NARRATIVE
On 06/01/2023 at approximately 0538 hours I was dispatched to an unknown injury Accident at the
intersection of Bronson Way N and Factory Ave N, within the City of Renton, County of King, State of
Washington. The involved vehicles were reported to have pulled into to a parking lot to the northwest
of this location.
The following was recorded on my department issued body camera. Statements have been
summarized for clarity, see my full body camera footage for further details.
The following subjects/vehicles were involved in this incident:
Unit# 1
2017 Kia Sorento (WA Plate BZJ 1712)
Driver: Kelly A. Simmons (08/01/1965) -identified by her WADOL.
Unit# 2
2019 Dodge Ram 1500
Driver: Shery L. Toland (06/24/1977) -identified by her WADOL.
Upon arrival I observed front bumper damage to the Sorento and damage to the right side of the
Ram. Both drivers declined aid.
I spoke with Toland and asked her to describe what had occurred. She stated that she was heading
westbound in the #2 lane on Bronson Way N, approaching the intersection at Factory Ave N. As she
approached the intersection, she saw Unit#1 (U-1) stopped on at the intersection for a red light.
According to Toland, U-1 was facing westbound, and was partially in the #2 lane. Toland stated that
she attempted to stay in the #2 lane and go around U-1. When the light changed to green, the
vehicles collided.
I next spoke with Simmons and asked her to describe what had occurred. She stated that she was
heading westbound on Bronson Way N in the #1 lane and had stopped for a red light at the
intersection of Factory Ave N. Simmons said that she knew there was a lane closure ahead, so she
started to get over. When the light turned green, she began to accelerate, when her vehicle collided
with Unit#2.
Officers Note: There is a lane closure and bypass route at the intersection of Bronson Way N and
Park Ave N. This road closure is approximately 2 city blocks to the west of the occurred incident.
Based on the description of the incident from both involved parties, U-1 crossed the marked lane
divider line from lane #1 to lane #2 at the stoplight. U-2 attempted to go around U-1, rather than wait
safely behind the vehicle until it was clear to pass. I determined that both driver's actions contributed
to the collision.
I used my Officer discretion, and I did not cite either driver. I spoke with Simmons about maintaining
proper lane travel until it was safe to change lanes. 1 also spoke with Toland about not passing until it
was safe to do so, and being patient with other drivers.
U-1 sustained moderate damage to the front bumper, which was partially removed from the vehicle
during the collision. Simmons reported no injuries.
U-2 sustained minor damage to the right side of the vehicle. Toland reported no injuries.
