National Public Works Week
Our public works crews are the city’s unsung heroes. When a storm hits, they’re immediately on the
front lines clearing what has fallen or fixing what has broken, no matter the hour. They also oversee our
maintenance, transportation and utilities. Their work is instrumental in maintaining our everyday life
and is the result of hours of preparation and training. These are just some of the reasons I’ve proclaimed
this week National Public Works Week.
Memorial Day ceremony honors our veterans
Memorial Day is a special holiday, that one day when we come together to honor all those who have
made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation.
For a time, it seemed Memorial Day was at risk of being just another day off work and lost in the
anticipation of summer activities to come. In recent years, though, it has returned to a place of honor as
our country has developed a renewed respect for the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women.
I hope you will join with city leaders and veterans at our Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 29,
at 1 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park (523 S. Third St.). The ceremony will honor veterans and include the
laying of wreaths to represent the five branches of the military. Veterans Memorial Park contains nearly
2,000 etched marble plaques, each honoring a military veteran with ties to the city.
Farmers Market kicks off 16th year on June 6
I hope you’ll join me for the opening of the Renton Farmers Market on June 6, at 3 p.m. at The Piazza
downtown. For me, the market opening is the unofficial start to a summer full of community activities
in Renton.
The farmers market is a true family event, featuring farm-fresh produce, food, activities for kids,
entertainment, shopping tips and recipe demonstrations.
If you can’t make opening day, the market runs every Tuesday from 3 to 7 p.m. through September 26.
