Specific design and construction recommendations are presented in Sections 4 and 5, s rCspe„ti. _1 3.4 FLOORS } Based on our March 13 meeting with the design team, it was concluded that a concrete slab -on - grade floor system would not be appropriate for this site given that settlement sensitive floor ` 1 coverings (such as marble) would be incorporated into the project. Consequently, a structural slab supported by grade beams is appropriate for this site. We also recommend underslab r drainage measures, such as a capillary break, be included in the design. A Positive drainage of seepage beneath the floor slab should be prodded. Seepage water should be routed away from the building into a storm drain. 3.5 SEISNHC CONSIDERATIONS Historically, the Puget Sound region has been subjected to fiegl4,.rnt earthquakes of moderate intensity. Consequently, the region is described in the Uniform Building Code (LBC) as Seismic y Zone 3. Two earthquakes that resulted in significant damage occurred in 1949 near Olympia and in 1965 near Seattle. The April 13, 1949 earthquake is the largest recorded earthquake in the region, reaching a magnitude of ? 1 on the Richter scale. It was felt over 150,000 square miles, and resulted in eight deaths and many injuries. More recently, the February 28, 2001 earthquake is the second largest recorded earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8. This earthquake was felt over a 150,000 square miles. The April 29, 1965 earthquake of magnitude 6.5 was felt over 130,000 square miles and resulted in widespread damage in the Seattle area. Ground failures attributed to liquefaction occurred in many waterfront areas, including sand boils on the Boeing property near the site. A large landslide caused by earthquake temporarily blocked the Cedar River a few miles from the site.
