RENTON
GENERAL NOTES
1. ALL WORK SHALL CONFORM TO THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS FOR
CITY OF RENTON. A COPY OF THESE DOCUMENTS SHALL BE ON SITE DURING CONSTRUCTION.
2. A COPY OF THE APPROVED PLANS MUST BE ON SITE WHENEVER CONSTRUCTION IS IN PROGRESS.
3. ERRORS AND OMISSIONS ON THE PERMITTED PLANS MUST BE CORRECTED BY THE ENGINEER AND
APPROVED BY THE CITY OF RENTON.
4. ALL PERMITS REQUIRED FOR WORK WITHIN THE PUBLIC RIGHT OF WAY MUST BE OBTAINED BY THE
CONTRACTOR PRIOR TO THE START OF CONSTRUCTION.
5. PRIOR TO THE START OF CONSTRUCTION WITHIN THE RIGHT OF WAY, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL
SCHEDULE AND ATTEND A PRECONSTRUCTION MEETING WITH THE CITY OF RENTON. THE OWNER,
RECORD ENGINEER, CONTRACTOR AND DESIGNATED SUBCONTRACTORS SHALL BE PRESENT AT THE
PRECONSTRUCTION MEETING.
6. EXISTING PAVED SURFACES INCLUDING ROADWAYS, SIDEWALKS, AND CURBS THAT ARE DAMAGED BY
NEW CONSTRUCTION SHALL BE REPAIRED AS REQUIRED BY CITY OF RENTON AND THEIR INSPECTORS.
7. ALL DAMAGE TO CITY INFRASTRUCTURE CAUSED BY THE CONSTRUCTION SHALL BE REPAIRED AS
REQUIRED BY THE CITY OF RENTON.
8. THE APPROVED PLANS SHOW THE APPROXIMATE AREA OF PAVEMENT RESTORATION BASED ON THE
DEPTH OF UTILITY CUTS AND/OR THE AREA OF CURB AND/OR PAVEMENT TO BE REMOVED AND
REPLACED. THE ACTUAL LIMITS OF THE PAVEMENT RESTORATION SHALL BE DETERMINED IN THE FIELD
BY THE CITY OF RENTON INSPECTORS PRIOR TO THE PAVEMENT RESTORATION.
9. SURVEYING AND STAKING OF ALL IMPROVEMENTS IN THE PUBLIC RIGHT OF WAY SHALL BE COMPLETED
PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION. SURVEY CUT SHEETS MUST BE COORDINATED WITH CITY OF RENTON
INSPECTORS AT LEAST 5 DAYS PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION.
10. IF AN EXISTING CURB IS TO BE REMOVED AND REPLACED IN THE SAME LOCATION THE CONTRACTOR
SHALL PROVIDE THE CITY OF RENTON INSPECTOR A PLAN WITH EXISTING FLOW LINE AND TOP OF CURB
ELEVATIONS IDENTIFIED. PERMITTEE TO STAKE THE LOCATION OF THE EXISTING CURB PRIOR TO
DEMOLITION.
11. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REFERENCING AND REPLACING ALL MONUMENTS THAT
MAY BE DISTURBED, DESTROYED OR REMOVED BY THE PROJECT AND SHALL FILE AN APPLICATION FOR
PERMIT TO REMOVE OR DESTROY A SURVEY MONUMENT WITH THE WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT
OF NATURAL RESOURCES, PURSUANT TO RCW 58.24.040(8).
12. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL SUBMIT ALL APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS AS REQUIRED PER THE CITY OF RENTON
DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION. A MATERIAL
SOURCE FORM FOR ALL MATERIALS TO BE PLACED IN THE RIGHT OF WAY AND MIX DESIGNS FOR ALL
ASPHALT, CONCRETE AND AGGREGATES TO BE PLACED IN THE RIGHT OF WAY MUST BE SUBMITTED TO
THE CITY OF RENTON FOR REVIEW AND APPROVAL PRIOR TO BEGINNING CONSTRUCTION.
13. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL NOTIFY THE RENTON REGIONAL FIRE AUTHORITY AT LEAST TWENTY-FOUR (24)
HOURS IN ADVANCE OF ALL WATER SERVICE INTERRUPTIONS, HYDRANT SHUTOFFS, AND STREET
CLOSURES OR OTHER ACCESS BLOCKAGE. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL ALSO NOTIFY THE FIRE DISTRICT OF
ALL NEW, RELOCATED, OR ELIMINATED HYDRANTS RESULTING FROM THIS WORK.
14. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL LOCATE AND PROTECT ALL CASTINGS AND UTILITIES DURING CONSTRUCTION.
15. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL CONTACT THE UNDERGROUND UTILITIES LOCATOR SERVICE (811) AT LEAST 48
HOURS PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION.
16. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL CONTACT A PRIVATE UTILITY LOCATOR FOR ALL ON -SITE WORK ON THE PROJECT
AND ADJACENT PRIVATE PROPERTIES, AT LEAST 48 HOURS PRIOR TO CONSTRUCTION.
17. IT IS THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR TO VERIFY THE ACCURACY OF ALL UTILITY
LOCATIONS SHOWN AND TO FURTHER DISCOVER AND AVOID ANY OTHER UTILITIES NOT SHOWN WHICH
MAY BE AFFECTED BY THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS PLAN. THIS MAY INCLUDE, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO,
POTHOLE EXCAVATION AND OTHER MEANS AND METHODS.
18. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL ADJUST ALL EXISTING AND PROPOSED MANHOLE RIMS, DRAINAGE STRUCTURE
LIDS, VALVE BOXES, AND UTILITY ACCESS STRUCTURES TO FINISH GRADE WITHIN AREAS AFFECTED BY
THE PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS. THIS INCLUDES AS REQUIRED DURING PHASING TO ACCOMMODATE
INTERIM AND FINAL GRADING
19. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE FOR ALL TESTING AS REQUIRED BY THE CITY OF RENTON INSPECTOR.
20. BACKFILL MATERIAL USED IN PUBLIC RIGHT-OF-WAY SHALL MEET STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS AND
SHALL BE APPROVED BY THE CITY OF RENTON.
21. INSPECTION AND ACCEPTANCE OF ALL WORK IN THE PUBLIC RIGHT-OF-WAY SHALL BE DONE BY
REPRESENTATIVES OF CITY OF RENTON. IT SHALL BE THE CONTRACTORS RESPONSIBILITY TO
COORDINATE AND SCHEDULE APPROPRIATE INSPECTIONS ALLOWING FOR PROPER ADVANCE NOTICE.
THE CITY OF RENTON INSPECTOR MAY REQUIRE REMOVAL AND RECONSTRUCTION OF ANY ITEMS PLACED
IN THE RIGHT OF WAY THAT DO NOT MEET COUNTY STANDARDS OR THAT WERE CONSTRUCTED WITHOUT
APPROPRIATE INSPECTIONS.

ADA AND SAFETY UPGRADES
22. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROVIDE AND MAINTAIN TEMPORARY EROSION CONTROL AND SEDIMENTATION
COLLECTION FACILITIES TO ENSURE THAT SEDIMENT -LADEN WATER DOES NOT ENTER THE NATURAL OR
PUBLIC DRAINAGE SYSTEM. AS CONSTRUCTION PROGRESSES AND UNEXPECTED (SEASONAL)
CONDITIONS DICTATE, ADDITIONAL CONTROL FACILITIES MAY BE REQUIRED. DURING THE COURSE OF
CONSTRUCTION IT SHALL BE THE OBLIGATION AND RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR TO ADDRESS
ANY NEW CONDITIONS THAT MAY BE CREATED BY THE CONTRACTORS ACTIVITIES AND TO PROVIDE
ADDITIONAL FACILITIES THAT MAY BE NEEDED TO PROTECT ADJACENT PROPERTIES.
23. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL KEEP ALL PAVED SURFACES IN THE RIGHT OF WAY CLEAN BY SWEEPING. USE
VACUUM TYPE SWEEPER
24. CARE SHALL BE EXERCISED WHEN EXCAVATING NEAR EXISTING CHARGED WATER MAINS.
25. ALL UTILITY CROSSINGS NOTED AS "ASSUMED" ARE UNKNOWN DURING DESIGN. THE UNKNOWN
ELEVATIONS AND LOCATIONS MUST BE VERIFIED PRIOR TO ANY UTILITY CONSTRUCTION. ELEVATIONS
THAT DIFFER FROM ASSUMED ELEVATION SHALL BE FORWARDED TO THE CIVIL ENGINEER FOR REVIEW.
