Wolde Critical Area Restoration, LUA24-000040, ECF, CAE
Dear Andrew Van Gordon,
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the project LUA24-000040 located at 13701 SE May
Valley Rd. Based on the information provided and our understanding of the project and its APE, the
Duwamish Tribe recommends an IDP (inadvertent discovery plan) for this restoration project, especially
if excavation cuts below the (gravel) fill into alluvium. This is in an area the Duwamish Tribe considers
culturally significant and has a moderate probability to have unknown archaeological deposits.
The project location is within approximately 2 ½ miles of two Duwamish places names and adjacent to
May Creek. The DAHP WISAARD predictive model indicates that a survey is recommended with a
moderate risk for encountering cultural resources.
We request that if any archaeological work or monitoring is performed, we would like notification.
Cultural and archaeological resources are non-renewable and are best discovered prior to ground
disturbance. The Tribe would also like the opportunity to be present if or when an archaeologist is on
site.
In addition, the Tribe strongly recommends that only native vegetation be used for any proposed
landscaping. We support that the City of Renton adheres to its wetland and stream buffer ordinances to
enhance and maintain fish habitat, native avian life and native pollinators as well as to mitigate seasonal
urban flooding. May Creek is an important cultural and environmental resource to the Duwamish Tribe.
Thank you,
Nancy A Sackman
