This section describes the method for backfilling and compacting with approved fill on the site. Any voids on the site left due to the removal of foundations, footings, ramps, etc. shall be filled to adjacent final grade for public safety purposes with the use of this fill material. Voids shall be compacted to 95% as documented in writing by the Contractor B. The work includes, but is not limited to the following: 1. Placement of fill material in the demolition voids. 2. Compaction of the fill material. 1.01 RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE A. Section 02 41 17, Demolition and Deconstruction 1.02 SUBMITTALS A. Submit copy of work plan describing the procedure for performing backfilling and compaction work per requirements of Section 011300. Identify material to be used, work practices, etc. 1.03 JOB CONDITIONS A. Appropriate noise and dust controls shall be employed to minimize impacts to surrounding properties. PART 2 – PRODUCTS 2.01 MATERIALS A. Backfill material used at voids, basements, and pits shall be Mineral Aggregate Type 17 (Pit Run Gravel), City of Seattle Standard Specification 9-03.16., or approved, free of any contaminants resulting from recycled building materials (e.g. lead paint, etc.). B. Refer to Section 01 57 00 Erosion Control for backfill material at disturbed soils and shallow depressions. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 FILL PLACEMENT REQUIREMENT A. All areas to receive fill shall be cleared of organics, topsoil, construction debris, and other deleterious materials. B. Fills shall be placed on level benches in lifts and compacted to a dry density of at least 95%. The thickness of the lifts shall be determined in the field, though generally for self-propelled compactors, the lifts shall not exceed 12 inches as measured in a loose condition (6 inches compacted thickness). C. Verification of fill compaction shall be achieved via density testing with a nuclear gauge by the Contractor. In the event of a variable soil-rubble mixture, a performance based criteria will be accepted as follows: The soil-rubble mixture shall be compacted to a firm, unyielding condition with no pumping or deflections.