PROJECT NOTES
1. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL TAKE REASONABLE PRECAUTIONS AND EXERCISE SOUND ENGINEERING AND
CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES IN CONDUCTING THE WORK. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PROTECT EXISTING
PUBLIC AND PRIVATE UTILITIES FROM DAMAGE DURING CONSTRUCTION. IF EXISTING UTILITIES ARE
DAMAGED, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL IMMEDIATELY NOTIFY THE UTILITY PURVEYOR, OWNER AND THE
ENGINEER. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL RESTORE THE UTILITY TO ITS EXISTING CONDITION. (WSDOT SEC.
1-07.17 APWA SUPPLEMENT). THE CONTRACTOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MEANS AND THE METHODS
OF CONSTRUCTION FOR WORK SHOWN ON THESE PLANS.
2. ALL EXCAVATION, TRENCHING, SUBGRADE PREPARATION, FILL PLACEMENT, AND ALL SOIL WORK IN
GENERAL SHALL BE CONDUCTED IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE CITY OF RENTON STANDARDS.
3. CONTRACTOR SHALL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR HIRING A PROFESSIONAL LAND SURVEYOR TO REFERENCE
EXISTING MONUMENTS ON OR ADJOINING ESTABLISHED SAID POINTS AT PROJECT COMPLETION. THIS
REESTABLISHMENT SHALL BE DOCUMENTED BY RECORD OF SURVEY PREVIOUS TO DEMOLITION OR
CONSTRUCTION AND TO RECORNER RECORD AS DESCRIBED IN W.A.C. 332-120.
4. CONTRACTOR SHALL MAINTAIN A 5 FOOT MINIMUM HORIZONTAL CLEARANCE FROM THE WATER MAIN
AND OTHER UTILITIES (i.e. GAS, CABLE, POWER, ETC.). IF SAID CLEARANCE CANNOT BE MAINTAINED,
CONTACT ENGINEER FOR APPROVAL AND RECORD EXACT MEASUREMENTS OF THE UTILITY LINES ON THE
AS -BUILT DRAWINGS. A 10 FOOT MINIMUM HORIZONTAL CLEARANCE MUST BE MAINTAINED BETWEEN
WATER MAIN AND SANITARY SEWER.
5. SCHEDULE WITH CITY AND OWNER (96 HOURS MINIMUM NOTICE FOR WATER MAIN SHUT DOWN ON THE
SCHOOL SITE). INSTALL CITY STANDARD TESTING CONNECTION ON NEW WATER MAIN FOLLOWING
COMPLETION OF NEW WATER SYSTEM CONSTRUCTION, TESTING, AND ACCEPTANCE BY THE CITY,
REMOVE TESTING CONNECTION AND INSTALL SEGMENT OF DI PIPE, LENGTH TO SUIT, WITH TWO LONG
PATTERN SLEEVES. INSTALLATION AND CONNECTION TO EXISTING WATER SYSTEM SHALL BE WITH 100%
CITY INSPECTION.
6. UNDERGROUND UTILITIES ARE SHOWN IN THE APPROXIMATE LOCATION. THERE IS NOT A GUARANTEE
THAT ALL UTILITY LINES ARE SHOWN OR THAT THE LOCATION, SIZE, AND MATERIAL IS ACCURATE. THE
CONTRACTOR SHALL UNCOVER ALL INDICATED PIPING WHERE CROSSINGS, INTERFERENCE'S OR
CONNECTIONS OCCUR PRIOR TO TRENCHING OR EXCAVATION FOR ANY PIPE OR STRUCTURES, TO
DETERMINE ACTUAL LOCATIONS, SIZE AND MATERIAL. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL MAKE THE APPROPRIATE
PROVISION FOR PROTECTION OF SAID FACILITIES. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL NOTIFY ONE CALL AT 811
AND ARRANGE FOR PUBLIC AND PRIVATE FIELD LOCATION OF EXISTING FACILITIES BEFORE
CONSTRUCTION.
7. SCHEDULE WITH CITY (48 HOURS MINIMUM NOTICE) FOR WATER METER SHUTOFF AND TO RETIRE
METERS.

4. VERIFY VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL LOCATIONS OF ALL EXISTING UNDERGROUND UTILITIES. CONTACT
ALL UTILITY COMPANIES OR PROVIDERS THAT MAY BE AFFECTED BY THE PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION.
CALL 811 AND UTILIZE PRIVATE LOCATING COMPANY ALONG THE ENTIRE WORK AREA.
5. PROVIDE CATCH BASIN PROTECTION AND OTHER APPROPRIATE TESC MEASURES, INCLUDING STRAW
WATTLES, ETC. COORDINATE WITH CITY OF RENTON INSPECTOR.
