In addition, this significant AMERICAN development, a dependable, single gasket, push-on type joint meeting the requirements of AWWA C111, affords the customer lower joint cost and time-saving advantages in installation. It pro- vides exceptional strength and flexibility and has been widely accepted by engineers, con- tractors and utility officials since the 1950s. For added flexibility during construction, and for possible elimination of bends, a liberal 5° allowable deflection is standard in all sizes through 30”, offering 21” offset in a 20’ length of pipe. Liberal deflection can also be provided in larger diameter pipe with standard and Special Fastite Deflection Bells. The patented AMERICAN Fastite Joint embodies many advanced design features and is rated for a water working pressure of 350 psi. For specific conditions, ductile iron piping with this joint has been approved for much higher pressure conditions. The socket, which is scien- tifically designed with two gasket recesses and a dividing buttress, is manufactured to close toler- ances so that the gasket is self-centered, securely confined, and firmly compressed for a perma- nent, tight, trouble-free joint. The Fastite joint seal, bubble-tight under vacuum and external pressure, becomes even tighter with the appli- cation of internal pressure due to a specially designed wedging surface in the socket. Fastite Joint Assembly The bell opening is slightly tapered to provide easy entry of the pipe end; the flared socket design permits liberal joint deflection. The plain end of the pipe is tapered or rounded to facilitate entry into the bell and self-centering in the gasket. On pipe cut in the field, the plain end can be easily beveled and smoothed by the use of a portable grinding wheel or other suitable apparatus. Methods of cuttingductile iron pipe are described in Section 3. A stripe is painted on the plain end ofAMERICAN Fastite Joint Pipe to provide a visual means of checking the joint alignmentand to assure proper insertion. See page 2-10 for detailed assembly instructions. Fastite GasketThe Fastite Joint sealing component—a molded synthetic rubber ring gasket of twohardnesses, shaped to fit the configuration of the gasket socket—is manufactured per allrequirements of ANSI/AWWA C111/A21.11 and under AMERICAN’s own rigid specifica-tions, assuring closely controlled dimensional and hardness properties. The smaller end ofthe gasket is of harder rubber, approximately 85 durometer hardness, which provides astrong shoulder for self-centering on the gas- ket buttress, a permanent seal against coldflow, and protection from deterioration. The larger end of the gasket is of softer rubber, approximately 65 durometer hardness, provid- ing ease of assembly and positive sealing. Thedesign assures effective sealing at low or high pressures and in straight or deflected jointalignment. It also eliminates any concerns of infiltration or root intrusion, and assures posi-tive sealing against negative pressure, thus preventing gasket “pullout” should a vacuumbe created in the line. A taper on the inside of the gasket allowsthe entering pipe to locate and center on the hard section and reduces friction loads during AMERICAN Fastite®Joint Pipe For Water, Sewage or Other Liquids Submittal Package Page 3 2-7 subsequent assembly. The snug fit and the hard section of the gasket, in conjunction with the design of the buttress, act to restrain the gasket against dislodgment during assembly. Additional internal pressure results in increased tightness of the seal when pipe is either in straight alignment or deflected. Gaskets made of SBR (Styrene Butadiene Rubber) are standard. For information on gas- kets made of special types of rubber, for applications involving air or liquid tempera- tures in excess of 150°F, or for chemical, hydrocarbon or other special service applica- tions, and for installations in contaminated soils where permeation through gaskets might be a concern, consult AMERICAN for recom- mendations. See Table 2-1. Fastite Lubricant AMERICAN Fastite Joint Lubricant is a non-toxic water soluble material imparting nei- ther taste nor odor to the conveyed water and is ANSI/NSF 61 approved. The lubricant is suitable for use in hot or cold weather and will adhere to wet or dry pipe. AMERICAN Fastite Joint Pipe can be assembled when submerged, though for such installation, special AMERICAN underwater joint lubricant is recommended. See Table No. 2-5 for appropriate lubricant quantities. Fastite Joint Materials Standard joint materials include Fastite plain rubber gaskets and a sufficient supply of Fastite joint lubricant. Fastite pipes are most often readily joined with available excavating equipment; however, assembly tools can be supplied by AMERICAN on a loan basis with a nominal deposit which is refundable upon return of tools in good condition. Fittings AMERICAN Fastite or Flex-Ring fittings and AMERICAN Mechanical Joint Fittings are used with Fastite Joint pipe. See Sections 4 and 5. Coating and Lining AMERICAN Fastite Joint Pipe can be fur- nished asphaltic coated, cement lined, or with special coating or lining where required. See Section 11. Measure/determine the minimum (minor) diameter of the ends to be rounded. 