HomeMy WebLinkAboutSWP2701438 Li GEOLOGIC INVESTIGATION OF P-1 AND P-9 CHANNELS FROM THE DISCHARGE STRUCTURE TO SOUTH 180th STREET EAST SIDE GREEN RIVER WATERSHED KING COUNTY, WASHINGTON OCTOBER 1981 INTRODUCTION The purpose of the investigation was to determine subsurface soil conditions as they relate to slope stability of the P-1 and P-9 channels . The channels are designed to be rock protected where maximum stream velocities exceed 2.0 feet per second. Therefore, erosional stability of the channel is not evaluated in this report. This investigation included boring 14 test holes and supplements previous studies made on the P-1 channel . The test holes were drilled with ',Mobile B-61 track-mounted rig using continuous hollow stem augers. Disturbed soil samples were obtained by conducting standard penetration tests at five-foot intervals . Sixteen disturbed samples were submitted to the soils laboratory for classification tests and five undisturbed Shelby push tube samples were submitted for triaxial shear tests . Permeability tests, using well recovery method, were run to estimate effective water level drawdown distances from the proposed channel work adjacent to the Great Northern Railway located from Station 580+00 to South 180th Street. The depth of borings ranged from 21 .S feet to 26.5 feet which bottomed the test holes about 3 to S feet below the elevation of the proposed channel bottom. Other non-SCS sources of subsurface information used for this report were obtained from soils reports by Shannon and Wilson, Inc. entitled Soil Investi- gation Proposed Drainage Channel Earlington Industrial Tract, dated February 1967, and Report on Foundation Investigation Industrial Tract, Orillia, Wash- ington, dated April 1965 . This geologic report is divided into two separate sections based on channel reaches namely; one, from Station 72S+00 to Station 670+00 and two, from Station 670+00 to South 180th Street, including the P-9 channel . I i i SECTION I cD`.n?CRY OF FINDINGS ;ne entire length of the storage basin and P-1 channel is underlain with eque of organic, soft, silts and clayey silts . This deposit ranges a sequence in nes from 3.0 to 17 . 0 feet and is locally underlain with very loose to loose stratified, silty sands and sandy silts . Throughout the entire length of the storage basin and channel the upper deposits are in turn underlain with a continuous deposit of slightly silty to clean, fine to me sand. The fine grained sands are generally in a loose state while ands contain gravels and have higher lower positioned, medium grained s relative densities . The watertable, as measured in January 1981 , lies at elevations of 2.0 to , . 5 feet above mean sea level . No bank protection is designated on the proposed 3:1 slopes of the storage basin that lies immediately above the P-1 pump plant between Stations 725+00 and 706+55. Excavation to the low flo w invert of the storage basin (elevation 1.0 foot below mean sea level) will encounter a sequence' of 6.0 to 17.0 feet of soft, stratified silts (ML) , organic silts and clays (OL, OH) , and loose, fine silty sands (SM) . These deposits are underlain with a continuous layer of medium to loose, fine grained sand (SP, SP/SM) . The P-1 channel will be rock protected and have chanlside slopes o f3 the lto 1. The basal sands (SP, SP/SM) continue throughout thelength profile from Station 706+55 .to oation 6siltycept sandsrexistPrthemoverlying®ns 697+00 to 686+00 where an inlierf stratified sediments consist generally of soft silts and organic silts . In order to assist. in evaluating the stability of soils to be encountered during construction of the storage basin and P-1 channel , it was deemed 3 advisable to set up a list of parameters that would act as a guide in selecting t reaches where questionable soil stability conditions exist. The following are: 1 . Excavating into a loose to moderately loose sand (SP) or silty sand (SM) . The densities of these materials are based on penetration resistance tests (blow counts less than 10 per foot) . 2. Encountering the above materials below the water table. j' 3. Encountering the above two conditions where more than two feet of soil J thickness is exposed during excavation. { R CONCLUSIONS 1. Bank sloughing and heaving of the bottom of the storage basin may locally occur if the required excavation penetrates into the water table and exposes loose saturated sands. The water table is believed under a 1Qw hydrostatic head due to the confining nature of the silt strata that overlies the water bearing sands. An estimated one-half of the basin could have soil conditions as described above. 2. If a water table is encountered during construction of the P-1 channel, bank sloughing may occur. Reaches that may be most prone to bank instability lie from approximate Station 696+00 to 690+00 and from Station 680+00 to 671+00. At these locations saturated loose, fine sands extend from 2.0 to 7_.0 feet above the bottom of the invert. The remaining reaches of the P-1 channel will lie in either silty soils and/or medium dense to dense sands and gravelly sands. 3. The water table was measured in January 1981. From these measurements the entire length of the excavated P-1 channel would encounter 3.5 to 7.0 feet of saturated soils and the storage basin construction will en- counter saturated soils from 2.5 to 3.5 feet. It is not believed that even during the drier months a substantial lowering of the water table will occur. 4. The above three items may require the installation of a dewatering system during construction of the storage basin and P-1 channel. S. Grain size distribution curves show wide differences in grain sizes and grain size distribution (see grain size distribution curves in soil test section) . Higher densities were correlated with sand deposits f having larger grain sizes and a greater distribution of grain sizes. 6. Computations of water table drawdown curves indicate no subsidence problems k to existing structures from channel excavation.