6. BACKFILL AND COMPACT TRENCH. PATCH AND RESTORE SITE PER PLANS
7. INSTALL ALL NEW PAVING, LANDSCAPING AND SITE STABILIZATION.
8. CONTACT DESIGN ENGINEER AND COUNTY SO THEY CAN PUNCH LIST THE SITE. ADDRESS PUNCH LIST

EROSION AND SEDIMENTATION CONTROL NOTES
1. BEFORE ANY CONSTRUCTION OR DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITY OCCURS, A PRE -CONSTRUCTION MEETING
SHALL BE HELD AMONG THE CITY OF RENTON, HEREBY REFERRED TO AS THE CITY, THE APPLICANT, AND
THE APPLICANT'S CONTRACTOR.
2. THE APPLICANT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR OBTAINING THE WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF ECOLOGY
(ECOLOGY) CONSTRUCTION STORMWATER GENERAL PERMIT, IF IT IS REQUIRED FOR THE PROJECT. THE
APPLICANT SHALL PROVIDE THE CITY COPIES OF ALL MONITORING REPORTS PROVIDED TO ECOLOGY
ASSOCIATED WITH THE CONSTRUCTION STORMWATER GENERAL PERMIT.
3. THE ESC PLAN SET SHALL INCLUDE AN ESC CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE DETAILING THE ORDERED STEPS
THAT SHALL BE FOLLOWED FROM CONSTRUCTION COMMENCEMENT TO POST -PROJECT CLEANUP IN
ORDER TO FULFILL PROJECT ESC REQUIREMENTS.
4. THE BOUNDARIES OF THE CLEARING LIMITS, SENSITIVE AREAS AND THEIR BUFFERS, AND AREAS OF
VEGETATION PRESERVATION AND TREE RETENTION AS PRESCRIBED ON THE PLAN(S) SHALL BE CLEARLY
DELINEATED BY FENCING AND PROTECTED IN THE FIELD IN ACCORDANCE WITH APPENDIX D OF THE CITY
OF RENTON SURFACE WATER DESIGN MANUAL (RENTON SWDM) PRIOR TO THE START OF
CONSTRUCTION. DURING THE CONSTRUCTION PERIOD, NO DISTURBANCE BEYOND THE CLEARING LIMITS
SHALL BE PERMITTED. THE CLEARING LIMITS SHALL BE MAINTAINED BY THE APPLICANT/ESC
SUPERVISOR FOR THE DURATION OF CONSTRUCTION.
5. STABILIZED CONSTRUCTION ENTRANCES SHALL BE INSTALLE D AT THE BEGINNING OF CONSTRUCTION
AND MAINTAINED FOR THE DURATION OF THE PROJECT. ADDITIONAL MEASURES, SUCH AS CONSTRUCTED
WHEEL WASH SYSTEMS OR WASH PADS, MAY BE REQUIRED TO ENSURE THAT ALL PAVED AREAS ARE
KEPT CLEAN AND TRACK -OUT TO ROAD RIGHT OF WAY DOES NOT OCCUR FOR THE DURATION OF THE
PROJECT. IF SEDIMENT IS TRACKED OFFSITE, PUBLIC ROADS SHALL BE CLEANED THOROUGHLY AT THE
END OF EACH DAY, OR MORE FREQUENTLY DURING WET WEATHER, AS NECESSARY TO PREVENT
SEDIMENT FROM ENTERING WATERS OF THE STATE.

16. BEFORE COMMENCEMENT OF ANY CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY, CATCH BASIN INSERTS PER THE CITY
STANDARD PLAN 216.30 SHALL BE PROVIDED FOR ALL STORM DRAIN INLETS DOWNSLOPE AND WITHIN
500 FEET OF A DISTURBED OR CONSTRUCTION AREA, UNLESS THE RUNOFF THAT ENTERS THE INLET WILL
BE CONVEYED TO A SEDIMENT POND OR TRAP. ALL CATCH BASIN INSERTS SHALL BE PERIODICALLY
INSPECTED AND REPLACED AS NECESSARY TO ENSURE FULLY FUNCTIONING CONDITION.
17. AT NO TIME SHALL SEDIMENT ACCUMULATION EXCEED 2/3 OF THE CAPACITY OF THE CATCH BASIN SUMP.
ALL CATCH BASINS AND CONVEYANCE LINES SHALL BE CLEANED PRIOR TO PAVING. THE CLEANING
OPERATION SHALL NOT FLUSH SEDIMENT -LADEN WATER INTO THE DOWNSTREAM SYSTEM.
