EXAMINATION PROCESS:
Public Safety Testing conducts the initial written test and physical exam and forwards those candidates that pass
the physical agility exam and have a passing score of 70% or more on the written test to the City for further
testing. The written test is valid for 15 months. The Police Department invited the top candidates to an interview
based on the written test scores that the City received. Only those candidates who pass with an 70% or higher
oral board score would be placed on the eligibility list. The oral board score has a 70% weight of the final score
with the written score has a 30% weight.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Must be 21 years of age by the date of the written examination; must be a lawful permanent resident or U.S.
citizen; must be able to read and write the English language; must be a high school graduate or equivalent; must
be able to meet minimum medical standards; must be able to pass a background investigation, psychological
evaluation, drug screen, and polygraph examination prior to hire; must possess a valid Washington State driver’s
license without record of suspension or revocation of driving privileges in this or any other state.
EXAMINATION CONTENT:
The oral board interview consists of a set of 14 structured questions, and the rating of five dimensions, developed
for an entry level police officer. A passing score of 70% or greater on the oral board examination is required to be
placed on the eligibility list.

EXAMINATION PROCESS:
The City invites eligible candidates to apply directly to the City of Renton website for the position of
Lateral Police Officer. Eligible candidates are invited to participate in an oral board. Only those
candidates who pass with a 70% or higher oral board score would be placed on the eligibility list. The
oral board score has a 100% weight of the final score.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
At least 12 months experience, within the last 36 months, as a full-time paid Police Officer. The 12 months
of experience will be waived if the applicant has successfully completed a state law enforcement academy
that is recognized by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission (WSCJTC) and was
released due to budgetary constraints and eligible for rehire by that former agency. Must be 21 years of
age by the date of the written examination; must be a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident; must
be able to read and write the English language; must be a high school graduate or equivalent; must be
able to meet minimum medical standards; must be able to pass a background investigation, psychological
evaluation, drug screen, and polygraph examination prior to hire; must possess a valid Washington State
driver’s license without record of suspension or revocation of driving privileges in this or any other state.

Eligible applicants indicated their intention to participate in the examination process by submitting
an online application. The top candidates based on how they answered supplemental questions in
the online application were invited to participate in an interview. The examination assessors for the
November interview were as follows:

The Interview was worth 100% of the candidate’s final score. The Oral Board Interview required a
minimum score of 70% for placement on the eligibility list. Candidates were ranked on a one-year

EXAMINATION CONTENT:
The examination consisted of three major components: A Department Work Rating, an Oral
Board/Structured Interview, Role Play and Tactical. A combined minimum score of 70% on all three
components was required for placement on the eligibility list. Candidates had the option of attending a
candidate orientation on May 7, 2024. Janelle Tarasewicz from ApertureEQ facilitated the Work Rating
and Assessment Center
Department Work Rating – Worth 35% of the total score. The Sergeant Staff Raters consisted of 14
Sergeants.
The Oral Resume and Interview - Worth 20% of the total score. Candidates provided a three-minute Oral
Resume followed by answering questions provided by the panel. The assessors consisted of the following:
Chuck Pepka, CEO, Renton Coil Spring; Chase VanCleave, Sergeant, Washington State Patrol; Ty Farillas,
Captain, Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco Police (Seattle)
The Role Play - Worth 20% of the total score - Candidates engaged in a role play exercise which was
designed to test the challenges that come with supervising entry level officers. The assessors consisted of
the following:

decision-making, authority, duties, and responsibilities of a Sergeant in-charge using available resources.

SUBJECT: Promotional Examination to Establish Eligibility List for the Position of Police Sergeant
ELIGIBILITY
REQUIREMENTS
Applicants for this classification must have completed at least five years of commissioned
law enforcement experience, with the last three years as a Police Officer in the Renton
Police Department at the time of the Assessment Center (starting June 3rd, 2024).

PROCEDURE
Eligible Police Officers who intend to participate in this promotional examination must
submit their application online by April 11th, 2024. Please visit the following website to

Candidates will receive an email as receipt of delivery, after the position closes.
EXAMINATION
COMPONENTS
Department Work Rating: Weighted at 35% of the final score
• Will be conducted June 7th, 2024.
• The rating is conducted by a panel of City of Renton Police Sergeants. The panel
will rate candidates on documented work performance, candidate resumes, and
submitted writing samples. More information will be shared with candidates
after the posting closes.
• HR will obtain and submit the performance evaluations that were completed in
2022 and 2023.

Assessment Center:
Will be conducted on June 3rd and/or 4th, 2024, and each exam will be weighted as noted
below. Panel members will rate candidates based on predetermined dimensions. The
Assessment Center will consist of the following exercises:
• Tactical Exam: 25% of final score - Candidates will be presented with field scenarios
and incidents that depict a "day in the life" of a Sergeant. Candidates may also be
asked follow-up questions regarding their responses to each incident.
• Oral Resume and Interview: 20% of final score - Candidates will present their
background, experience, and qualifications for the position, as well as answer
questions from the assessors.
• Role Play/Supervisor Simulation: 20% of final score - Candidates will be presented
with a scenario-based exercise based on a personnel, citizen, or other supervisory
issue or complaint. At the conclusion of the role play, candidates may be asked
interview-style questions.
A weighted (Department Work Rating and Assessment Center) minimum score of 70% is
required for placement on the eligibility list. The two-year list will be established effective
July 29, 2024.
