such as public safety, quality-of-life amenities such as parks, recreation programs and other vital services. Following annexation, the city dealt with the most pressing issues first, such as police protection and roads, while exploring opportunities to begin to address these other needs. Given the significant financial requirements for these types of improvements, we needed to identify partnerships to help us move forward. That’s where Doug Baldwin and the Renton School District come in. Doug was provided with a support base as a youngster and understands the value of creating opportunities for kids to succeed and achieve their dreams. He has a sincere passion to help kids. And the City of Renton and Renton School District share this goal. So through this partnership, we’re making plans to launch a capital campaign with hopes to build the Family First Community Center, a multi-purpose facility that will provide valuable services for kids and families, from sports and athletic activities, arts, music, health and wellness classes, to tutors and mentors and much more. It’s our goal to provide youth and families with opportunities that are not accessible to them now. While this will be a huge challenge, it is an exciting opportunity for us to make a true difference in the lives of many kids and local families in the Cascade/Benson community. This partnership we have formed is fueled by our collective vision of giving kids an opportunity to be great. It’s a vision that meets an urgent need, keeps our promise to our community, and makes it possible for our children to realize their dreams. We’re excited about this project. And I must admit, there is something very special about having the best wide receiver in the NFL on your team! SEAHAWKS DOUG BALDWIN AND MAYOR LAW City’s recycling efforts win county award The city was one of eight Renton businesses named to the 10th Annual “Best Workplaces for Waste Prevention and Recycling” by King County’s Solid Waste Division. We were honored for three initiatives: a comprehensive waste reduction and recycling program in place; the ability to collect and recycle throughout city facilities; and our revised city policy that requires all surplus items to be transferred internally between city departments before being traded in, donated, or sold. It’s the third time the city’s recycling efforts have been recognized by the county on the list. The other Renton companies on the list are Allpak Container LLC, Kenworth Truck Company, Rainier Crest Apartments, American Classic Homes Real Estate, IKEA, Renton Technical College, and Trojan Lithograph.
