Kelley& Dividend Dr. Peachtree City Ga. 2/2/93 M . A . INDUSTRIES , INC . Quality Products Through Creative Research EXPLANATORY NOTE ABOUT ASTM D4101-95b FOR POLYPROPYLENE IN REGARDS TO MANHOLE STEPS Plastics are like any other material, in that there are thousands of formulations available. And, as with concrete or metals, a correct and consistent grade of material for an application must be used. Manhole steps are no exception. ASTM D4101-95b does not specify particular materials. This standard enables one to qualify and describe a material. Copolymer Polypropylene is the best material to use in the manufacture of manhole steps. It has the necessary corrosion resistance to survive the manhole environment. However, manhole steps must exhibit strengths at both low and high temperatures. Pullout force, vertical load, and impact crack resistance are extremely important design criteria. These parameters dictate that the copolymer polypropylene be specifically formulated to have a blend of the proper hardness and tensile strength while remaining ductile. For example, a softer, more ductile material may increase the impact crack resistance in sever cold but would increase the risk of pullout during hot summer temperatures. Conversely, harder(brittle)polypropylene would increase pullout and load capabilities at the expense of cold weather impact crack resistance. M.A. Industries, Inc. has manufactured over 25 million steel reinforced copolymer polypropy- lene manhole steps since 1969. We were first to do so. Twenty-seven years of experience has taught us which material is correct for this application. The copolymer polypropylene we use conforms to ASTM D4101-95b PP0344B33534Z02. The one-half inch deformed steel reinforc- ing rod conforms to ASTM A-615 Grade 60. The M.A. steps are an engineered product. The copolymer polypropylene of which the M.A. manhole steps are made is specifically formulated for this application. When correctly installed, the M.A. steps will withstand an impact of 70 foot-pounds at 6°F., have pullout strengths above 1500 pounds and support loads in excess of 800 pounds—with less than one-half inch perma- nent deflection (ASTM C 478-94). D4101-92b is a means to classify Propylene. See table PP. Hence, that is where the PP comes from in PP0344B3354Z02. (1) The 0344 of PP0344B33534Z02 denotes copolymer polypropylene in table PP. (2) The `B" indicated you go to chart B. The first number is 3 (PP0344B33534Z02) which is for tensile strength (as per ASTM D638) in MA (Meg Pascal), the 3 indicates column 3 which shows a minimum value of 500 MA or 2174 PSI. (3) The second 3 (PP0344B33534Z02) is for modulus of elasticity as per ASTM D790.Again, this tells us to go to column 3 which shows a minimum value of 500 MA or 72,490 PSI. (4) The third number is 5 (PP0344B33534Z02). This column is for Izod impact strength as per ASTM D256. This is performed on a test specimen hit by a pen- dulum and the resulting torque is recorded. In our case it is a minimum of 200 Joules per meter or 5.5 ft lbs./inch. (5) The fourth number is 3 (PP0344B33534Z02). This is for deflection temperature at which a test specimen will deflect 5% when subjected to a 455kPa load or 66 PSI as per ASTM D648. Our value is 70, which is 70°C. (6) The fifth number is 4 (PP0344B33534Z02) which is flow rate of the material in grams per 10 minutes. Again, this is on a particular test specimen at 230'C. while being subjected to a 2.16 kilogram weight as per ASTM D1238. (7) The last three alphanumeric characters of PP0344B33534Z02 are for special coloring. The coloring we use contains a minimum of.75% carbon black. Plastics are organic. Plastics exposed to sunlight need protection. Carbon Black absorbs the free radicals created from the attack and stops a chain reaction of molecular breakdown. The complete identification of the polypropylene such as ASTM D4104-95b PP0344B33534Z02 is necessary. Structures are built with specific and consistent materials. Manhole steps should meet the same considerations by using only correct and consistent materials which are identified. P.O. It does not specify if it is a homopolymer of copolymer. No specifics are given. Correct use of D4101 requires clas- sification such as PP0344B33534Z02. There are hundreds of polypropylenes, many area not suited to be manhole step material. Manhole steps whose contents are not properly identified should not be used. A manhole step directly supports human life. This fact demands that any manhole step which is specified and used should only be made of materials and manufacturing procedures which insure superior quality and consistency. You can obtain that by specifying the following: I (1) Manhole steps shall conform to ASTM C-478-94 and shall be steel reinforced copolymer polypropylene with the materials conforming to the following: (a) the deformed steel reinforcing bar shall be 1/2 inch conforming to ASTM A-615 Grade 60. i (b) the copolymer polypropylene shall conform to ASTM D4101-92b PP0344B33534Z02. Simplicity, sturdiness and water-tightness of the system were brought about, not by chance but by design.Taking advantage of a background of 100 years experience with pipe and pipe connecting systems, U.S.Pipe made a thorough study of existing joining systems and requirements of pipe users. The results of this study showed the need for a simple, economical and reliable method of assembling pipe. With the objective of developing such a system,a number of new designs were devised. Several of the most promising were tested and the assembly which possessed the most outstandingly desirable characteristics became TYTON JOINT Pipe. After selection of the system,TYTON JOINT Pipe were subjected to further rigid tests designed to simulate extreme installation and service conditions which might be encountered in the field. It was only after these tests proved completely satisfactory and were confirmed by field installations that the decision was made to market TYTON JOINT Pipe in 1955.Convincing proof of its wide acceptance is shown by the fact that more than 95%of the pipe now sold by this company is MON JOINT Pipe. The TYTON®Gaskets circular rubber gasket which has a modified bulb shape in cross section—is the only accessory.Composition and dimensions of the gasket have been carefully engineered to ensure a water-tight and lasting seal.Gaskets of special elastomers may be ordered for special applications. The gasket contour and bell socket contour ensure that the gasket will remain seated during proper assembly of the pipe. The plain end of the pipe is furnished beveled to ease assembly. Because MON JOINT Pipe assembles so easily, those not experienced with it may get the impression that the system is not water-tight. But years of successful experience prove it to be water-tight regardless of ease of assembly. Hydrostatic tests have shown that the system will withstand pressures far in excess of rated pressures. The contractor is requesting to use this material as a substitute for hot mix for permanent utility trench patches. They want to use it in lieu of using a cold mix temporary patch, which would then be removed and replaced with a permanent hot mix patch. The information claims that it can be used as a permanent utility patch material. Although these roads will receive a full overlay, it will not occur until next summer. This patch will need to hold up to regular traffic use for approximately 10 months. The construction contract does provide a one-year warranty period that would require the contractor to repair any failures. Since this is a King County Road,I believe the decision to allow the use of this product should be yours. Please let me know if this is an approved substitute for the final hot mix patch. The contractor plans to start construction on July 9th,2001. I can be reached at 425-430-7279. Box 370 Sumner, WA 98390 SUBJECT: 80th AVENUE SOUTH SANITARY SEWER EXTENSION: MATERIAL SUBMITTAL REVIEW Dear Wally: Enclosed please find review sheets for the C900 PVC sewer pipe, fire hydrant, and Storz adapter material submittals. I forwarded the specifications for "EZ Street" cold asphalt patch to King County's Utility Inspection Unit for review. These are King County roads and, therefore, they must approve all road restoration materials. King County has denied the request to use "EZ-Street" as a permanent patch material. All utility trench patching shall conform to the project specifications.
