HomeMy WebLinkAbout42_Mayors Newsletter_061517With the Fourth of July fast approaching our thoughts certainly turn to spending time with family and friends, cookouts, and fireworks. Please remember the sale and use of fireworks within Renton city limits is prohibited. This ban has been in effect since 2005, when it was passed by the citizens of Renton. The fireworks ban was instituted to protect our citizens and their property. Every year we hear about lives and families affected by the careless discharge of fireworks and we are certainly not immune. There has been a marked decrease in the number of injuries and property damage cause by fireworks since the ban was inacted. To get your fill of pyrotechnics on the 4th, I invite you to Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park for our annual firework spectacular. The display will begin at 10 p.m. and caps a full day of family-oriented activities. JUNE 15, 2017 This Week from the Mayor Denis Law, Mayor VOL. Talbot Hill Elementary visits city hall MicroSociety students from the Talbot Hill Elementary School made their annual visit to city hall last week to learn first-hand about the inner workings of a city. The program teaches students how to run businesses, banks, and establish a city government with branches for taxation and licensing. As a consequence, they are charged with making decisions that affect daily life. In addition to visiting my office and peppering me with questions, they also met with city staff to learn about the budget process, police and fire department operations, and creating volunteer projects. Fireworks ban protects people and property Police Department promotes two At Monday’s city council meeting, Chief Kevin Milosevich introduced the council to two new promotions. Jenny Herman is now one of two supervisors in the staff services division. In announcing her promotion, Chief Milosevich lauded her skills in problem solving, customer service, and knowledge of public records law. Jenny has been with the department since 2005. Sgt. Ryan Rutledge joined the department as a patrol officer in 2004. After a stint as a plain clothes officer in the special operations, he returned to patrol duties in May and was promoted to Sergeant. Chief Milosevich cited the respect Ryan has earned through his leadership skills. Many of you may know that Ryan grew up in Renton and is a graduate of Renton High. My congratulations to Jenny and Ryan on their promotions and for their years of distinguished service to the citizens of Renton. Jenny Herman Sgt. Ryan Rutledge
