NARRATIVE
On 03/19/2025 at approximately 1420 hours, I was dispatched to an unknown-if-injury vehicle
collision at the intersection Oakesdale Ave SW and S Grady Way, within the City Limits of Renton,
County of King, State of Washington.
Upon my arrival, I confirmed there were no complaints of injury requiring immediate medical response
at the time of report. There, I was able to collect each involved party's information and independent
summary of the events leading up to the collision.
The driver of Unit 1, identified as Paul J. Hildebrand, said he was stopped at the intersection facing
eastbound on SW Grady Way in the left turn lane to go north on Oakesdale Ave SW. When the traffic
signal turned green, he proceeded to make his left turn. Paul said he entered the northbound through
lanes (2 of 2) but needed to make an immediate right turn to enter the Shell gas station, 1120 SW
Grady Way. He indicated he would make a right turn and began to make his lane change. Unit 1 and
unit 2 collided in lane 1 causing moderate damage to the passenger side doors of Unit 1. Paul
believes the driver of Unit 2 undercut him and caused the collision.
The driver of Unit 2, identified as Westin Huckabee, said he was the sole occupant of his vehicle. He
was also stopped facing eastbound in the left turn lane of SW Grady Way to go north on Oakesdale
Ave SW. Unit 2 was directly behind Unit 1. When the traffic signal turned green, they proceeded
through the intersection to enter the northbound lanes of Oakesdale Ave SW. Westin said he entered
lane of 1 of 2 as Unit 2 entered lane 2 of 2. As he approached the entrance to the Shell gas station,
Unit 1 made an improper lane change to enter the property. Westin said he tried avoiding the collision
by driving onto the sidewalk, but Unit 1 and Unit 2 still collided lane 1. Unit 2 sustained moderate
damage to its front bumper.
After reviewing the information above, I believe the two drivers committed a traffic violation. The
driver of Unit 2, Westin, violated RCW 46.61.290. The driver of a vehicle intending to turn left shall
approach the turn in the extreme left-hand lane lawfully available to traffic moving in the direction of
travel of the vehicle. Westin made a left turn but did not enter the proper lane. Westin needed to
follow Unit 2 and enter lane 2 of 2 instead of lane 1 of 2.
1 also determined that the Driver of Unit 1, Paul, violated RCW 46.61.140(1) which states that a
vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practicable entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved
from such lane until the driver has first ascertained that such movement can be made with safety.
Paul made a lane change into Unit 2's lane of travel which had the right of way and was underway.
Paul did not ensure that traffic in lane 1 of 2 was clear of hazard before making the lane change.
I advised both drivers of my findings, so provided both an exchange of information to both drivers.
No citations were given. This is an informational report only.
I certify (declare) under penalty of perjury under the laws of the State of Washington that the
foregoing is true and correct.