2. Place the jack and the shaped blocks in line with the minor diameter as shown in the attached sketch using a sound 4"x4" spacer timber cut square to the required length to take up the space. 3. Apply a load carefully with the jack only until the “minimum diameter equals the maximum diameter,” or until the gland will easily slip over the end. No more jacking should be attempted or necessary - DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PERMANENTLY ROUND END. 4. After the joint is completely assem- bled and the bolts (if involved) are uniformly tightened to the required torque, carefully relax and remove the jack and timbers from the pipe. SHAPED BLOCK SHAPED BLOCK 4"x4" timber cut todesired length. Use anysuitable timber availablefrom dunnage on car, truck or other source. Standard Thickness Double Thickness Weights are based on the minimum lining thicknesses for minimum pressure classes of Fastite ductile iron pipe. Actual lengths and weights may differ from above. Linings may taper at the ends. AMERICAN recommends the use of standard thickness cement lining per AWWA C104 for all normal installations. This 64" Ductile Iron Fastite Joint water transmission main was furnished with stan- dard cement lining for continuing high flow performance. Submittal Package Page 16 2-7 subsequent assembly. They were previously designated standard thickness classes. AMERICAN can furnish any thickness in between these Special Thicknesses if deemed economical for major projects. Special classes are most appropriately used for some threaded, grooved, or ball and socket pipes or for extraordinary design conditions, and they are generally less available than standard pressure class pipe. For pressure rating and maximum depth of cover capabilities of Special Thickness Classes, check AMERICAN. These capabilities can be estimated by comparing metal thickness and capabilities of those of Pressure Classes in Table No. 3-11, or may be calculated by using the design formulas shown in AWWA C150. EPDM RUBBER-ENCAPSULATED DUCTILE IRON WEDGE ensures drop tight seal every time with low stem torque. LOWER O-RING SEAL seals lubrication chamber. FEATURES/BENEFITS/SPECIFICATIONS 2 The Series 2500 Ductile Iron 250 p.s.i.g. AWWA Resilient Wedge Gate Valve is designed for use in drinking water, sewage, and fire protection systems as well as irrigation and backflow control systems. Ductile Iron Construction The ductile iron body, bonnet, and wedge provide strength and a pressure rating that meets or exceeds the requirements of AWWA C515. Strength more than doubles that provided by cast gray iron designs, and the pressure rating is 250 p.s.i.g. All this strength and higher pressure rating is provided in a compact, lightweight, and easy-to-handle ductile iron valve. Fusion-Bonded Epoxy The Series 2500 valve is fully epoxy coated on the interior and the exterior. The fusion-bonded coating is applied prior to assembly so that even the bolt holes and body-to-bonnet flange surfaces are fully epoxy coated. Triple O-Ring Stem Seals This valve features triple O-Ring stem seals. Two O-Rings are located above, and one O-Ring is located below the thrust collar. The lower two O-Rings provide a permanently sealed lubrication chamber that will make the valve easier to operate over a longer period of time. The upper O-Ring ensures that sand, dirt, or grit cannot enter the valve to cause damage to the lower O-Rings. This is especially important for buried and sewage service applications. Thrust Washers Two thrust washers are used. One is located above, and one is located below the thrust collar. These thrust washers ensure easy operation at all times. No Flat Gaskets The body-to-bonnet and bonnet- to-bonnet cover seals are pressure- energized O-Rings. This eliminates the need for excessive bolt loading, which is required by designs that use flat gaskets. The O-Rings are reusable, which eliminates downtime during any needed repair. The Series 2500 Resilient Wedge Gate Valve is furnished in configurations that are Listed by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. and Approved by Factory Mutual Research Corp. When the wedge segment is engaged by the actuating bolt, the primary contact