GENERAL NOTES:
GENERAL:
1. ALL MATERIAL AND WORKMANSHIP SHALL BE AS PER THE CURRENT AREMA MANUALS FOR
RAILWAY ENGINEERING: CHAPTER 8 CONCRETE STRUCTURES AND FOUNDATIONS, AND
CHAPTER 15 STEEL STRUCTURES, EXCEPT THAT THE BATTER PILES ARE TO BE BATTERED AT
4 (HORIZONTAL) TO 12 (VERTICAL).
2. THE BNSF STANDARD CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATIONS INCLUDED IN THE PROJECT SPECIAL
PROVISIONS SUPPLEMENT AND THE ABOVE AREMA MANUALS SHALL GOVERN. WSDOT
SPECIFICATIONS SHALL BE FOLLOWED FOR REMAINING ITEMS.
STRUCTURE EXCAVATION AND BACKFILL:
1. ALL STRUCTURE EXCAVATION AND BACKFILL SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE WSDOT
SPECIFICATIONS AND THE SPECIAL PROVISIONS.
REINFORCEMENT:
1. STEEL BARS FOR REINFORCEMENT SHALL BE DEFORMED BILLET —STEEL BARS CONFORMING TO
THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE CURRENT ASTM DESIGNATION: A615, GRADE 60. OR A706 UNO.
2. FABRICATION FOR REINFORCEMENT SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH CHAPTER 7 OF THE
CURRENT CRSI MANUAL OF STANDARD PRACTICE.
3. REINFORCEMENT WIRE BAR SUPPORTS THAT ARE IN CONTACT WITH FORMS SHALL BE CLASS
1, PLASTIC PROTECTED, IN ACCORDANCE WITH CHAPTER 3 OF THE CURRENT CRSI MANUAL
OF STANDARD PRACTICE.
CAST —IN —PLACE CONCRETE:
1. ALL CONCRETE, CONCRETE WORK AND PLACEMENT OF REINFORCEMENT SHALL BE IN
ACCORDANCE WITH THE SPECIAL PROVISIONS, U.N.O. DETAILED FALSE WORK PLANS, IN
ACCORDANCE WITH PARAGRAPH 2.11 OF SPECIAL PROVISION 6-02, ARE REQUIRED AS
NECESSARY. ALL EXPOSED CONCRETE SURFACES SHALL RECEIVE A PIGMENTED SEALER FOR
CONCRETE SURFACES IN CONFORMANCE WITH WSDOT SPECIFICATION 6-02.3(14)C AND OF
WSDOT COLOR "WASHINGTON GRAY".
2. THE PORTLAND CEMENT USED IN ALL CONCRETE SHALL BE TYPE II OR TYPE IIA. ALL
CONCRETE SHALL BE AIR —ENTRAINED CONTAINING NOT LESS THAN 5 PERCENT NOR MORE
THAN 7 PERCENT AIR BY VOLUME. CONCRETE SHALL BE CLASS 40,IN ACCORDANCE WITH
THE SPECIAL PROVISIONS 6-02, WITH AN ULTIMATE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF NOT LESS
THAN 4000 PSI IN 28 DAYS. MAXIMUM SIZE OF COARSE AGGREGATE SHALL BE ONE INCH.
THE MINIMUM CONCRETE COVER TO REINFORCEMENT SHALL BE TWO INCHES UNLESS NOTED
OTHERWISE. EXPOSED CONCRETE EDGES SHALL BE BEVELED 3/4".
3. THE CONTRACTOR WILL DEVELOP A PROCEDURE THAT DURING THE PERIOD OF HEAT
DISSIPATION FOLLOWING CONCRETE PLACEMENT, THE TEMPERATURE DIFFERENTIAL BETWEEN
THE INTERIOR OF THE SECTION AND THE OUTSIDE SURFACE OF THE SECTION COMPLIES WITH
THE PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS. THE MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE SHALL BE 160' F. PROCEDURES
OPEN TO THE CONTRACTOR INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:
COOLING COMPONENT MATERIALS PRIOR TO ADDITION OF MIX
ADDING ICE TO THE MIX WATER
CONTROLLING RATE OF CONCRETE PLACEMENT
USING LOW OR MODERATE HEAT OF HYDRATION CEMENT
OTHER ACCEPTABLE METHODS DEVELOPED BY THE CONTRACTOR
PERVIOUS BACKFILL MATERIAL BEHIND WALLS:
1. PERVIOUS BACKFILL MATERIAL BEHIND WALLS SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SPECIAL
PROVISIONS.
PILING:
1. PILES SHALL MEET THE MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS OF ASTM A252 GRADE 3 AND SHALL BE
DRIVEN IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SPECIAL PROVISIONS 6-05. ALL PILES ARE TO BE DRIVEN
WITH CAST STEEL CONICAL PILE POINTS. PIPE PILES SHALL BE DRIVEN IN ACCORDANCE WITH
THE DETAILS AND NOTES ON SW-4.
2. AFTER PILES ARE DRIVEN, THEY SHALL BE CUT OFF AT THE PROPER ELEVATION. THE
SPECIFIED SHEAR STUDS SHALL THEN BE WELDED TO THE PILE AT EVEN SPACING IN
ACCORDANCE WITH THE DETAILS ON SW-5. THE DESIGNATED REINFORCING CAGE SHALL BE
CENTERED IN EACH PILE. EACH PILE SHALL THEN BE FILLED WITH WSDOT CLASS 4000P
CONCRETE HAVING AN ULTIMATE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH NOT LESS THAN 4000 PSI IN 28
DAYS.
DAMPPROOFING:

1. THE BACK FACE OF THE WALLS SHALL BE DAMPPROOFED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SPECIAL
PROVISIONS.

1. THE EXPANSION JOINT SHALL BE WATERPROOFED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE SPECIAL
PROVISIONS.
