EE20666 CASE# 23-12892 OF COLLISION 11/08/23 16:43 OF CbLLI510N NARRATIVE 23-12892 On 11/08/2023 at approximately 1657 hours, I was dispatched to an unknown-if-injury and blocking vehicle collision at the intersection of NE Sunset Boulevard and North Southport Drive, within the City Limits of Renton, County of King, State of Washington. While en route, Dispatch advised of a three-vehicle collision between a commercial vehicle and two other passenger vehicles that occurred in the roadway and were blocking. Renton Officers N. Odalovic and E. Chang arrived on scene prior to me and requested the Renton Regional Fire Authority (RRFA) respond for an evaluation of an involved party complaining of shoulder pain. Upon my arrival, RRFA was on scene conducting an evaluation of the involved parties. There, I collected each of the involved party's information and their independent involvement leading up to the collision. The driver of Unit#1 stated he was the sole occupant of his commercial vehicle with 53' oversized trailer attached. The driver of Unit#1 stated that he had just exited 1-405 North and was stopped at the intersection of NE Sunset Boulevard/N Southport Dr in lane 2 of 3. The driver of Unit#1 stated he was intending to turn westbound onto N Southport Dr. The driver of Unit#1 stated that upon the traffic light changing to green, he proceeded out into the intersection to begin his turn. The driver of Unit#1 noticed that traffic had queued for vehicles traveling westbound on N Southport Dr causing backed up vehicles all the way to the intersection of NE Sunset Blvd. The driver of Unit#1 believed that he could continue his turn without interference to other traffic but subsequently contacted Unit#2, which was stopped in the adjacent lane, causing minor damage to the trailer of Unit#1. The driver of Unit#2 stated he was the sole occupant of his vehicle and had just exited 1-405 North and was stopped at the intersection of NE Sunset Boulevard/N Southport Dr in lane 3 of 3. The driver of Unit#2 stated he was intending to turn westbound onto N Southport Dr. The driver of Unit#2 stated that upon the traffic light changing to green, he proceeded out into the intersection to begin his turn. The driver of Unit#2 stated that traffic was queued back to the intersection he was turning from but that he was not in the intersection itself. While stopped, Unit#1 collided into the rear passenger side of Unit#2 causing significant damage to the rear passenger side of Unit#2. As a result of the initial impact with Unit#1, Unit#2 was pushed forward into the rear of Unit#3. The driver of Unit#3 stated he was the sole occupant of his vehicle and had just exited 1-405 North and was stopped at the intersection of NE Sunset Boulevard/N Southport Dr in lane 3 of 3 and directly behind Unit#2. The driver of Unit#3 stated he was intending to turn westbound onto N Southport Dr. The driver of Unit#3 stated that upon the traffic light changing to green, he proceeded out into the intersection to begin his turn. The driver of Unit#3 stated that traffic was queued back to the intersection he was turning from but that he was not in the intersection itself. While stopped, Unit #2 collided into the rear of Unit#3 causing minor damage to the rear of Unit#3. Based on the above statements, 1 determined that the Driver of Unit#1 (Sharp) was the predominant factor for the cause of collision as Sharp violated RCW 46.61.140(1) which states that a vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practicable entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from such lane until the driver has first ascertained that such movement can be made with safety. Sharp made a turn and due to the size of trailer, Unit#1 entered into Unit#2's lane of travel, causing a collision. I issued the driver of Unit#1 (Sharp) a written warning in-person for an Improper Turn as Unit#1 should have waited/given the right of way to any vehicle occupying the adjacent lane of travel until Unit#1 could safely proceed with the turn and not interfere with other traffic. Unit#2 had to be impounded due to extensive damage. Both Unit#1 and Unit#3 were able to be driven away without further incident. An exchange of information was provided to all involved parties.
