MEMORANDUM
DATE: February 23, 1993
TO: Charles Ellingson - Pacific Ground Water Group
FROM: Daniel Carey 'Lr,/
SUBJECT: Spring Sampling Locations Near Maplewood Golf Course
Attached are three figures showing the spring sampling locations as you requested.
Site 1 A ditch between the golf course and wooded slope. Usually low water level and sluggish.
This may be more of a surface water collection point. There appears to be a underdrain that drains
into it. I found noticeable flow from the underdrain only once.
Site 2 A spring high up the hillside. This location has always had a good amount of flow. Location
with third most flow volume.
Site 3 Apparently a underdrain pipe at the edge of the forest and golf course. A moderate to low
amount of flow, occasionally too low to get a sample.
Site 4 Spring coming down a rock face. Usually free flowing, may receive flow from surface sources
on plateau above. Second most flow volume.
Site 5 Spring from plateau on south side of valley. Usually free flowing, most flow volume of all
locations.
Site 6 Wet area about 50 to 100 feet north of upper dam, under fallen log. Low, steady, flow.
Probably from a sand seam. Observed flow here when the stream on the west side, below the upper
dam, was dry.

CITY OF RENTON
MEMORANDUM
9
DATE: February 3, 1"1 /.
TO: Dave Christensen R F
IJ
FROM: Daniel Carey
SUBJECT: East Renton Interceptor
Sampling Locations And Observations
This memo documents the sampling locations and observations that I have made after starting
sampling on November 7, 1991. 1 noticed that some locations shown on the previous map made by
Kim Scattarella for the April 9, 1991 sampling did not seem consistent with the actual locations. In
addition, I may not be taking samples at the exact same locations as previously described, and have
added at least one new location.
The following location numbers correspond with the previously established numbers and are shown
on new maps (attached ).
Site 1; 11/7/91 Dave Jennings and I inspected the ditch south of the culvert under the maintenance
road. We did not observe any seeps coming out of the side of the ditch or notice any springs coming
into the ditch north of the road culvert. No sample was taken.
11/20 1 did not observe any seeps out of the side of the ditch. The sample was taken from flow in the
ditch. The ditch was full of fallen leaves, flow velocity was estimated at 1 inch per second (0.08 fps )
based on observations of floating material.
1/10/92 Same conditions as 11120, walked side of ditch pushing grass aside looking for seeps, no
sample taken.
1/24 Sample taken out of ditch.
1/28 Walked ditch and found possible spring 50+ feet north of road culvert, The spring is hidden
under grass on north west side of the bank, approx 1.5 to 2 feet above the bottom of ditch. Water was
flowing out of a 4 to 5-inch diameter hole, approximately 1/3 full. Felt in hole and only encountered
mud and pebbles. There is some black plastic underdrain pipe lying on the ground farther north along
the bank. It seems strange that the flow comes out of a roundish hole at this location, it may be
discharge from a buried pipe. If so, the pipe(s) could have been installed to intercept seeps and direct
them into the ditch to keep water off the golf course.

