CD 1. SHEET PILES SHALL BE HOT -ROLLED SECTIONS AND CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF ASTM A572 GR 50 OR
CY) APPROVED EQUAL. COLD FORMED SHEET PILE SECTIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS PROJECT.

't 2. THE SHEET PILING SHALL BE NEW MATERIAL. IDENTIFIABLE. IN GOOD CONDITION FREE OF BENDS AND OTHER
STRUCTURAL DEFECTS. THE INTERLOCKS MUST BE FREE SLIDING, PROVIDE A SWING ANGLE SUITABLE FOR THE
6 INTENDED INSTALLATION. BUT NOT LESS THAN 6 DEGREES WHEN INTERLOCKED. THE SHEETS SHALL MAINTAIN
W CONTINUOUS INTERLOCKING WHEN INSTALLED THROUGHOUT THEIR ENTIRE LENGTH.
3. SHEET PILES SHALL BE SHOP FABRICATED SUCH THAT NO FIELD WELDING 15 REQUIRED. SHEET PILES SHALL BE
SUPPLIED AND DRIVEN WITHOUT SPLICES.
4. ALL SHEET PILE SHALL BE PZ 40 SHEET PILING WITH S = 61.3 IN.3/FT AND 1 = 502.7 IN.4/FT. OR
PZC 37 SHEET PILING WITH 5 = 68.5 IN.3/FT. AND I = 719.6 IN.4/FT., OR PZC39 SHEET PILING WITH
S = 72.3 IN-3/FT. AND I = 762.1 IN-4/FT. OR APPROVED EQUAL. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL FURNISH A COPY OF
THE PUBLISHED SHEET PILE SECTION PROPERTIES TO THE OWNER FOR VERIFICATION PURPOSES. THE OWNER'S
APPROVAL WILL BE REQUIRED PRIOR TO DRIVING ANY SHEETING. ALL DRIVEN SHEETING NOT APPROVED BY THE
OWNER SHALL BE REMOVED AT THE CONTRACTOR'S
EXPENSE.
5. COMPLETE DESCRIPTIONS OF DRIVING EQUIPMENT INCLUDING HAMMERS. EXTRACTORS. PROTECTION CAPS AND
OTHER INSTALLATION APPURTENANCES SHALL BE SUBMITTED FOR APPROVAL PRIOR TO THE COMMENCEMENT OF WORK.
6. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL SUBMIT TO THE OWNER A COMPLETE AND ACCURATE RECORD OF EACH DRIVEN SHEET
PILE. WITHIN 3 DAYS OF COMPLETION OF DRIVING. THE RECORD SHALL INDICATE THE SHEET PILE LOCATION.
DRIVEN LENGTH, EMBEDDED LENGTH. FINAL ELEVATIONS OF TIP AND TOP, PILE WEIGHT AND THE TOTAL DRIVING
TIME. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL ALSO PROVIDE THE BLOWS REQUIRED FOR EACH FOOT OF THE FINAL 5 FEET OF
PENETRATION FOR SHEET PILE INSTALLED WITH AN IMPACT DRIVING HAMMER. OR THE INSTALLATION RATE FOR
EACH FOOT OF THE FINAL 5 FEET OF PENETRATION FOR SHEET PILE INSTALLED WITH A VIBRATORY HAMMER, THE
RECORD SHALL ALSO INCLUDE A DESCRIPTION OF THE DRIVING EOUIPMENT USED. THE RATE OF OPERATION, AND
THE TYPE OF PROTECTION CAP AS APPLICABLE. ANY UNUSUAL CONDITIONS ENCOUNTERED DURING PILE INSTALLLATION
SHALL BE RECORDED AND IMMEDIATELY REPORTED TO THE OWNER. THE REQUIRED INFORMATION SHALL BE PROVIDED
ON A SUMMARY FORM FOR EACH PIECE OF SHEETING.
7. SHEET PILES TO BE STORED SHALL BE PLACED ON SKIDS ABOVE GROUND AND A SUFFICIENT NUMBER USED TO
PREVENT VISIBLE DEFLECTION IN THE STORED SHEETING. SHEET PILES SHALL BE KEPT CLEAN AND FULLY DRAINED
AT ALL TIMES. THE METHOD OF HANDLING SHALL BE SUCH THAT NO DAMAGE WILL RESULT TO THE SHEET PILES.
