#7408 – Request Board review for additional Long-Term Care/Assisted Living due to
change in circumstances.
Erika Eddins presented to the board that a retiree is seeking approval for an increase in
their monthly reimbursement for Long-Term Care, beyond what was previously
approved due to a change in their medical care needs. The retiree has submitted the
necessary medical documentation to support the request for the Board's review. The
total cost of the care services requested is more than the average range for similar
services in the region. Staff presented the geographic region average ranges for similar
care, which varied from $5,700 to $7,700 per month.
There was discussion about limits in approving long term care expenses. James Alberson
asked if anyone could speak to claims to the past. Erika stated that in the last 3 years
there have not been approvals that have been beyond the limits of the average
geographic region costs.
James Alberson Jr. moved to deny the claim request for the requested total amount of
$12,331 per month, Ruth Perez seconded.
Jim commented that the dollar amount for the extra cost has to deal with
transportation to medical care and other specific needs for the member. Erika clarified
the retiree has an approved claim from the Board for home care services and it includes

transportation to medical care and other care services. It was noted that the care facility does not

Jim Matthew stated precedents have been established based upon current rules related to average
costs, and one of the options the Board has is to approve an amount with a limitation.