18. ANY PERMANENT STORMWATER FACILITY LOCATION USED AS A TEMPORARY SETTLING BASIN SHALL BE
MODIFIED WITH THE NECESSARY ESC BMPS AND SHALL PROVIDE ADEQUATE STORAGE CAPACITY. IF THE
TEMPORARY FACILITY IS TO ULTIMATELY FUNCTION AS AN INFILTRATION SYSTEM IN ITS PERMANENT
STATE, THE TEMPORARY FACILITY SHALL BE ROUGH GRADED SO THAT THE BOTTOM AND SIDES ARE AT
LEAST THREE FEET ABOVE THE FINAL GRADE OF THE PERMANENT FACILITY.
19. AREAS DESIGNATED ON THE PLAN(S) CONTAINING EXISTING STORMWATER FACILITIES OR ON -SITE BMPS
(AMENDED SOILS, BIORETENT ION, PERMEABLE PAVEMENT, ETC.) SHALL BE CLEARLY FENCED AND
PROTECTED USING ESC BMPS TO AVOID SEDIMENTATION AND COMPACTION DURING CONSTRUCTION.
20. PRIOR TO THE BEGINNING OF THE WET SEASON (OCTOBER 1ST), ALL DISTURBED AREAS SHALL BE
INSPECTED TO IDENTIFY WHICH ONES SHALL BE SODDED OR SEEDED IN PREPARATION FOR THE WINTER
RAINS. DISTURBED AREAS SHALL BE SODDED OR SEEDED WITHIN ONE WEEK OF THE BEGINNING OF THE

ON LOOSE SOILS, STEEP SLOPES, AND DURING HIGH RAINFALL EVENTS, THE TRENCHES SHOULD BE DUG TO A DEPTH OF 5 TO 7 INCHES, OR 1/2 TO 2/3 OF THE

2. INLET PROTECTION SHALL BE USED TO PROTECT THE DRAINAGE SYSTEM.
2.4. INSTALL THE WATTLES SNUGLY INTO THE TRENCHES AND ABUT TIGHTLY END TO END. DO NOT OVERLAP THE ENDS.
2.5. INSTALL STAKES AT EACH END OF THE WATTLE, AND AT 4 FOOT CENTERS ALONG THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE WATTLE.
3. THE CONTRIBUTING DRAINAGE AREA MUST NOT BE LARGER THAN ONE ACRE.
2.6. IF REQUIRED, INSTALL PILOT HOLES FOR THE STAKES USING A STRAIGHT BAR TO DRIVE HOLES THROUGH THE WATTLE AND INTO THE SOIL.
2.7. AT A MINIMUM, WOODEN STAKES SHOULD BE APPROXIMATELY 3/4 X 3/4 X 24 INCHES. WILLOW CUTTINGS OR 318-INCH REBAR CAN ALSO BE USED FOR STAKES.
4. SIZE THE BELOW INLET GRATE DEVICE (BIGD) FOR THE STORMWATER STRUCTURE IT WILL SERVICE.
2.8. STAKES SHOULD BE DRIVEN THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THE WATTLE, LEAVING 2 TO 3 INCHES OF THE STAKE PROTRUDING ABOVE THE WATTLE.
5. THE BIGD SHALL HAVE A BUILT-IN HIGH -FLOW RELIEF SYSTEM (OVERFLOW BYPASS).
3. MAINTENANCE STANDARDS
3.1. INSPECT WATTLES PRIOR TO FORECASTED RAIN, DAILY DURING EXTENDED RAIN EVENTS, AFTER RAIN EVENTS, WEEKLY DURING THE WET SEASON, AND AT
6. THE RETRIEVAL SYSTEM MUST ALLOW REMOVAL OF THE BIGD WITHOUT SPILLING THE COLLECTED MATERIAL.

3.3. REMOVE SEDIMENT ACCUMULATIONS WHEN EXCEEDING 1/2 THE HEIGHT BETWEEN THE TOP OF THE WATTLE AND THE GROUND SURFACE.
8. ANY SEDIMENT IN THE CATCH BASIN INSERT SHALL BE REMOVED WHEN THE SEDIMENT HAS FILLED ONE-THIRD OF THE AVAILABLE
STORAGE. THE FILTER MEDIA FOR THE INSERT SHALL BE CLEANED OR REPLACED AT LEAST MONTHLY.
