NARRATIVE
U2 In 2 stopped red light; U1 In 2 to In 1 skid, rotate -90 CC impact U2
On 09-18-2024 at about 1544 hours, I was dispatched to an injury collision near the intersection of
140th Way SE and SE 158th St in the City of Renton, County of King, Washington State. I arrived in
the area at about 1551 hours. Another officer had arrived on scene prior and began collection
information from the involved parties. I received the information from the officer and continued the
investigation.
The driver of Unit 02 was identified by WA DL and was seated in the driver seat of the vehicle. Unit
02 was northbound in lane #2 of 140th Way SE when it slowed for a yellow traffic signal at the
intersection with SE 158th St, eventually coming to a stop for a red traffic signal light. While stopped
at the intersection, Unit 02 was hit from behind by Unit 01. The front passenger of Unit 02
complained of back pain as a result of the collision.
The driver of Unit 01 was identified by WA DL and admitted to driving the listed vehicle. Unit 01 was
northbound in lane #2 of 140th Way SE and the 2nd car following behind Unit 02. Prior to the
intersection with SE 158th St, Unit 01 and the vehicle directly in front changed lanes into lane #1.
The driver of Unit 01 said the vehicles to his front came to a quick stop at the intersection. Unit 01
applied his brakes but the brakes locked and he began to skid. The driver of Unit 01 attempted to
move his vehicle to the left turn lane to avoid the other vehicles. The front passenger corner of Unit
01 collided with the rear of Unit 02. The driver of Unit 01 said his vehicle was old, not equiped with
anti-lock brakes and the tires were worn.
I observed moderate damage to the front bumper and passenger side fender of Unit 01. 1 observed
moderate damage to the rear of Unit 02. There were tire marks on 140th Way SE in both lane #1 and
#2 in the area described by the driver of Unit 01.
Unit 02 was equipped with cameras facing in multiple directions. The driver of Unit 02 was able to
show me video footage from his vehicle. The rear facing camera shows Unit 02 in lane #2 of 140th
Way SE and slowing to a stop. Unit 01 is behind Unit 02. Unit 01 begins to rotate counter clockwise
and collides with the rear of Unit 02. 1 later sent an e-mail link to the driver of Unit 02 requesting he
upload the video of the collision.
RCW 46.61.145 Following Too Closely states the driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another
vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicle
and the traffic upon and the condition of the highway. The proximate cause of the collision was Unit
01 following to closely to other vehicles on the roadway. Were it not for the actions of the driver of
Unit 01, the collision would not have occurred.
Notice of Infraction for Following Too Closely (RCW 46.61.145) sent to the Renton Municipal Court to
mail to the driver of Unit 01.