8. SHEET PILES SHALL BE DRIVEN WITH STEAM. AIR. OR DIESEL POWERED HAMMERS APPROVED BY THE OWNER PRIOR
TO USE. THE USE OF DROP HAMMERS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED. THE WEIGHT OF THE RAM OF THE HAMMER SHALL
NOT EXCEED 7000 LB. UNLESS APPROVED IN WRITING BY THE OWNER. THE HAMMER TO BE USED SHALL HAVE THE
APPROVAL OF THE OWNER, STEEL SHEET PILES MAY BE DRIVEN WITH VIBRATORY HAMMERS UNDER CONDITIONS
APPROVED BY THE OWNER.
9. THE HAMMER SHALL BE OPERATED AT ALL TIMES AT PRESSURES AND SPEEDS RECOMMENDED BY THE
MANUFACTURER. IF STEAM OR AIR HAMMERS ARE USED. BOILER OR AIR COMPRESSOR CAPACITY SHALL BE
ADEQUATE TO MAINTAIN FULL RATED PRESSURE THROUGHOUT THE DRIVING PERIOD OF ANY PILE. THE BOILER OR
AIR COMPRESSOR SHALL BE EQUIPPED WITH AN ACCURATE PRESSURE GAGE AT ALL TIMES.
10. PILE DRIVERS SHALL BE EQUIPPED WITH LEADS WHICH ARE CONSTRUCTED IN SUCH A MANNER AS TD AFFORD
FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT OF THE HAMMER AND TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE SUPPORT OF THE PILE DURING DRIVING. THE
LONGITUDINAL AXIS OF THE LEADS AND HAMMER SHALL COINCIDE WITH THE LONGITUDINAL AXIS OF THE PILE.
THE LEADS SHALL BE LONG ENOUGH SO THAT A FOLLOWER WILL NOT BE NECESSARY.
11. SHEET PILES SHALL BE DRIVEN TO SATISFY THE FOLLOWING TOLERANCES:
A. THE CENTERLINE OF THE SHEET PILE SHALL BE WITHIN 11•2 IN, OF PLAN LOCATION AND 1 IN. OFFSET
AT THE TOP OF THE PILE.
B. THE OUT OF VERTICAL PLUMBNESS OF THE SHEET PILE SHALL NOT EXCEED 1.0 PERCENT.
C. THE TOP OF THE SHEET PILE SHALL BE A MIN. OF 6 1N. ABOVE THE RETAINED SOIL ELEVATION.
D. ALL SHEET PILES SHALL BE DRIVEN TO A PENETRATION SATISFACTORY TO THE OWNER.
12. STEEL SHEET PILES SHALL BE DRIVEN WITH A DRIVING HEAD COMPATIBLE WITH THE SPECIFIC PILE SHAPE
DRIVEN. CARE SHALL BE EXERCISED TO AVOID DAMAGE TO SHEET PILES FROM OVERDRIVING. ANY SHEET PILE
a THAT 15 DAMAGED TO THE EXTENT THAT, IN THE OPINION OF THE OWNER. IT WILL NOT PERFORM ITS DESIGN
FUNCTION OR ANY SHEET PILE THAT 15 DRIVEN OFF LOCATION OR ALIGNMENT BEYOND THE ALLOWABLE TOLERANCES
SHALL BE PULLED. SPLICING OF SHEET PILES WILL NOT BE PERMITTED. IF THE DEFECTIVE PILE CONDITION
IS DUE TO CONTRACTOR'S NEGLIGENCE. THE COST OF REPLACEMENT AND REDRIVING SHALL BE BORNE BY THE

CONTRACTOR.
13. SHEET PILES SHALL BE CUT OFF, WITH A CUTTING TORCH, OR BY OTHER ACCEPTABLE METHODS, TO THE ELEVATION
SHOWN ON THE PLANS OR ESTABLISHED BY THE OWNER. ALL HOLES IN SHEET PILING FOR GROUND ANCHOR
m INSTALLATION MAY BE DRILLED OR TORCHED. HOLES IN BEARING PLATES MUST BE DRILLED AND REAMED TO THE
SPECIFIED DIAMETER.
14. NO SHEET PILING SHALL PROTRUDE ABOVE THE TOP OF RAIL IN ANY LOCATION WHERE IT IS WITHIN TEN FEET OF

THE TRACK SIDE OF THE EXCAVATION. AND DESIGN AND
INSTALLATION OF A RAILING/PROTECTIVE FENCE ALONG THE
EXCAVATION PERIMETER. THE WALKWAY, RAILING. AND
PROTECTVE FENCING SYSTEM SHALL BE INSTALLED AND
