NARRATIVE

CC
On 1/22/2025 at about 0629 hours I was dispatched to a 2 vehicle non injury non blocking crash at
the intersection of Oakesdale Ave SW at SW 7th St.
When I arrived I located a utility work truck facing northbound in lane 2 as the driver slowly got out he
told me the other driver took off. I asked him if he was okay and he said he wasnt. I requested
Renton Fire respond.
This blocking truck was unit 2. He told me he was northbound in lane 2 on Oakesdale Ave SW. He
said a white Tesla was coming around the curve in the roadway going way too fast. He told me the
Tesla was now in the head on lane of lane 2 northbound but driving southbound. Unit 2 said he was
unable to avoid unit 1. Unit 1 hit unit 2 at about a 50% overlap head on. Unit 2 was checked renton
Fire and advised to be transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital, however, he was taken to
VMC-ED by a coworker.
Unit 2 told me he was able to see the driver and described him. He described him as a African male
big dark hair thin and maybe about his height or close to it. He told me he was able to say to unit 1
wait here for the police and was one of the reasons he was able to provide such a good ID for unit 1.
Unit 2 had a video including the license plate of unit 1. The RO return had a picture of who unit 2
described.
At about 0732 a male walked up to my police Tahoe while unit 2 was seated in the front seat with me
trying to stay warm while waiting for his ride to the ER, when unit 2 blurted out "Thats the guy that hit
me" The man standing outside my Tahoe looked identical to the DOL picture reference the license
provided on unit 1 as it was driving off from unit 2.
1 got out of the Tahoe and asked him if I could help him. He said yes he was the driver of the Tesla
and told me he was nervous after the crash so he parked his car elsewhere and waited to come back
to the scene. I asked him if he was driving his car, crashed into unit 2 head on and then left the
scene and decided to come back about 45-50 minutes later and he told me yes. I asked him does
anyone else driver his car and he said no. He spoke in English during this contact.
Post Miranda unit 1 driver ID'd by his picture WADL as HABTOM MERID, Robel 04021995 told me
he was tired and may have been napping while driving but assured me it wasnt for more than a
minute or two when he was hit by unit 1. He told me he attempted to exchange info with unit 2, but
unit 2 wasnt cooperative so he left, because he was already "freaked out". Unit 1 told me he took his
car back to his place of work where he is a Amazon delivery driver.
When I tried to explain to him he was asleep behind the wheel of his car that he was driving and in
possession/control of, at what was described at a high rate of speed and left of center/double yellow,
that he hit unit 2. He argued that he was doing nothing wrong and he was hit. I clarified with him he
slept while driving left of center and caused an injury crash. He said he was hit and he did nothing
wrong.
I transported unit 1/Robel back to his vehicle and confirmed the plate provided and damages from the
crash. It would take a lot of effort to have safely drove away from this crash. I was surprised the
Tesla actually allow the car to move after so much damage and impact. See attached photos.
