HomeMy WebLinkAboutORD 6122CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON ORDINANCE NO. 6122 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON, AUTHORIZING THE DOLLAR AMOUNT AND PERCENTAGE INCREASE FOR THE PROPERTY TAX TO BE LEVIED FOR THE YEAR 2024, PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY, AND ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the City of Renton properly gave notice and City Council held public hearings on October 16, 2023 and October 23, 2023 to consider the City's 2023-2024 proposed budget pursuant to RCW 84.55.120; and WHEREAS, the City Council, after hearing and after duly considering all relevant evidence and testimony presented, has determined that there is a need to increase the property tax revenues from the prior year, in addition to the increase resulting from annexations, the addition of new construction, and improvements to property, and any increases in the value of state - assessed property, in order to discharge the expected expenses and obligation of the city; and WHEREAS, RCW 84.55.120 requires the adoption of a separate ordinance specifically authorizing the property tax increase; NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF RENTON, WASHINGTON, DO ORDAIN AS FOLLOWS: SECTION I. The 2024 regular property tax levy in the amount of $25,783,496 requires an increase of 1.00% or $252,859 above the 2023 levy without consideration for increases attributable to annexation, new construction, improvements to property, and re -levy of prior year refund and correction amounts. If any section, subsection, sentence, clause, phrase, or word of this ordinance should be held to be invalid or unconstitutional by a court of competent jurisdiction, such invalidity or unconstitutionality thereof shall not affect the constitutionality of any other section, subsection, sentence, clause, phrase, or word of this ordinance. SECTION III. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect five (5) days after publication of a summary of this ordinance in the City's official newspaper.
