NARRATIVE
U1 SB lane #2 Benson; U2 EB lane #2 S 21st; U1 red light U2 green light
On 07-24-2024 at about 0850 hours, I was dispatched to a Collision in the vicinity of Benson Dr S and
S 21 st St in the City of Renton, County of King, Washington State. It was unknown if there were any
injuries and the vehicles were blocking the roadway. I arrived at about 0853 hours and observed two
(2) vehicles in the intersection blocking the southbound lanes of Benson Dr S. Two subjects were
standing outside the vehicles and indicated they were not injured. I directed the subjects to move the
vehicle out of the roadway and to the north shoulder of the 700 block of S 21 st St.
The driver of Unit 02 was identified by WA DL and admitted to driving the listed vehicle. The driver
said he was wearing a seatbelt and not injured as a result of the collision. Unit 02 was eastbound in
the 700 block of S 21st St in lane #2 (of 2) with the intent to turn left onto northbound Benson Dr S.
Unit 02 entered the intersection with a green traffic signal along with a Metro bus that was in lane #1.
The driver of Unit 02 observed Unit 01 approaching from the left. Unit 02 applied their brakes and
turned to the right to avoid colliding with Unit 01. The vehicles collided in the intersection.
The driver of Unit 01 was identified by WA DL and admitted to driving the listed vehicle. The driver
said he was wearing a seatbelt and not injured as a result of the collision. Unit 01 was southbound in
the 2000 block of Benson Dr S in lane #2 (of 3) with the intent to continue straight through the
intersection. The driver of Unit 01 said the sun interfered with his ability to see the traffic signal as he
entered the intersection.
I observed moderate damage to the front driver side corner of Unit 02 and front passenger corner and
tire of Unit 01. The damage to both vehicles was consistent with the information provided by both
drivers. Neither vehicle required a tow truck.
During the time of the collision, it was a clear blue sky and the sun was rising which I observed to the
east. The 2000 block of Benson Dr S is north-south roadway with an incline for southbound traffic. S
21 st St is an east-west roadway that intersects with Benson Dr S at a tee with a private drive to the
east. Based on the time of the collision, the rising sun to the east would more interfere with the
visibility of drivers that are eastbound on S 21st St and less for drivers on Benson Dr S.
The proximate cause of the collision was Unit 01 failing to comply with the red traffic signal for
southbound traffic on Benson Dr S. RCW 46.61.055(3)(a) states vehicle operators facing a steady
circular red signal shall stop at a clearly marked stop line, but if none, before entering the crosswalk
on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection control area and
shall remain standing until an indication to proceed is shown. Were it not for the actions of the driver
of Unit 01, the collision would not have occurred.
No citations or infractions issued. Report for information and insurance purposes.
