Meter in Sidewalks Retrofit Program
Final Project Summary
Update 08/29/2024
Goal:
To retrofit meter boxes (lids, mushrooms) and prevent hazards citywide, specifically targeting meters
located on sidewalks and driveways.
Historical or Pre-existing Data:
None available.
Initial Assessment, Data Collection, and Findings:
• GIS Data Collection: Collected and compiled comprehensive GIS data on meter box locations on
sidewalks and driveways throughout the city.
• Visual Inspection: Conducted inspections to assess the condition of meter boxes, including lids,
mushrooms, brackets, and plugs.
• GIS Data Updates: Revised GIS data to add or remove meters from the MIS category and update
driveway locations.
Analysis:
• Heat Mapping: Utilized GIS to create heat maps identifying concentrations of meters needing
repairs, with a focus on high-severity areas, particularly in downtown.
• Route Mapping: Defined routes for inspections and retrofits, continually updating GIS data to
reflect accurate site conditions.
• GIS Dashboard: Developed for efficient review, tracking work orders, and visualizing progress.
Cityworks Integration:
• Work Order Management: Created and managed work orders for all assets requiring
retrofitting, including a tailored work order template and email notifications.
• Dashboard Development: Created an interactive mapping and tracking dashboard for real-time
project oversight.
Project Components:
• GIS: Data research, geoprocessing, route planning, and configuration; Mapping Atlas and heat
map creation.
• Cityworks: Configuration, work order management, progress tracking, and reporting.
• PW Shops: Managed field operations, including ordering parts, hiring, training, and supervision.
Challenges and Delay Causes:
• Part Orders: Delays due to backorders and late deliveries.
• Staffing: Onboarding and training new hires.
• Technical Issues: Radio communication problems, reporting, and billing issues.
• Cityworks Issues: Minor template and email notification problems.
• GIS Data Accuracy: Initial inaccuracies in GIS data required updates; no GPS was used initially.
• Asset Management: Adjusting work orders to add or remove assets based on site conditions.
Summary:
• Total Work Orders: 2,013
• Total Repairs: 1,257
• No Repairs Needed: 756
• Total Cost: $44,527
o Material Costs: $21,332
