Approximately 80% of the work will take place within the 200 foot shoreline setback. The existing sidewalk has been damaged by root heave by three existing mature trees. As part of the sidewalk improvement, the size of the cutouts for the three trees will be increased significantly thereby improving the health of the trees. At the same time, the slope and flow of the street gutter will be improved and the existing catch basin upgraded. Elements of the sidewalk improvement include: • All trees are being preserved. • All parking places are being preserved (six spaces will be converted to compact parking from regular stalls). Previously, of the 72 total parking spaces, only one was a compact space. Now there will be seven compact spaces. • The two existing sidewalk wheelchair ramps will be re-created in the same locations. • Due to the increased size of the tree cutouts, the total impervious surface area will actually decrease by 72 ft. 2 • Water drainage will be improved due to the new street gutter and curbs and the replacement of an existing catch basin with a new larger one. • The bus shelter will be removed, carefully preserved, and then reinstalled after pouring the concrete. It will be supplied with Metro's next-generation of schedule signage. The basis for the exemption request is that virtually all the work will be a replacement of existing features. The use of the site will remain the same. The proposed work will actually improve safety, drainage, and landscaping.
