NARRATIVE
24-11590
On November 8, 2024, at approximately 0844 hours, I was dispatched to an unknown-if-injury vehicle
collision at the intersection of Nelson PL NW and Rainier Ave N, within the City Limits of Renton,
County of King, State of Washington.
Upon my arrival, I confirmed there were no complaints of injury requiring immediate medical response
at the time of report. There, I was able to collect each involved party's information and independent
summary of the events leading up to the collision.
The driver of Unit#1 said he and his adult passenger were traveling southbound in about the 350
block of Rainier Ave N and approaching the intersection of Nelson PL NW in lane 1 of 2. The driver of
Unit#1 stated that he needed to make a U-Turn, so he moved right slightly to create a gap to make a
U-turn. When he proceeded to make a U-Turn, he never saw unit 2 which was in the number 1
southbound lane. Unit#1 and Unit#2 collided in lane 1 of 2 causing moderate damage to the driver's
side bumper and fender of Unit#1.
*It is important to note that the driver of unit 1 attempted to make U-turn at a place where it would be
considered improper. He planned to make a U-turn while being in the number 1 southbound lane,
cross the left turn lane, and head back north on Rainier Ave N.
The driver of Unit#2 said her, and her adult passenger were also traveling southbound in about the
350 block of Rainier Ave N approaching the intersection of NW 3rd PL in lane 1 of 2. The driver of
Unit#2 stated she was intending to continue straight when Unit#1 failed to notice her. The driver of
unit 1 made a right turn from NW 3rd PL and into lane 1 of 2 which Unit#2 was occupying. The driver
of Unit#2 was unable to avoid the collision and Unit#1 subsequently collided with Unit#2. Unit#2
suffered minor damage to the front passenger fender due to the collision.
Based on the above statements of unit 2, 1 determined that the driver of Unit#1 is the proximate
cause for the collision as the driver violated RCW 46.61.290 which covers right turns and stated that
"both the approach for a right turn and a right turn shall be made as close as practicable to the right-
hand curb or edge of the roadway."
Also, based on the statement made by unit 1, 1 determined that the driver of unit 1 is the proximate
cause as the driver violated RCW 46.61.295. This states that driver is not allowed to make a U-turn
unless it can be done safely and without interfering with other traffic.
I gave the driver of unit 1 a verbal warning for the above infractions.
Both Unit#1 and Unit#2 were able to drive away their vehicles without further incident. An exchange
of information was provided to all involved parties.
