Upon my arrival, I observed (Unit 2) a 2008 Green Lexus RX350 (397XFZ/WA) with damage to the driver's side rear door and a flat rear passenger-side tire, and driver's side airbags deployed. The Lexus was driven by Nikhil Balakrishna Thanedar (DOB 04/10/1968). Unit 1 was a gray Tesla Model Y (CPV3516/WA) VIN/7SAYGDEDXSA345462 driven by the registered owner Abdullahi Nurdin Abdulle (DOB 01/01/1984). Unit 1 had damage to the front bumper and hood. (no air bag deployment) Both parties were identified by their WADL photos. I confirmed there were no injuries. The driver of Unit#1 stated that he was the sole occupant of his vehicle and that before the collision, he was traveling northbound in about the 300 block of Sunset Blvd N. Unit 1 entered the turn lane to make a left turn into the parking lot located at 353 Sunset Blvd N. Unit 1 viewed that traffic had stopped in the lane 3 of 3, with a semi-truck blocking the view of the other 2 lanes. As Unit 1 attempted to turn, Unit 2 had approached, and Unit 1 struck Unit 2 in the rear driver's side door, causing Unit 2 to spin 360 degrees. The driver of Unit#2 said he was the sole occupant of his vehicle and was traveling southbound on Sunset Blvd N in lane 2. Unit 2 observed heavy traffic in lane 3 and no traffic in lane 1. Unit 2 had changed lanes and was struck by Unit 1 as Unit 1 had pulled into his lane. Unit 2 stated he was not able to see Unit 1 in front of the semi-truck. Based on the above statements, I determined that the Driver of Unit#1 (Abdulle) is the proximate cause for the collision due to not granting the right of way during a left turn, causing a collision. The driver of Unit#1 violated RCW 46.61.185(1) by being the driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left within an intersection and not yielding the right-of-way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction which is within the intersection or so close thereto as to constitute an immediate hazard. The driver of Unit#1 (Abdulle) did not grant the right of way to Unit#2, traveling in the roadway, which had the right of way and was already underway. Due to Unit#1 having to traverse across oncoming traffic, the driver of Unit#1 must wait until the intersection is clear of hazards prior to proceeding. Unit 2 had to be towed due to extensive damage. An exchange of information was provided to all involved parties. I took pictures of the damage to both vehicles and uploaded them to Axon. This incident was captured on my body-worn camera. This report is a summary of the events that occurred and is not an exact sequencing of events. Statements have been paraphrased and summarized.
