Dear Andrew Van Gordon,
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the project LUA23-000361 located at 99, 101 and 107
Williams Ave S. Based on the information provided and our understanding of the project and its APE, the
Duwamish Tribe recommends and requests an archaeological survey performed for this project,
especially if excavation cuts below fill. This is in an area the Duwamish Tribe considers culturally
significant and has a high probability to have unknown archaeological deposits.
The project location is within a mile of two of our ancestral village sites and stream places names, and in
close proximity to at least 3 known archaeological sites. The DAHP WISAARD predictive model indicates
that a survey is highly advised with a very high risk for encountering cultural resources. The geotechnical
report indicates that soils consists of loose alluvial silt and sand with scattered organic layers.
We request that if any archaeological work or monitoring is performed, we would like notification.
Cultural and archaeological resources are non-renewable and are best discovered prior to ground
disturbance. The Tribe would also like the opportunity to be present if or when an archaeologist is on
site in the event that an artifact or cultural resource is encountered.
In addition, the Tribe strongly recommends that only native vegetation be used for any proposed
landscaping and that wetland and stream buffers are maintained to enhance native avian life and native
pollinators as well as to mitigate seasonal urban flooding.
Thank you,
Nancy A Sackman
