Human Trafficking Update Detective Meg Braun, Special Enforcement Team AG E N D A I T E M # 1 . a ) Agenda •Runaway  Update •Illicit Massage Parlors/Store Front  Brothels •Proactive Investigations •Case Studies •Trends AG E N D A I T E M # 1 . a ) Runaways –Missing Juveniles •Frequent/repetitive runaways are at higher risk for trafficking •Increased risk if victim of sexual assault, rape of a child or molestation •Officers have been trained to ask the guardians questions to determine  if trafficking or internet related crimes may be involved •Renton Police track runaways •The Detective responsible for missing persons, including runaways, will let the  Detectives responsible for trafficking/internet crimes against children know if he  believes a child is at risk. We  then can search commercial sex websites for them  and reach out to task forces to assist with locating the missing youths •Juvenile Justice Project –email list of Detectives, Crime Analysts,  Prosecutors in the region who investigate human trafficking. Useful to  disseminate  information, locate at risk runaways AG E N D A I T E M # 1 . a ) Runaways –the Stats •Runaways in 2023  –106 runaway/missing children report •Runaways in 2024  (through 11/5) –89 runaway/missing  children reports •High Risk Runaways  2023  –2 teenage females identified as  at risk •High Risk Runaways  2024  –6 teenage females identified  as at risk, including the same two females from 2023. For  all those identified as at risk, additional information has  been/will be provided to their guardians AG E N D A I T E M # 1 . a ) Illicit Massage Parlors •Currently I have identified 30 IMPs operating in  Renton •Complicated investigations •Victims unlikely to cooperate because of fear  of deportation, retaliation to family in home  country •Emphasis to address this is scheduled for early  2025   AG E N D A I T E M # 1 . a ) Illicit Massage Parlors AG E N D A I T E M # 1 . a ) Proactive Investigations  •Commercial Sexual Abuse of Minors –CSAM •Promoting Prostitution/Rescue Operations AG E N D A I T E M # 1 . a ) Case Studies •Runaway  ‐24‐7320 •Operation 2023‐Promoting/Rescuing •Operation 2024  –CSAM Time and people intensive operations, utilize OSA, all divisions within department AG E N D A I T E M # 1 . a ) Trends •Aurora •Increased in movement  •Decrease age of those committing  promoting (juveniles) •Increase in males being trafficked •Sex‐buyers increasingly savvy to police  tactics AG E N D A I T E M # 1 . a ) AG E N D A I T E M # 2 . a ) AG E N D A I T E M # 2 . a ) AG E N D A I T E M # 2 . a ) AG E N D A I T E M # 2 . a ) AG E N D A I T E M # 2 . a ) AG E N D A I T E M # 2 . a ) AG E N D A I T E M # 2 . a )