Page 2
1 walked the ditch farther to to north and found a area of semi-exposed soil that seemed to have some
water dripping from its surface. This may indicated a layer of more permeable soil. There was no area
of concentrated flow that a sample could be taken from.
Site 2; All samples taken from hillside spring in flow path about midway up the slope.
Site 3; 1 do not know where the previous samples were obtained. I explored the forest area
northwest of the golf tee for signs of springs on several sampling occasions. Although I walked
upslope for 200 to 300 feet, and across the slope, I could not find any running water or indications of
surface seeps.
11/7/91 No sampling location found.
11/20 Checked the ditch on the northwest side of the road. At a junction 100 to 150 feet southwest of
the golf tee there is a shallowly buried 6-inch concrete pipe coming from the northwest and a 4-inch
pipe coming from the northeast. Both pipes had water flowing in them, which continues through a
culvert and in a ditch to the southwest along the north side of the golf course. The 6-inch pipe may
drain the low area at the base of the forest to the northwest.
The 4-inch pipe may be an underdrain pipe that comes from the northeast along the junction of the
forest slope and golf course. There is a slight surface depression next to the road that probably marks
the location of the buried pipe. There was approximately 1 inch of water flowing very rapidly from the
4-inch pipe. The ground surface did not appear to be saturated or have noticable runoff so I thought it
may be possible that this system was installed to intercept a seep at the edge of the forest and
prevent it from flowing onto the golf course fairway.
1/10/92 , 1/24 , 1/28 All samples taken out of 4-inch pipe.
Site 4; All samples taken at the vertical cliff from the spring which contains the largest amount of
flow.
Site 5; A new home development has been under construction in this area. The stream is located
east of the new home at 15711 SE 157th St. The samples are taken 50 to 60 feet from the street,
beyond the back corner of the house lot. Construction has not disturbed this area. There appears to
be fallen tree limbs and brush in the stream further up.
Site 6; The site is located on the northwest side of Maplewood Creek, about 100 to 150 feet above
the upper dam.The site is about 30 to 40 feet west of the foot trail that runs along the top of the creek
bank. The area has a large amount of fallen timber and is wet and mucky at the lower end. The
sample was taken at the bottom of a slight slope, under a 12 to 18-inch diameter fallen tree that is
about 4 feet off the ground ( marked with orange tape). Flow is coming down the slope and appears
to come from or over a seam of clean, uniform, sand. The flow appears to originate about 30 feet
further up the slope in a wet and brushy area. I didn't think it was worthwhile to disturb the area in
order to find the exact source (lot of thorns).
The immediate area around the site appears to be a small bench with a soil face to the west. Above
that the woods slopes to the north and south. The area is not in a " V " shaped depression so the
source does not appear to be from surface water runoff. During the sampling on 1/24 and 1/28 the
flow from this site seemed about the same magnitude. In comparison, the creek coming from the

west side of the ravine, located between the sedimentation pond and upper dam, was flowing
moderately full on one occassion and visibly less during the other time.
This site should be evaluated as a new background location since it is located west of Maplewood
Creek. The subdivision on the plateau above it is supposedly sewered.

CITY OF RENTON
MEMORANDUM
DATE: April 3, 1991
TO: Dick Anderson
FROM: Randall Parson
STAFF CONTACT: Dave Jenningsf1d
SUBJECT: East Renton Interceptor/Water Quality Sampling
RH2 Engineering, consultants to the City of Renton on various projects to define and
provide information on the City's sole-source aquifer, have indicated that they suspect
that contaminated groundwater may be moving from developed areas on the
Maplewood plateau down to the Cedar River and into the City's designated sole-source
aquifer. This groundwater may be carrying contaminants from septic systems and has
the potential to seriously impact the water quality of the river and the City's drinking
water supply. If shown to be a significant water quality hazard, this may be an
important factor for the East Renton Sewer Extension project.
Groundwater, in the form of springs and seepage, has been observed breaking out of
the north wall along the Cedar River in several locations. Kim Scattarella and Dave
Jennings were guided by Jeff Clayton of RH2 Engineering to several locations where
this phenomena was observed. Jeff stressed that such occurrences are intermittent,
closely follow storm events, are not apparently the result of water table fluctuations,
and are observed at different levels on the exposed north valley wall.
This has several implications: (1) It suggests that rapid continuity exists through the
soil layers between the plateau and the point of break-out, implying that little capture
or treatment of the water is accomplished in the intervening soils; (2) that the water is
not stored as groundwater in the upper soil layers, but originates at the surface of the
plateau and serves to flush out the soils in between; (3) that most contaminants are
probably rinsed out of the soils in greater concentrations after building up in plateau
soils during annual dry periods; and (4) that flows from different elevations on the
valley wall (hence, different till layers) probably originate in different places on the
plateau and travel different paths and distances.
It is Jeff's recommendation that the City commence this program of sampling and
testing to determine the chemical and biological characteristics of the groundwater.
The goal of this program would be to determine if these springs constitute a hazard to
either the Cedar River or the aquifer.

