NARRATIVE
U1 WB 43rd center turn lane to turn left into business drive; U2 EB 43rd lane #1 to turn right at East
Valley Rd; lane #2 and lane #3 left gap for U1; U1 FTYROW and turned in front of U2
On 05-03-23 at about 1456 hours, I was dispatched to a blocking collision near the entrance to Jack
in the Box (8829 S 180th St, Kent). The roadway in front of the location is in the City of Renton,
County of King and approximately the 300 block of SW 43rd St. I arrived in the area at about 1510
hours. I observed the vehicles partially blocking the entrance to the parking lot and lane #1 of EB SW
43rd St. I assisted the driver of Unit 02 move their vehicle by pushing it by hand into the parking lot.
Unit 01 was able to move forward under its own power.
The driver of Unit 02 was identified by WA DL and admitted to driving the listed vehicle. Unit 02 was
east bound in lane #1 of SW 43rd St with the intent to turn right (south) onto East Valley Rd at the
next intersection. The driver said the other east bound lanes were stopped with traffic. The driver of
Unit 02 said Unit 01 turned in front of her vehicle and she was unable to avoid the collision.
The driver of Unit 01 was identified by WA DL and admitted to driving the listed vehicle. Unit 01 was
west bound in the center turn lane of SW 43rd St with the intent to turn left (south) into the parking lot.
The driver of Unit 01 said two lanes of east bound traffic left a space for his vehicle to turn left. Unit
01 turned left across lanes #3 and #2 and entered lane #1 where his vehicle was hit by Unit 02. The
driver of Unit 01 believed Unit 02 was speeding.
I observed major damage to the passenger side of Unit 01 and front of Unit 02. The front airbags and
knee airbags were deployed on Unit 02. The damage to both vehicles was consistent with the
information provided by both drivers. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
The predominant factor leading to the collision Unit 01 failing to yield the right of way to Unit 02. Per
46.61.185 the driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left within an intersection or into an alley,
private road, or driveway shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite
direction which is within the intersection or so close thereto as to constitute an immediate hazard.
Were it not for the actions of the driver of Unit 01, the collision would not have occurred.
No infractions or citations issued. Report for information and insurance.