edges of each wedge segment lock onto the pipe wall. This action causes the primary contact edges to grip the pipe and effectively restrain all classifications of ductile iron pipe. ONE-LOK SLDE’s precision contoured wedges provide proper contact and support of the ductile iron pipe wall. Each wedge is manufactured with an elongated contour that evenly matches the outside circumference of each nominal diameter of ductile iron pipe. This elongated contour also eliminates the concern of damage to both the pipe wall and the interior cement mortar lining caused by point loading, even on the thinner pressure classes of ductile iron pipe. ONE-LOK SLDE’s wedge actuating bolt provides the installer with a visual torque indicator. The breakaway top ensures proper engagement of the wedge segment at the time of installation. Unlike other actuating bolts, the ONE-LOK SLDE is manufactured with a proprietary quality control system that ensures the breakaway tops will activate at the correct torque. The breakaway top is sized to match the same dimensions of the bolts and nuts used to assemble the mechanical joint fitting and follower gland, eliminating the need for special installation tools. Once engaged, the actuating bolt leaves a residual hex- head shank, allowing post-installation disassembly of the restrained joint, if necessary. ONE-LOK’s unique cam action allows the restraining wedges to “rock,” gripping the pipe wall more securely as thrust force increases. ONE-LOK’s cam action also accommodates deflection of the joint during installation, and also allows for subsidence, seismic or other forces after installation, up to the maximum allowed deflection. This also allows improved resistance to subsidence, seismic forces, and other movement within the maximum deflection limitations of the mechanical joint under applicable AWWA standards. Bolts are specified in ANSI B18.2.1 and nuts are specified in ANSI B18.2.2. Bolts and nuts of low-carbon steel conforming to ASTM A307 are specified in the Appendix of AWWA C110 and C115 for flanged pipe when rubber gaskets are used. Nuts of reg- ular or heavy hex design are used accord- ing to customer specifications. Also, per the Appendix of AWWA C110 and C115, high- strength bolts should not be used when a gray iron flange is involved in the connection. AMERICAN Toruseal® Flange Gasket The AMERICAN Toruseal® flange gasket is available for improved joint performance. It is vastly superior to co- ventional full-face or ring gaskets. Although recommended for all normal water and sewer service, it especially must be used in demanding services such as very large diam- eter flanged piping, specially designed long- span installations (i.e. spans involving 2 or 3 lengths of pipe) or with any underground flanges* that could be subjected to unde- sirable beam loading. Toruseal® gaskets are normally furnished of high-quality black, molded SBR rubber with required properties per ANSI/AWWA C111/A21.11. Standard Toruseal® SBR rubber gaskets are ANSI/NSF Standard 61 certified for contact with po- table water. Other type rubber is available on special order. AMERICAN Toruseal® gas- kets meet the description of “specially de- signed gaskets” shown in the appendices of AWWA C110, C111, and C115, and “special gaskets” shown in the body of AWWA C111. *As noted in the appendices of appropriate ANSI/AWWA standards, the use of flanged joints underground is generally not recommended because of the rigidity of the joint. Gaskets AMERICAN Toruseal® gaskets are rec- ommended for AWWA standard flanged joints in normal water and sewage service. The ANSI B16.21 standard specifies the in- side of 3”-12” non-metallic full-face and ring gaskets to be greater (the same as standard steel pipe outside diameters) than nominal. Any flat gaskets used for ductile iron flanged pipe must have “nominal” in- side diameters as shown in the appendix of ANSI/AWWA C115/A21.15, not the larger inside diameters per ANSI B16.21. The larger I.D. gaskets per ANSI B16.21 are not recommended by AMERICAN. Contact AMERICAN on higher pressure or temperature requirements. **Bolt torque applicable only to flanged joints with Toruseal® gaskets. Clean flange faces and faced pipe ends thoroughly prior to installation. Do not use joint or gasket compounds with Toruseal® gaskets(assemble joints dry). For use with standard flange bolts. Holes match AWWA C110, C111, and C115 flange drilling. They also match certain flange drilling classes of AWWA C207 and ANSI B16.1 and B16.42 flanges. Toruseal® gaskets may be used with steel pipe flanges in the 14”–54” sizes in some cases. Check AMERICAN for details, or when connecting to any flange configured differently than flanges per AWWA C110 or C115.
