Laszlo Csuha - RE 10" water meter relocation for Boeing Page 1 = From: "Karalus, Greg" <greg.karalus@Boeing.com> To: "'Laszlo Csuha"' <LCsuha@ci.renton.wa.us> Date: 9/20/01 3:06PM Subject: RE: 10" water meter relocation for Boeing Laszlo, I have a couple of concerns regarding the work that was done by Archer: 1. Behind the Sub shop, dirt and bark was installed over one of the entrance manways to the vault where our valves are. This dirt and bark should be cleared off of the vault entrance. 2. Behind the Sub shop, several of the ground gates need to be adjusted to conform to the right height of the surrounding ground. One of the ground gates was covered up with grass and cannot be seen (located near the sidewalk on our east main). 3. The valve handles were left on the valves in the new meter vaults. I am concerned with security of these valves. Anyone could drop into the vaults and close the valves thus leaving us without water. G. A. This will allow enough clearance for the two courses of brick and mortar plus the ring and cover casting height. 2. On sheet C-2 and C-3 Hub and Flange adapter has been added between union points and 14"x10" reducer as SPU requested in their last comments. I also have the following comments: The existing 14-inch diameter ductile iron pipes have a tight -bonded exterior coating consisting of Madison Chemical TX-15. The nominal thickness was specified to be 25 mils dry film thickness (I need to verify the thickness with Dave Dormier at HGI). A tight - bonded, dielectric coating is recommended for all new ductile iron pipe and fittings used for construction of the new meter vaults. A 100-percent solids polyurethane coating can be used (similar to the Madison Chemical product used on the existing 14-inch pipe). A second product that would be suitable for this application is a heat fused polyethylene coating. The City of Seattle has successfully used this product on ductile iron pipe and fittings. The polyethylene coating would be a good application for this project and could be used for all pipe and fittings in both buried and vault exposure conditions. The nominal thickness of the heat fused polyethylene coating should be 30 mils. The City of Seattle has developed a specification for this product would be suitable for this project. The City of Renton may wish to contact SPU to obtain a copy of the specification (contact Jeff Pimentell, 206/684-5913). The material is applied locally by SPC, Inc., Woodinville, Washington (telephone 206/628- 2737). 2. It will not be necessary to wax tape joints of ductile iron pipe and fittings if 100-percent solids polyurethane or heat fused polyethylene is used. Wax tape will only be necessary for joints where the coating is held back if it would interfere with gasket sealing (such as tape coatings). 3. All buried metals must be coated. Uncoated buried metals will adversely impact the galvanic anode cathodic protection system. All shackle rods, valve bodies, valve boxes, and other buried metals must be coated with a tight -bonded coating. The valve body can be coated with epoxy or 100-percent solids polyurethane (surface must be abrasive blasted prior to application of the coating). The valve box can be coated in the field with wax tape. 4. If cathodic protection test stations are installed on both sides of the meter vault, it will not be necessary to install joint bond wires on pipe and fittings located inside the vault. Electrical continuity of the piping inside the vault would not be necessary for cathodic protection purposes. 5. The valve box lid must not be allowed to touch any reinforcing metal in the sidewalk. City of Renton or SPU standard details for flush mounted cathodic protection test stations would be acceptable.
