NARRATIVE
On 12/24/2024 at 2210 hours, I was dispatched to an unknown injury collision at N 4th St and Park
Ave N.
Pre-Collision
Unit 1's driver stated that he was traveling Westbound on N 4th St approaching Park Ave N in the
number 2 lane.
Unit 2's driver stated that he was traveling Southbound on Park Ave N, crossing over N 4th St with a
green light in the number 2 lane.
Collision
Unit 1 stated that he was unsure if he had a red or green light when crossing into the intersection of
Park Ave N and N 4th St. Driver 1 stated that he entered into the intersection and made contact with
the rear driver's side of Unit 2, which was is a firetruck. This collision resulted in significant damage.
Notably when speaking with Driver 1, 1 smelled a strong odor of intoxicants coming from his breath.
Driver 1 agreed to do voluntary standardized field sobriety tests. Driver 1 scored 4/6 on HGN and was
unable to do the walk and turn or the 1 leg stand due to a prior foot surgery. A PBT was given
resulting in a BAC of around .03.
Unit 2's driver stated that while entering the intersection with a green light, he saw Unit 1 approaching
and saw that he was not slowing down. The driver of Unit 2 stated that he was unable to stop his
vehicle or slow to avoid a collision, as Unit 2 is a full ladder truck. Driver 2 stated that the front
bumper of Unit 1 made contact with the rear driver's side of Unit 2, specifically the rigger, causing
significant damage.
Injuries
Neither party reported any injuries.
Vehicle dispositions
Unit 1 was towed from the scene. Unit 2 was able to be driven away, however it was taken out of
service due to the damage to the rigger, which rendered the ladder truck inoperable.
Proximate Cause
If Driver 1 had not entered the intersection of Park Ave N and N 4th St against a steady red circle,
and not been driving in a negligent manner while exhibiting signs of intoxication from liquor or
cannabis, then this collision would not have happened.
Final disposition
Driver 1 was cited for Negligent Driving in the 1 st Degree (RCW 46.61.5249) and RCW 46.61.055.3A.
