Quendall Shore Profile 11-12-02 NKP INTRODUCTION In 1964, three 115,000-volt cables were laid across Lake Washington, from the Quendall area(Barbie Mill) to Mercer Island. Recently these cables were found exposed near the shore on the Quendall side of the lake. It appears the reason the cables are exposed is that the shoreline is eroding. Cable route -. . `` - ._ K . PURPOSE The purpose of this project is to install protection for the cables from damage and to prevent the public from contacting the cables. SHORELINE EROSION The existing shoreline vegetation is well established, but eroding. Root wads are breaking away and the shoreline is being undercut. To varying degrees, this erosion extends approximately 150 feet south from the north edge of Puget Sound Energy's (PSE)utility easement as shown on the attached drawing. PSE speculates that the rate of erosion has increased because the mill is not longer holding logs in the lake near the cable corridor, so the wave action is not longer being attenuated. Also, an active beaver lodge exists just north of the abandoned log dump area, and the beavers may be harvesting some of the vegetation near the shore. DEVELOPMENT PANNING CITY OF RENTON f RECEIVED Quendall Scope of Work 2/7 November 11, 2002 SCOPE OF WORK The following Scope of Work is intended to protect the cables and to reduce the rate of erosion around the cables in the easement area. PSE plans to monitor the rate of shore erosion following completion of this project. Cable Protection PSE proposes to install cast aluminum cable protectors over the cables to provide: . protection from damage. These protectors will extend 30 feet waterward from the existing water line (to a water depth of about 14 inches) and extend 10 feet landward from the existing water line (to the edge of the one-foot bank). Cable Protectors The cable protectors are made of one-half inch thick cast aluminum. Each cable protector is 22 inches long and split lengthwise into two parts. They are bolted together, and once installed, they interlock with their neighboring units.: Each unit forms a ball on one end that fits into a socket in its neighbor. The outside diameter of the assembled cable protector is approximately seven inches, with the outside diameter of the socket 11 inches. Erosion Control To reduce the rate of erosion in the upland vicinity of the cables, the displaced root wads will be relocated into the recessed shore areas above the cables and staked down. Two- inch minus river rock will be installed around the root wads and in the recessed bank areas north and south of the cables. Coir logs will be placed on the water side of the root wads to contain the rock and hold the root wads in place. • DEVCl7-,pFNT RENTONVING RECEIVED Quendall Scope of Work 3/7 November 11,2002 CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE Prior to any Site Work Call for locates at 1-800-424-555. CCM Coirlogs installed along vulnerable streams, rivers or other lake banks to protect against scour. "CCM Coirlog" consists of a coir fibre core with durable coir net or with poly net for additional strength. Normally CCM Coirlogs are produced with a diameter of 30 cm, 40cm and 50 cm (12", 16" and 20"), with a length of 3 meter or 6 meter (10 feet or 20 feet). However to get additional planting space CCM Coirlogs can also be produced in the rectangular shape in size 20cm x 30cm x 6mtr. length. The roll is secured by appropriate specified stake and with 15cm to 20cm showing above the water level. For high emabrkments areas with a variable water level, several CCM Coirlog can be applied as a stack. This natural system will protect the bank until trees and other plant roots binding take over the protection. Advantages The natural product combination will support the development of plants in distrubed wet land areas. By the eco-friendly application of natural materials, we are able toTop^ restore nature which has been violated by other forces. Applications. CCM Coirlogs are attached at the edge of the bank and secured by wooden pegs. Pegs may be used on alternate on the outer edge to firmly secure the log to the bank. We also manufacture Coirlog 7 which is bound by CCM - 700. Tests done by CBI showed that the 12" (30cm.) diameter CCM Coirlog is intended to be placed on banks where the water velocity cannot exceed 145cm/sec with waves no higher than 50cm. The gradient of the slope should not exceed 1:3:5. The use of the larger CCM coirlogs depends on the recomendations of the Project Engineer or the Corbrt:05piligliicigliANNiNG The Coirlog 7 may also provide additional structural strength.