The Storm and Wastewater Utility has, therefore, commenced a limited program to
characterize the water quality of the observed springs. This program will conduct
sampling at five locations as noted on the accompanying sketch. One control location
will be sampled to provide baseline information for study validation. A lab located in
Seattle has been chosen to perform the testing. Water quality samples will be
screened for fecal coliform bacteria, fecal strep bacteria, total phosphorous, nitrates,
nitrites, and chlorides. These components will be the most likely indicators of
contamination from septic tanks.
The testing costs will be $96.00 per sample. Three sets of samples will be taken at
each of the locations following three different storm events. At two sites three
different samples will be taken at springs emerging from different till layers. If sample
results indicate contamination, samples will be taken at least two more times. Follow
up sampling will also be performed in the fall following the first significant rainfall
event.
The total cost of this program, including staff time, lab costs, and administration is
estimated at $6,300. A cost estimate breakdown is attached.
We expect our first testing results in two weeks. If you have any other questions
regarding the sampling program, please check with Dave J.

CITY OF RENTON
MEMORANDUM
DATE: March 19, 1991
TO: Randall Parsons
FROM: Kim Scattarella
SUBJECT: POTENTIAL WATER SAMPLING SITES IN MAPLEWOOD HEIGHTS
Geoff Clayton from RH2 Engineering,Dave Jennings and I did a preliminary site investigation field survey
for water sampling sites last Friday afternoon. The location of tenative sites are shown on the enclosed
Thomas Bros. section maps. There will be a follow-up field trip to solidify the locations for subsurface
water sampling locations in the near future, possibly with Geoff Clayton.
The background information on each site is as follows:
Site 1) Location; Approximately 1/2 mile NE of the SR 169/Jones Rd. junction. The site is the
side of an exposed slope that drains from the easternmost portion of Maplewood Heights. Several active
springs were found in this location.
Site 2)Location; Next to house at 14441 141st Ave. SE,just south of SE 144th, to the end of the
Cul-de-Sac on 141st Ave. SE downslope from the eastern side of 141st Ave.SE. The site is an exposed
slope near the top of the hill overlain by glacial till, with an active spring. The best sampling location is in
the uppermost portion. The discharge should also be estimated from this location.
Site 3) Location; Across SR 169 from 14645 Renton-Maple Valley Road, and uphill (due North
from SR 169) . This site may not be feasible due to the difficult access, as well as being located on private
property. The springs in this area discharge from Maplewood Heights.
Site 4A) Location; Access on Maplewood Golf Course, upstream along Maplewood Creek to
where exposed slopes with existing springs are encountered. This area drains from the portion of
Maplewood Heights that is within the Renton City Limits.
Site 4B)Location; Access on Maplewood Golf Course, continuing up the fire access road to the
gate, then hiking up hill until existing springs are encountered.
Site 5) Location; The face of the slope that is due north from the Maplewood Retention/Silt
Pond. The area in which any springs originate from has City Sewer. There has been significant erosion in
portions of this exposed slope. This site has not been thoroughly investigated, and would serve as a control
site. Other alternative locations are being explored for control sampling sites.

EAST RENTON INTERCEPTOR GROUNDWATER/SPRING SAMPLING PROGRAM
The following locations were sampled on April 9, 1991,and will tenatively continue to be sampled;
Site 1;A location about 200'feet from the Maintenance Shed at Maplewood Golf Course,up the
gravel trail just above the gravel maintenance road. There is a drainage ditch with a spring that flows
out the side bank that can be sampled along with an artesian spring in the vicinity upslope from the
ditch.
Site 2;About 200'further up the gravel trail from Site 1. There is an exposed face of a hill about 150'
above the trail, with a spring that is able to be sampled.
Site 3;This site is located about 300'-400'above the lowland on the back side of Maplewood Golf
Course, after the gravel trail winds around to run west to east. There are some springs coming out of
the ground that merge into a creek a little further down the hill. Several springs were sampled with low
flow rates, and the creek may have to be sampled further downstream with drier conditions.
Site 4;At 14434 141st Ave.SE.,in Maplewood Heights. There is a ravine with several springs flowing
out of the side of a hill. These springs are relatively large coming out of gravel deposits.o, ",* s,d Q o F
Site S and SA ;Located at Summerfield II,which is just east of Aqua Barn, off SR 169. There is a steep
slope just in back of this plat, with several streams that migrate down off of the slope. The streams
originate from springs coming out of sandy soil, which show little concentrated flow. However, there
are numerous springs that form a sizable stream from 25-50'downslope from the springs(the top of
where a significant landslide recently occurred). The stream is sampled. The plat of Maple Ridge is
on top of this slope and is completely sewered. This is the control site, with samples taken at 2
locations.
