Amendment No. 5 to CAG-20-031
Rainier SWPS Final Design and Services During Bidding
May 2025
Background
The City of Renton (City) retained RH2 Engineering, Inc., (RH2) to perform an alternatives evaluation
of its Rainier and Oakesdale Stormwater Pump Stations (SWPS). The Rainier SWPS was constructed
in the 1960s. Itselectrical equipment is from the original construction and does not meet the current
electrical code with regards to the location in a Class 1, Division 2 area. To meet current electrical
code, new electrical equipment will need to be relocated to a separate electrical building or under a
shelteroutside of the classified area.In addition to electrical equipment upgrades, the City requested
RH2 evaluate alternatives for equipping the station with a permanent emergency generator.
Based on the alternatives evaluation and preliminary design prepared by RH2, the City has chosen to
locate the emergency generator for the Rainier SWPS within the Rainier Avenue right-of-way (ROW),
just south of the existing pump station. Improvements also will include upgrades to the existing
electrical system. The City recently determined that the existing pumps are aging and replacement
parts are becoming difficult to source. This Scope of Work includes evaluation of the wet well and
pump cycling, updating the design to include replacement of the pumps and associated mechanical
and electrical components, and reevaluation of the generator to determine whether the size can be
reduced with the replacement pumps and motor starters.
This Scope of Work presumes that there will be minimal impact to the rest of the design and no
substantial redesign will need to occur for the pumps to be replaced as part of the project.
Task 8A 90-Percent Plans, Specifications, and OPCC for Pump Replacement
Objective: Update the design to include replacement of the existing pumps. Prepare 90-percent
design plans, general and technical specifications, and opinion of probable construction costs (OPCC)
for the pump replacement. Perform internal quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) review
and submit 90-percent design documents to the City for review.
Approach:
Select replacement pumps to replace the aging pumps within the existing wet well. Advance
the pump replacement design plans to 90 percent. Attend one (1) site visit to confirm piping
and the planned replacement.
