Re: Tree Condition and Impact Assessment Report - Cascade Greens, Renton.
This report is provided to address the City of Renton’s requirement for conducting an
impact and condition assessment of retained trees on developing lots. I visited the site
yesterday to meet with you, discuss the needs of my report and conduct an assessment
of the four retained trees.
1.0 Retained Tree Condition and Impact Assessment
I conducted visual evaluations of all the trees according to ISA standards and based
upon many years conducting such evaluations on trees in the Pacific Northwest. I
oberserved trees up close to inspect conditions of the trunk and from afar to inspect
conditions in the crowns. All assessments were conducted according to the methods
specified in the ISA Tree Risk Assessment Manual (Dunster, Julian A., E. Thomas
Smiley, Nelda Matheny, and Sharon Lily. 2013. Tree Risk Assessment Manual.
Champaign, Illinois: International Society of Arboriculture) and on nearly 20 years
experience conducting such evaluations.
The investigations involved the gathering of the following information:
• Tree species
• Trunk diameter
• Crown spread diameter
• Location factors
• Health and condition notes (general level of vigor, defects, disease or pest
problems)
The results of my condition assessments of the 30 trees on the property found 26
trees to be in good condition and health without significant defects or conditions that
would pose a significant level of risk.
Four trees have been retained along the perimeter of the project site, three along the
western boundary and one along the south. The three along the western border are (as
aligned from north to south) a western white pine (Pinus monticola) measuring 20” dbh
with a crown spread of 34’ diameter, a Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) measuring
36” dbh with a crown spread of 36’ diameter and another Douglas fir measuring 26” dbh
with a crown spread of 36’ diameter. The tree along the southern border is a black
cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa) measuring 16” dbh with a crown spread of 34’
diameter. Aside from a minor lean in the western white pine and small multiple tops in

the second Douglas fir and ivy growin up the trunks of all three, they are all in generally
good condition and health.
2.0 Tree Protection and Follow Up Measures
The chainlink tree protection fencing was in place at the driplines at the time of my visit
providing adequate protection for the trees. Following are my recommended follow up
measures.
• In order to maintain non-hazardous situations on the new lots, the trees should
be monitored yearly in the late summer/early autumn.
3.0 Use of This Report
This report is provided to Sapphire Homes as a means of addressing the retained trees
on the Cascade Greens project site. As trees are dynamic, their conditions can change
rapidly, therefore this report does not warrant the conditions of the retained trees into
the future. Given the degree of impacts and potential root loss, this report cannot
guarantee that the development actions will not adversely affect the health or stability of
these trees.
