Assignment:
Level II Basic Tree Risk Assessment for tree adjacent to retaining wall construction.
Tree (please reference attached photos and site maps):
Bigleaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum) = 16” diameter at standard height. The tree is a volunteer
that is growing between the property and the neighbor to the north. The maple leans over the
residence with the canopy concentrated toward the top of the tree. The lower limbs have been
removed presumably for clearance of the residences.
Discussion:
As an unavoidable consequence of a permitted retaining wall installation, excavation has been
carried out near the trunk of the tree. Roots have been cut up to one foot from the trunk.
Based on the lean, the weight of the canopy, and the newly disturbed roots I have deemed the
tree as high risk. The maple is probable to fail with a severe consequence of the failure as the
home is in the target in the strike zone.
Recommendation:
Remove the tree as soon as practical. Work priority is high. Removal should be done by a
qualified professional and is considered a tight quarter situation. Replacement tree installation
as city requires.
