Earthjustice is the nation’s leading, nonprofit environmental law organization August 2021 Earthjustice created a list of the top 100 lead polluting airports in the US. With this list Earthjustice included the following information. •Over 5 million people, including more than 360,000 children under the age of 5,live near at least one of the airports where piston-engine aircraft operate, according to EPA. •Multiple studies have shown that children who live near airports have higher levels of lead in their blood. •Most general aviation airports with the highest lead emissions are located around lower income communities with higher minority populations. •On August 3, 2021, the County released a peer-reviewed study showing that leaded aviation gasoline increased blood lead levels among thousands of children living nearby a local general aviation airport. Top Lead-polluting airports in the US based on 2017 data •Washington as 8 airports on the list. •5 of the 8 are clustered in a small area just south of Seattle. Boeing Field Renton Municipal Airport Crest Park in Kent Auburn Municipal Airport Pierce County Airport in Puyallup •62.5% of top lead producing airports in Washington are clustered in the 36 miles between Seattle and Puyallup •According to the EPA’s 2014 National Emissions Inventory Report, Renton generated the fourth-most lead emissions of airports in King County Do you live close enough to a small US airport to have lead exposure? Check our maps By David Yanofsky and Michael J. Coren Published June 16, 2022 •More than 80% of aircraft’s lead emission occurs as plane taxis, takes off and lands •Quartz analyzed 350 million aircraft transponder data points provided by ADS-B Exchange to map the flight paths of airplanes flying at the top 100 lead-emitting airports from 2016 to 2022. Aircraft were tracked between 50 and 10,000 ft of the FAA-listed elevation. Emissions are most likely to affect nearby communities at these altitudes 2023 EPA Endangerment Ruling The Washington Post 10/25/2023 ow Lead pollution from small planes threatens human health, EPA finds Story by Timothy Puko •The Environmental Protection Agency Wednesday announced it has determined that lead emitted from airplanes is a danger to public health, opening the door for the agency’s first-ever limits on lead fuel in aviation. •The EPA announcement listed a rash of damning statistics, including the number of piston aircraftusingleadedfuels(170,000)and the number of airports from which they operate (20,000).The EPAannouncementprojectsthat70percentofallleadintroducedtotheatmospherecomesfromthoseaircraft,and that people who live close to airports (“over 5 million people, including more than 360,000childrenundertheageoffive”)are most vulnerable. Contribution of childhood lead exposure to psychopathology in the US population over the past 75 years Michael J. McFarland,Aaron Reuben,Matt Hauer First published: 04 December 2024 Conclusions A significant burden of mental illness symptomatology and disadvantageous personality differences can be attributed to US children's exposure to lead over the past 75 years. Lead's potential contribution to psychiatry, medicine, and children's health may be larger than previously assumed. The findings revealed that childhood exposure to exhaust from leaded gas resulted in an imbalance of mental health in the U.S., which made "generations of Americans more depressed, anxious and inattentive or hyperactive," according to a Duke press release. The study, which was published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, attributed an estimated 151 million cases of psychiatric disorders over the past 75 years to leaded gas exposure in American children. Reuben reiterated how mental health in America was "likely significantly influenced by Americans’ exposure to lead over the past century." "Lead has played a larger role in our mental health than previously thought." "We assume that our ‘lead problem’ was solved in the 1970s and 1980s, but that was just the start of solving the problem," he said. The expert urged the public to take lead exposure seriously by removing hazards that still exist in some paint, fuel, batteries and other mediums. #2 Noise •Noise is a major concern in South Renton. This is particularly true now that the airport has installed a beacon effectively making the airport open 24 hours a day •Noise pollution can have many adverse health effects, including: •Hearing loss:Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is the most common health effect of noise pollution. It can be permanent and can limit your ability to hear high-frequency sounds and understand speech. •Mental health:Noise pollution can cause stress, anxiety, depression, and mood swings. It can also lead to sleep disturbances, fatigue, and irritability. •Physical health:Noise pollution can cause high blood pressure, heart disease, and an increased risk of diabetes. It can also cause respiratory agitation, headaches, and in extreme cases, gastritis, colitis, and heart attacks. •Behavior:Noise pollution can cause aggressive behavior. •Memory:Noise pollution can make it hard to study and can affect memory. The effects of noise pollution can be particularly damaging to the very young and the very old. #3 RAAC and Community Involvement City of Renton Ordinances CHAPTER 17 AIRPORT ADVISORY COMMITTEE 2-17-4 FUNCTION: The role of the Airport Advisory Committee will be to act in an advisory capacity to the Mayor and City Council on matters referred to the Airport Advisory Committee by the City Council. The primary function will be to provide a forum for members of the community to discusstheirconcernsdirectlywithairportoperatorsandforcollaborativeproblemsolvingandresolutionoftheirissues.(Ord.5155,9-26-05) #4 Economic Development The Impact of Airport Noise on Residential Real Estate by Randall Bell, MAI As populations and airports expand, airport noise is an increasingly important issue for real estate analysts. In researching real estate damage issues, the topic of airport noise and its impact on property market values are particularly well-documented and well-researched areas. This article puts airport noise into the framework of the Detrimental Conditions (DC) Matrix, outlines the measurement of “noise,” sets forth some of the health effects of airport noise, and addresses the impact that airport noise has on property market values. There are dozens of published studies on the topic, all of which virtually come to the conclusion that homes under or nearby the flight corridors of national or international airports experience some diminution in property market value abstract As populations and airports expand, airport noise is an increasingly important issue for real estate analysts. In researching real estate damage issues, the topic of airport noise and its impact on property market values are particularly well-documented and well-researched areas. Within the City of Renton one party’s economic growth should not come at the expense of another party’s economic growth. #5 Modern Airport As the Puget Sound Area grows and population density increases •The demands on airports are going to increase •Flights into and out of airports are going to increase •The number of hours in the day that airports are busy are going to increase •The number of people who are negatively impacted by airports are going to increase •The amount of air and noise pollution is going to increase •The severity of airport impacts on residents is going to increase How is the Renton Airport planning to manage, mitigate and reduce these impacts on your neighbors? What plans are the Renton Airport making to promote aviation practices and technologies that minimize it’s environmental impacts on Renton residents, who, are the actual owners of the Renton Municipal Airport?
