The purpose of the event was to offer 200 free nest boxes for the Violet-green Swallow to Renton residents living in the Talbot Hill area and to display information on migratory birds,"Green Gardening",and other interesting topics. Through the event the City was able to distribute about 110 of the nest boxes to residents in the Talbot Hill area. Another 40 nest boxes were given away to students of Talbot Hill Elementary. (Please put your boxes up uowlfyou already have one J Since we still have 50 nest boxes left from last year's give away,we are again offering free nest boxes to residents in the Talbot Hill area. For those who did not receive a nest box last year,please come to the 4th floor customer service counter at the Renton City Hall at 200 Mill Avenue South to pick up your free box. The boxes will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis,so don't wait too long if you are interested in having a box. Those who received a nest box last year may pick up yet another free nest box if there are still boxes available after April 15. Before coming to City Hall,it is suggested that you check on the availabil- ity of the boxes by contacting Scott Woodbury at 425-277-5547. The Talbot Hill area nest box distribution is an effort to provide integrated pest management in the City's mosquito abatement program(see the other side of this flyer for more information about the mosquito abatement program). By distributing the nest boxes,we hope to increase the population of Violet-green Swallows in your area. Violet-green Swallows consume about 6,000 insects in 1 day! Nesting Violet-green Swallows who are providing food for young swallows require an even larger insect intake. We were pleased to report that some of the boxes distributed last year were used for nesting and we hope for even greater use this year. The Violet-green Swallow has dark upper parts glossed with green and purple. It is pure white below with white rump patches which almost meet over the tail. Their preferred nesting sites are tree cavities but with the loss of natural habitat, there are very few natural cavities available to them. Fortunately,the Violet- green Swallow will use nest boxes! You can also help the swallows(and provide bird-watching enjoyment for yourself!)by placing short bits of cotton string or feathers from old pillows in the center of your lawn where they can safely snatch them off the grass to use as nesting materials. The program consists ofpthe application of insecticides to portions of the project area shown on the map below for which legal authorization to conduct the treatments had been received. The program area was selected prima- rily for the following reasons: o Many mosquitoes that appear in the Talbot Hill area are believed to breed in the large Panther Creek Wetland adjacent to and east of SR-167 and other wetland areas to the west of the treatment area. Fogging in the current treatment area is the first line of defense to limit the migration of mosquitoes from the wetlands to the Talbot Hill area. © Because of its proximity to the suspected �� 15 breeding areas, mosquito populations in the ,sth S brushy hillside within the treatment area are typically higher than in areas farther from the Panther Creek Wetland and other breeding sources.
